Opinions: our QB situation 2020

If Cam comes back 100% and can play at a high level, what do we do with Allen next year. Rely on Grier as a unproven back up and hope he develops or try and retain Allen as our backup. Next year is Cam's last year under contract. What u think is the smart move?

Honestly based on what we’ve seen from Cam lately, I say we roll with Allen the rest of this year unless he really shits the bed badly, and if he looks great and getting better then we roll with him and trade Cam.

Main reason for this is simply value for what they’ll cost. Cam is relatively cheap next year too but after that if he still looks good he’ll be up in the $30M range. If Allen continues to look legit, then we have him for the next 2 years under $1M then RFA and could then tag him too. That value is too damn good to pass up, and we could get some more draft capital for Cam.

With every win I am feeling more comfortable with life after Cam.  Cam is going to command a lot of money and it will be hard to give an extension to someone who may not last the entirety of the contract.

Hold on to Allen as long as possible and than trade him at the absolutely last moment in the described scenario

the smartest plan if cam comes back 100% finish this season and next season strong, while primarily being a pocket passer or showing he will age gracefully at the position, do you only consider trading Allen

Do we have Allen that cheap?  He was not drafted.  I thought he was a free agent next year---not sure

He’s an ERFA the next two years which means he has to accept the ERFA tender or not play, and it was like $600K this year. Then after those two years he’s a RFA so a first round tender is roughly $4.5M and if no offer sheet is signed we have him for that amount (or match the offer sheet). Then we could tag him and if he’s playing at a high level that would be a bargain.

Thanks.  I forgot all about (and never fully understood) the ERFA stuff.  We have a nice problem.

Too far in the future to speculate. Cam could come back and make another MVP run and we win the Super Bowl over the Pats and then retire,..

or not,

or he sucks

or or or.

Will Grier starts after Cam and Allen both go down,.. then he really really sucks

and we get stuck with no quarterback with the 18th pick again,..

    • Here is what it said about him coming out of college: Overview A three-year starter with good feet and technique, Samac could be in consideration for a move-blocking rushing attack. He is strong at the point of attack but will have limitations against NFL power. He operates with good hand placement and nimble feet and is a demon once he’s on the move as a pulling center leading the way. He’s fluid and agile in the run game, but those traits fail to do as much for him in protection. Samac punches with inside hands but can struggle to widen his protection base in order to protect his edges. He has eventual starting talent as a run blocker but needs to add more mass and improve in pass protection to get there.
    • Through 2 games cltfc has 12 shot attempts. Opponents 23 shots on target. Attack sucks, Defense definitely sucks. Kahlina is the only reason they haven't given up 14 goals in two games.
    • I met a few times--never liked him. I figured he might have had a bad day--but then realized that he must have a lot of bad days. Once he raised his voice at my son because my son did not understand a question when SS was signing his jersey.  I wanted the jersey to represent his encounter with a Panther great, not some small man with a bad attitude.  I told me son, "Forget it.  He was asking you what your name is (My son was about 7 and told me that he thought Smitty was going to write (my son's) name on the jersey.  He said "Dad, I thought he was supposed to write HIS name on the jersey, not mine."  I said, "He was personalizing it, writing it to you--like a birthday card."  He is now grown, and he has a steve smith Jersey that is framed and matted.  He keeps it is his closet.  I asked him, "Why not have that out on your wall?"  He said, "All I remember is an A-hole scribbled on my shirt.  I don't remember a legend or hero.  But he had a Jake Delhomme Jersey on his wall.  "Jake was great.  I will always remember that."  (Jake stayed and talked to us for about 5 minutes or more--GREAT guy.)
