RR doing a good job with the D

Rivera is and has always been a great defensive mind.  One of the more underrated ones in the last 15 years IMO.

Rivera actually is the defensive guru the national media wants you to believe guys like Dan Quinn, Rex Ryan, Gregg Williams, and the other loud mouths are without the results.

Defensive guys are not as en vogue as they were 10+ years ago, but they are still important.  More of the Patriots Super Bowl wins (2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, & 2018) have been about the defense than anything, and that points back to Belichick.  The Patriots had the massively 28-3 comeback against the Clowns due to Brady and the offense, but they also lost in 2007, 2011, & 2017 in spite of having the superior offensive team on paper.

Also, 2 of the best younger defensive guys right now in the league are Sean McDermott and Steve Wilks.  Directly from Rivera.

Rivera gets bashed for a lot, and a good bit of it is fair, but the man knows defense and how to coach it.

Rivera went a long time without a HC job b/c of his laid-back demeanor, but his defenses have produced from Chicago to San Diego to here.

Sure, but there is this--of the (approx) 25 defensive players on the active roster:

First round picks (8): Luke, Shaq, Vernon, McCoy, Irvin, Reid, Burns, Poe

On defense, a third of the roster is comprised on first round draft choices.

I am not saying that RR is not doing a good job, but damn--our defense is an all-star team.  Throw in the second rounders, and you get 11 players that were first or second round selections.

Second rounders (3):  Jackson, KK Short, Bradberry

Meanwhile, on offense, we have (currently):

First rounders (3):   Olsen, Moore, CMC (Cam not playing at moment)

Second rounders (3):  Samuel, Moton, Little

The offensive line:  We have 2 undrafted starters on the OL; our current QB was undrafted.

The offense is currently starting as many undrafted players as it is first rounders.

If you gave a coordinator a MLB like Luke calling the shots and 11 elite draft picks---then you should be good.

Draft round doesn't really mean anything dude.

Patriots have even fewer 1st/2nd round picks on their starting offense:

Phillip Dorset (1st) Sony Michel (1st) aaaaaaaaaand that's it.

Rest are 3rd round/later or undrafted. They're still doing fine.

I'm not a fan of this argument. Good players play good regardless of where they're drafted. It's up to the GM/team to find them.

Ha wtf? This is reasoning? We have constantly been top 10 defense under Rivera.

Yes draft round doesnt matter but the thing is Rivera is known for being such a Defensive guru he should have been able to do more with less in the past, the defense has only been really good when its stacked like this,  youth has helped too.

Ron has only fielded a top 10 defense (front 7/secondary) like once. His Front 7 has just about always been in the top rankings since 2013 though, I’ll give you that.

    • You bring up a good point on the stability part and i would agree that probably will factor into it. But yes, Tepper does have a strong influence on who stays/goes but I still believe ultimately it'is Morgan, Tilis and Canales who will decide.
    • I can always count on yout to put things so delicately lol. I'm still not sold on the fact that Tepper will make them keep him if they don't see him as a long term answer.
    • holy poo... this thread inspired me to keep trying to guess passwords to various alts I've created over the years and I finally got in! I pretty much accepted my fate as a lurker for the last several months because I could not remember my password. I didn't realize that new users couldn't join either, that explains things. I have been around for years under several different monikers, through the good and bad. I too always find myself coming back here even with all of the new social media options for Panther fan engagement. It's simply nostalgic.   I do get extremely annoyed with the same 5-10 posters shitting on Bryce and complaining about everything. It's unfortunate that half of them are mods and that nobody new can join because now I pretty much just come on here and see Bryce / Panther slander. There is barely any positivity to be had. We all watch this team and hang on this forum for entertainment purposes only. We have no control or say in anything. I used to be such a crazy ass fan that would argue with strangers about Cam newton on the internet and at games. Now, as a father of 3, a business owner and someone with way gnarlier life problems - I like to watch football and talk about football as an escape. Not to bitch more. I really like the direction of the team and will root anyone in a Panthers jersey. I live down the street from the Rams practice facility, Matthew Stafford is currently coaching his daughters flag football team in the same program I coach my sons. I have two highly ranked Rams staff members sons on my team. The way we beat them and had them on the ropes in the playoffs has me feeling amazing, and you would think we have the next great thing in Bryce with the way they all speak of him. I'm gonna ride that high and be a delusional fan, I hope that huddle can stick around or get fixed and perhaps I will get back to posting more now that I can log in again. I will do my best to not get banned. Keep Pounding!
