The coach that never punts

Since the "Analytics" catch phrase has been thrown around so much lately, I remembered a video I watched several years ago. It's about a high school coach who took over a small program and made it competitive by going against many traditional approaches to football. 

I want to preface, that I don't see Tepper going remotely to this kind of extreme. However, I think with all I have seen from him in the past year and a half, I wouldn't be surprised if the next hire is not in the typical mold of current NFL coaches.

I am not advocating this, just stating he seems open to this kind of mindset

I saw that last week as well. The issue is onside kicks have a much higher recovery rate in high school than the pros. That’s why it’s working for him. I think it’s like 20% in HS and 3% in the NFL. 
 

If a team really practiced hard and perfected it, it could work well for a while until the rest of the league caught up and got better.

I’m all for taking advantage of aspects of the game that other teams ignore though.

Yeah, I was about to say that I'd be curious to see if his approach would translate at a higher level of competition. I'd love to see a college give him a shot.

It's interesting for sure, but lower skill levels generally mean that radical things can be more effective.

As Chip Kelly found out about professional refs controlling game tempo unlike college, this guy will find out that pro formations and rules will cause serious retooling of his “analytics”

I don't know that I would call what Chip Kelly did analytics. He found a system that worked in College and tried to take it to the pro level without taking any consideration into the difference in the game. He then stuck with it intractably till the bitter end, pissing off everyone involved in the process. If anything, what he did went to the other extreme. He was unwilling to modify his game.

To be clear, I'm not saying he should hire this guy. I'm not saying that these tactics would work in the NFL. What I am saying is that I think Tepper might look for someone who isn't in the typical mold. Someone who is willing to change based on what the data states will or will not work.

Y’all got pissy when Rivera made the analytically correct move of going for 2 down 14, I don’t think you could handle a coach going for it on 4th and 17 from their own 5.

football isn’t math and high school football isn’t the pros.

Not to mention he did all this while also blowing up his roster and getting rid of a lot of his talent.

I expect the Panthers to go for it on 4th down more than any team in NFL history in the coming years, and people will lose their mind when we fail going for it on our own 30 yard line.

It won't be as extreme as this highschool coach, but it will still shock people.

Tepper will only hire someone who sticks to the math.
