Yeah, but coming form the 49ers he was going to bring the WCO to Carolina and open up our offense which, to that point, had been horrible.

He originally brought Bill Musgrave as his OC and then for some weird reason Musgrave quit and the job went to Gil Haskell instead.

If I recall correctly though, Haskell only lasted a year before taking a job with Mike Holmgren in Seattle.

It was more than that, everybody hated Seifert for his attitude and his approach. He chose to cut Beuerlein for Weinke. That offensive coach you speak of got us to 31st in offense and probably like 60th in defense, it was so bad. Offensive coaches can be great but when defense wins championships, airing it out in 50-47 losses doesn’t do much for me.

A loss is a loss, but at least 50-47 is a much more entertaining game than say 28-3. If you can't consistently put up 21 points a game, you have litlle shot of winning unless you have a top 5 defense and we haven't had one of those as of late. I'm over 3-yards and cloud of dust; let the defense  win the game coaching mentality.

Look, I'm not trying to say anything wonderful about Seifert, just pointing out he was to the closest thing to an offensive focused head coach in team history.  You are correct, he was a DC for the 49ers before becoming the HC, but to my point he was brought in to fix our inept offense.

So to your point based on Seifert's historical background as a coordinator, we've never had a pure offensive mind as a HC in team history.  Twenty-five years of leaning on the defense has not gotten more than mediocrity.

Didn't say you were. Just remembering how it happened. It was all kind of strange back then and word filtered out afterward that Seifert was a colossal a--hole.

Tepper is said to want an offensive coach.

if i'm remembering correctly, and i hate to remind you of this, he let go of beurlein for jeff lewis.   that jeff lewis.  i was at the preseason game where he made his glorious debut.

Ah yes, Jeff Lewis was Seifert's prospective boy-wonder and that blew up in his face which lead to us drafting Weinke.  We've had so many colossal failures, it's hard to keep up with them all.  Sad....

Edit:  But wasn't it Musgrave that brought Lewis in with him and was touting him as the best thing since sliced bread and then (as Mr. Scot said) Musgrave suddenly quit? It almost seems like a set up job in hind sight!   I guess Seifert did have a lot of enemies...
