I know it's depressing, but lets talk about draft eligible QBs

I have been doing lots of evaluating of the upcoming draft, and per the usual I tend to specialize in QBs, I also use a NFL scout as a resource for my own work. We do tend to disagree on some of these, but the general consensus is that if Tua comes out, 4-5 QBs will go in the first round of this years draft. With Cam possibly having a 11 month recovery time, it very well may be time to find a suitable replacement.

My rankings:
1. Justin Herbert
2. Tua Tagovailoa
3. Joe Burrow
4. Jacob Eason

Are the only ones I foreseeing going in the first round, with the off chance of Jalen Hurts or Jordan Love going as well. Of the ones listed, assuming we stay on the trail of a poor season (lets say two more wins leaving us at 7-9 and picking in the early to mid teens) I would assume either Tua or Eason would be the only ones potentially available at our picking spot, again assuming we don't reach for a guy like Love or Hurts. This leads to another interesting discussion when we ask "who would fit our offense" because we currently have no idea what that offense is going to look like. I would assume if we were to draft a QB in the first, which seems like a strong possibility, we would build that offense around him and CmC. Our current iteration of our offense would most fit Jalen Hurts (for obvious reasons) or Joe Burrow with Norv's system of quick reads and getting the ball out fast.

Of course this is all based on who we bring in as our next coach and GM, but which QB would you like to see take the mantle of our next franchise QB? I don't think we find one in the later rounds, and if we were to reinvest in the QB, it would have to be in round 1.

Cam having an 11 month recovery time from the actual injury or just in the general sense??

Also, Tua would be off my board at this point. We don't even know that he is going to be capable of playing football again yet.

I heard it's post surgery, which he hasn't even had yet.

The interwebz tells me there are a lot of variables that go with the surgery, so it's hard to say. I haven't seen anything concrete yet, so I would probably say that 11 months is pure speculation.

We have no idea what part Cam will play in the future. I think two things will have a huge impact on that; his overall health and what we decide to do with the coaching staff/front office.

since o-lines seem to be getting harder and harder to come by i think we need someone mobile. tua or jalen, then burrow or herbert.  if tua falls to us i think we'll be set for a long time.  i like jalen too because he's thick.   the days of having a qb for 12-15 years may be ending for the most part because the o-line situation may not be fixable.  according to the ex players i heard yesterday they don't get to practice enough to hone their techniques.    i have no idea about eason or love so i can't comment on either.

I think Jalen is currently "projected" to be a Day Two guy. Not sure he is going to have the NFL hype some of those other guys are. But, there is a lot of time, work outs, evaluations, etc between now and the draft.

How can we justify drafting Qb now when we got Grier last year?

Because Grier was a 3rd round pick and was probably over drafted even at that spot, on top of the fact that the regime that drafted him is all but assured to be gone.

To me we either have to trade an asset and trade up to be in position to take Burrow or Herbert in 2020.. I thought Tua was the best QB in the draft due to his track record and overall ability but his injury is a major concern. I rather us roll with Cam or Kyle in 2020 and if they dont pan out we are in position to take Lawerence or Fields in 2021. I don't want to take a QB in 2020 just for the hell of it and reach because the top two prospects are gone.

I may be crazy, but I would take a chance on Tua. Yes, it's a risk, but if he recovers the way the doctors believe he will, that's a lot of talent you picked up in the middle of the draft.

Verge, how do evaluate Hurts in comparison to say, Lamar Jackson?

    • Rico walking is no big deal. I'll take a healthy 2024 Hubbard over Rico any time and losing Mays is, again, no a big deal.  Young is signed for what, $35M for the next two years? Say he wants $50M but the FO doesn't. If they put the franchise tag on him, that would be around $55? So basically they are getting Young for the next 3 years for an average of $30M per year. Putting the franchise tag on him wouldn't be my first choice but it gives them an option that wouldn't be locking him into a long term, $50M contract. I'm not suggestion they do that. Just that the option will be there should they get to that point. Hunt is on a 5 year deal which is done in 28 so he either restructures or is gone anyway. Moton will be 35 by then and will either be gone or have diminished playing time. Neither of those players has anything to do with getting Young a contract. The O line is way overpaid anyway. Hopefully by the time they are gone, Freeling and Hecht will be developed and Ickey will be healthy. Young was benched his second year and only got his job back because Dalton was injured. Not sure how you can call that entitled. And I would NOT say putting a rookie QB on a team with no receivers, tight ends or O lineman and then being put with a coach who never wanted you and is fired mid season, is a definition of luck. As far as competition, no team is going to bring in competition for a QB picked first overall - especially given the capital that was given up to get him.
    • With apologies to Lady Cowboy fan, any day we can screw over the Cowboys is a GOOD day…
    • Been here since 2014ish. Good times. Its a shame Zod wont sell, it wouldnt take that much effort to get this place back into shape.
