Ron may have had a reason for going "Riverboat" again

I guess after having a boss that looked like a Madame Tousseau  wax sculpture after the fire to having a boss that could literally afford to have you killed and hire enough attorneys that he ends up winning a settlement, would make you push a little harder in your performance.

I hope the report is true, and I hope he sends Ron a stack of moving boxes as a reminder to stop sucking.

Pretty sure there were some examples of Tepper being a tad annoyed during "All or Nothing".

We still have an open roster spot that we seem to be in no hurry to fill.

I can't remember if it was Person or Rodrigue, but one of them said the Panthers are just "waiting for the right fit" or until they have a need.

We have a need. Give me a 280+ DE. We desperately need a rotational run stopping DE.

Tepper will not hesitate to pull the trigger if Ron doesn’t produce something right now, and no I don’t think 9-7 is good enough.

Tepper does have a reputation (that I have little doubt is deserved) for being a demanding boss.

Gotta figure that loss to the Steelers last year pissed him off pretty badly too.

Tepper had every reason to be angry---coming off a bye, no adjustments, just standing there with his arms folded with that "I have no clue" look on his face....made me mad.

Basically, Ron counts on some stud to carry him.  They shut down Cam, Ron lost the game.  Shut down CMC, Ron loses.

We have great players no doubt but saying players are carrying Rivera is stupid. Luke didn't have a clue when we played SF probably the smartest person in that stadium. This is a team game the whole team played like poo we and needed it

From what I've read, the "Riverboat" call for the fake punt didn't come from the sidelines. It was an audible by Collin Jones himself.

I'm sure seeing Tepper livid was not a great feeling for Ron. I'd just caution connecting it to the fourth down call.

But the coach allows the player to make a decision like that?  If that is the case, no wonder RR blames the players and not himself. The call should have come from the "eyes in the sky" that noticed a tendency.  Then they relay that to the coach, who chats with the player, telling him, "When you see this, do it...."  But to allow the player to decide on his own, when he has no role in game management, then it is a coach's decision because he facilitated the process.

Again, I understand this  if was like the Sean Payton Super Bowl onside kick, but the Saints saw something the Colts were doing and discussed it over the extra long half.  Payton knew it and went for it.    Different animal.  It was planned, calculated, and executed based on risks assumed by the game managers.

Were it not for his extra effort, that little surge at the end of the play---opinions on this board would be different.  People are only supporting this because it worked this time, but the process behind it should scare you----it reveals a system that is not sound.

Before you call someone stupid, whoever you are, answer this---

Would Rivera still have a job were it not for Cam?   (No--he nearly lost his job a few times with Cam)/.Did he allow his QB to play hurt? (Yes--he substituted Cam to throw hail mary passes last year--he knew, but RR's job was on the line with the new owner and he had no options).  Did he allow his QB to run and be hit more than any other QBs in the NFL?  (BY FAR)  https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/stats-show-cam-newton-has-been-hit-more-than-any-nfl-qb-by-far/

Does CMC play over 90% of all plays?  Does he touch the ball 55% of the time in a league that throws the ball more than it runs it?  (In 2018, the Panthers ran the ball 42% of the time.  We have Moore, Samuel, and a hall of fame TE, yet of the remaining 58%--the passes--CMC gets about 20% of the passes thrown to him.   CMC's touches lead the NFL.)  How long do you think CMC's career can withstand this kind of load?  The announcers were repeating Ron's excuses for his use of CMC ("He never takes a direct hit..." for example)--that is his way of defending his overuse of CMC.   So what numbers do you have, smart person, that dispute my points without something as intellectually significant as "that's stupid?" https://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/nfl/carolina-panthers/article235853372.html

Nope, they installed it this week and Rivera gave them the green light according to an article on Panthers.com

@JourdanRodrigue: Colin Jones said he has the autonomy to check into that fake punt if he sees the right look. He went to shake Rivera’s hand after he converted - he reminds Rivera all the time that he had 400 rushing yards and 7 TDs in a game in HS. “See? I told you I wouldn’t let you down.”

Putting it together with the Panthers.com information, the most likely conclusion is they installed it this week and gave Colin the green light to check to it in the game. As for the specific decision to go for it in that particular fourth diwn, Colin decided to check to it and Rivera was just as surprised as we were when it actually happened.

Setting aside the debate over the fake punt for a moment, that wasn't Rivera's only "Riverboat" moment yesterday. It wasn't even his first one.

We went for the touchdown early on rather than settling for a field goal. You could argue given where we were in the game that was the bigger gamble.

Bottom Line: Person pointed out that the first time we Rivera went Riverboat, it was because his job was on the line.

This time it may well have been because his boss ripped him a new one.

I've been a day one fan and I'm glad to say the Panthers historically are turning into a good/great organization. We drafted Matt Moore, so proud he's still balling. You guys whine and bitch now but one day you're going to look back and see them for what they are, one of the better run organizations in the NFL and it seems that it will continue and be magnified by Tepper. These are great days folks. The golden age of the Carolina Panthers. We have BOTH Cam and Kyle this and next year. Enjoy.
