Panthers used Gerald McCoy’s knowledge of Jameis Winston against him

The Carolina Panthers sacked Jameis Winston seven times on Sunday, and they forced him into throwing four interceptions. Former Tampa Bay defensive lineman Gerald McCoy had a major role in that.

Apart from the 2.5 sacks from McCoy himself (he’d had none through five prior games), McCoy told PFT via phone from London after the 37-26 win that he knows plenty about how Winston plays, and that he spread that information to the rest of the defensive line.

So what’s one specific thing that McCoy used against Winston?

“He likes to step up in the pocket,” McCoy said, adding that the Panthers defensive line deliberately pushed the middle of the pocket to disrupt Winston. It worked.

The defensive line has been a huge part of the turnaround in Carolina. After losing two home games only four days apart to start the season, the Panthers have won four in a row. With quarterback Cam Newton out for each of those wins, what has the defense done differently in his absence?

Not a thing, McCoy said.

“It doesn’t matter who’s at quarterback,” McCoy said. “We do the same thing every day. It’s not what we hope to do, it’s what we expect to do.”

McCoy said that defensive coordinator Eric Washington and defensive line coach Sam Mills III have a simple message for the defensive linemen, each and every week: “We are the game plan.”

Coach Ron Rivera had a different message for the team after those two losses to start the season.

“I refuse to let you believe you’re not a good team,” Rivera told the Panthers, according to McCoy. McCoy said that the players took that to heart. Aware that people outside the locker room were writing them off, they believed in each other and came together.

It culminated in four straight wins, capped by Sunday’s victory over the Bucs in London. McCoy said he had wanted to play the game in Tampa, but that Rivera had a different message for the Panthers at the beginning of the week regarding the inconvenience and annoyance of traveling to London instead of Tampa.

“We’re playing a game this week,” Rivera wrote on the board, “and we’re playing that game in a football stadium.”

That’s the attitude the Panthers have brought to each of the four different stadiums where they have won games in the past four weekends, whether it Arizona, Houston, Charlotte, or London.

After the bye, the Panthers go for five wins in five cities with a trip to San Francisco.

Took a lead. Teams play different when they're behind.

Yup. Panthers record when leading at halftime is excellent.

IIRC Panthers have led wire to wire last 3 games. Huge.

Don't have stats handy, but those early points matter, especially since we've lost all 6 coin tosses, so opponents started the 2nd half with the ball 4 of 6 games. ( Tampa elected to receive both games)

    • lol well that kinda ended up working out in the end, even though I still don't have my jersey yet. Was supposed to ship by tomorrow this time, but just got another email saying it was delayed another 3 weeks and because it's been delayed so long, I had to tell them to keep the order or cancel it, but gave me a 25% off my next order as an apology. Well, my original fear came true and they are now selling the FUSE version (but still not the Blue unfortunately) before the one I ordered was ever shipped. But that's awesome, because I was able to use that coupon to order the FUSE instead and then cancelled the original order.  So I got the jersey I wanted for only $6.30 more than the crappier version costs, and it also says it will be shipped immediately and get here early next week, or 2 weeks before the other was now supposed to be shipped out.
    • I've watched this and think we are well underway.  Believe it or not, Bryce is a big part of this.  The way he bounced back with such grace.  And we've got a lot of young players who want to make their mark, Dave is giving them an opportunity.  I loved our draft.  I like the number of guys we brought in, and they will help build the culture we want under Dave.  We're getting closer, and I think we'll see more wins this year than most of the board. The right culture breeds winning, and winning builds the right culture.  Imho, it's coming.
    • As others have said it's both. One creates the other. But it also takes time sometimes years. And there have been teams lately with new car smell coaching staffs that looked like they were putting it together quickly but things came crashing back down to Earth. Sustainability is the key. For that to happen the meddling of our owners has to stop and they cannot be tempted to return to their ways over any bump in the road either.
