I suppose you could technically say we did that this season, but imagine if we had done it in prior years?

Is it possible we wouldn't be where we are now?

We didn’t do it this season, if we did, Cam wouldn’t have played the first 2 games.

Also, if Cam would have said he was ready after the TB game I doubt RR would have sat him.

We did it after Newton got hurt, although I'm not really sure how much choice there was at that point. Rivera was repeatedly referencing "100%" every time the subject was brought up.

And as mentioned, he did it with McCaffrey (granted, not a quarterback) at the end of the Titans game.

People have pointed out that Rivera had no trouble sitting Kuechly in the past. And at the end of the Titans game he told McCaffrey to sit down.

(no, it's not because of that)

Yet Newton was trotted out on more than one occasion when he probably shouldn't have been.

Has Luke ever sat when he was actually cleared to play? Maybe a game or two at the end of 2016 when we were already eliminated from the playoffs?

people can point to how Cam "hid" his injury from the team, but come on. he sure as hell didn't hide it from the Huddle, everyone here knew he was hurt bad for those games. so even if he was saying "I'm good coach" it really should have been a more proactive situation with Ron.

I agree that Cam should have been protected from himself, and it's easy to say in hindsight the team should have sat him. But Cam admitted he concealed the condition of his foot injury to the medical and coaching staff so he could play. That's a tough injury to gauge without feedback from the person experiencing the injury. So I think that might be one of the biggest reasons the team moves on from him, if Cam can't be honest with the team or himself.

Really wished we'd gone after Reich when he was available. He was my top choice at the time, and he could have done so much with this team.

He and Gettleman would have been acquainted from their days in Buffalo. Gettleman also had an acquaintance with Kyle Shanahan through his dad.

I'll always wonder what would have happened if he would have been given the chance to choose his own head coach.

Hard to conceal your injury when there are 4 quarters of evidence that something is wrong. I assume coaches still practice and watch tape? Nothing looked right with Cam last half of last season or the first two games of this season. Was that right of Cam? Hell no. Was it noticable to fans with little football skills in comparison to NFL employees? Yes it was.

That's one of the things that gets me.

Everybody here plus numerous media people could tell that Newton was hurt, and none of us are professional football coaches who see him every day.

Rivera going with "well he told me he was fine" makes him sound like an absolute dunce.

he hired Shurmur in NY, right? or did that call come from above, i wonder. i don't know much about Shurmur but that's an incredibly un-flashy pick, we would probably have ended up with a Mike Zimmer or something to disappoint us
