He can't run between the tackles.

...except for that 76 yard thing, but outside of that his average wasn't very good :Eyes_Emoji_42x42:

Actually not only was the TD run between the tackles, but I’m hard pressed to remember any of his runs Sunday being outside the tackles. I’m sure there were probably a few but he was up the gut all day long against Arizona.

FWIW as a newcomer I will also admit to not having been against the McCaffrey pick but not being crazy about it at the time and iffy on him his rookie year. He seemed inclined to dance too much.

My personal philosophy (for all you NFL owners out there closely monitoring the Huddle for your next GM) leans away from drafting rb’s in the 1st round unless it’s a perrenial pro bowler not only because of career shortness but how easy it is to find a guy who can get you 4 YPC behind a decent line. I’m still not sold that Ezekiel Elliot is more than marginally above average because I think Betty White could get you 4 per behind Dallas’s oline.

For that reason alone I wanted the Panthers to draft a different position at the time but now that CMC is proving himself to be a special player, i’ll just sit here happily munching this crow.

This has always been the thinking, but it's changing.

IMO if you think that you are getting the very best, or close to the very best player at his position in the NFL, draft number needs to be thrown in the trash, unless you are talking about LS, P, or K.

I had no issue with CMC being selected at 8, even though I used to be very against that type of thinking, same with Big Q at G.  In fact I was all over this board trying to sell others on the CMC selection.

My main reason?  Do you think that there was a player in that draft, at no. 8 that could have helped us in that 2015 SB any more than CMC?  I couldn't come up with one, and it was right.  With CMC or something even close to him, we win that game....IMO.

I am pretty much with you. As someone who doesn’t follow the college game super closely, I was aware he had broken Barry Sanders records and impressed with that as no mean feat, but was focusing more on perceived needs at other positions at the time.

Now I couldn’t tell you exactly what I was thinking at the time but I did at least have the good sense when Jerry called me up to ask what I thought they should do with the pick to tell him I thought he should listen to the guys who do it for a living instead of me.

It would have been super embarrassing to be fired as Panthers Gm when I didn’t even have the job. Bullet dodged.

    • And, honestly, there's only so much you can attempt to do in the draft. And every draft pick is a roll of the dice. But that's where grabbing a ton of UDFAs, and targeting the best, makes a big difference. Sure, their individual chances of getting a hit here is less, but that shotgun pattern might just hit something.  Right now, we need bulk, partly to rebuild and partly to dilute the deep level of stank that has developed on this team in the last six years. If we're going to rebuild a culture built around culture, accountability and winning, then these UDFAs we bring in each season have to be the wash water that gets out that leftover dirt.  Canales seems to be a smart, culture-first, build up the good ones kind of guy. I like that and I hope he can keep it going here. But he was working against a locker room that had been taught to lose and taught to distrust or ignore coaches. He's got his work cut out for him, still. He does seem to have it moving in the right direction and that's something I was pretty amazed with by the end of last season.
    • The most telling sign, IMO, of a team on the upward swing is who we lost in the off-season. Who left that even saw the field? Woods, Clowney, Sanders, & Hekker. OK...no big deal. Clowney is the only 1 that I raised an eyebrow over and I get that it was a money decision. No need to pay him over $7M to take snaps from our draft picks when he was just OK last year.
