With changes coming in Carolina, Panthers owner David Tepper could consider tapping into his past and trying to pry loose some personnel people from Pittsburgh.

There are those around the league who believe that Tepper is eyeing Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert, whose contract is up after this season, and/or vice president of football and business administration Omar Khan, according to league sources.

Tepper was a minority owner of the Steelers but is in the process of selling his interest in Pittsburgh.

Tepper knows Colbert and Khan, has worked with both men and respects them -- and some sources think he would like to try to find a way to bring them to Carolina.

Colbert owns a home in Hilton Head, South Carolina, about a three-hour drive from where the Panthers train. Tepper has stayed in close contact with both since he left the Steelers.

The Panthers (6-6) fired longtime head coach Ron Rivera on Tuesday, two days after a home loss to the lowly Redskins (3-9) extended their losing streak to four games.

Tepper said he "thought it was time" to fire Rivera, saying he was "informed of other teams doing different types of searches out there, and I'm not going to start a search and not tell Ron Rivera I'm starting a search. Too good of a man.''

Tepper did not fire general manager Marty Hurney, but he said nothing that seemed to ensure that Hurney would remain with the organization long term. Tepper also plans to name an assistant general manager to focus on pro personnel evaluation and a vice president of football operations.

This is where we'll see if having the richest NFL owner helps.  JR would never have spent top money to bring in executives, but this is where Tepper could easily pay off.  Poach some of the top guys from the top teams in the league, get the best people you possibly can, and then let them work.

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette confirmed this story.

From the article...

Tepper’s interest began long before his team started 5-7 and fired coach Ron Rivera. Last year, he hired Mark Hart, the Steelers vice president of planning and development, to a similar position with the Panthers.

Colbert is under contract with the Steelers until after the 2020 draft but, in mutual agreement with team president Art Rooney II, elected not to sign a contract extension this year. Colbert, 62, told Rooney he wanted to go year-to-year and didn’t want to sign a multi-year extension.

Another name to consider: Brandon Hunt.

Hunt is currently the Steelers Pro Scouting Coordinator. Longtime Steelers writer Ed Bouchette tagged him as the guy most likely to replace Kevin Colbert if he leaves (not Omar Khan, a fact which might not make Khan all that happy).

Since Tepper stated that he wants the new VP position to have a pro scouting background, it's not hard to imagine that Hunt might be somebody he'd target. There's also the Steelers connection, and add on that he fits the profile of a young guy who could easily just slide into the GM job like Tepper mentioned.

Even if we didn't end up with Colbert or Colbert came on only as a temporary consultant to help us get things organized, getting Hunt could be a real positive. Getting both Hunt and Omar Khan (widely considered the best salary cap expert in the league) would be amazing.

As an aside, Hunt would be the first African American to hold that high an executive position with the Panthers. Don Gregory would previously have been the highest as former Director of College Scouting.

    • They had best show out in Week 1 there are zero,I mean zero,  excuses for that offense  defense, haven’t play together yet and they still have Mr Soft and Predictable as DC  I expect break downs at times  …but that offense returns all starters except Tremble and both Mayes and Brady are veterans and can play LG and know the system not up for any participation awards this season they can save that practice energy for Jacksonville.     I’m sick of the, winning,  or looking competitive, when it doesn’t matter.
    • There are some tough decisions that I'm eager to see the results of... Does Blackshear sneak on to the roster as RB4? Does the team go with 4 TEs or just 3 again? And has Mitchell Evans done enough to defend his roster spot from James Mitchell? Who is WR6 and is there a WR7? TMac, XL, Coker, and AT seem to be locks imo and I'm assuming Renfrow also makes it due to all of the camp praise. Who makes it between Brycen Tremayne, Jimmy Horn Jr, and David Moore? If the team goes with 7 WRs, which one of those three doesn't make it? Jacolby George and Emani Bailey both have not gotten a lot of game time. Could the Panthers be trying to hide them so that they can be stashed on the PS? Do they go with 10 OL instead of 9? Who makes it out of Walton, Carter, and Kingston? DL locks are DB, BB3, ARob, and Turk. That leaves Jaden Crumedy, Cam Jackson, Sam Roberts, Shy Tuttle, and LaBryan Ray all competing for the final 1 - 3 spots. Does DJ Johnson get IR'd and Thomas Incoom make the roster as EDGE5? What in the fuuuuuuuuuuuuck is going to happen at LB? Only locks are Wallace, Rozeboom, and Cherelus (Wallace has mentioned in media how Cherelus has been big bro for him on the team) seem to be locks. Rhattigan had some good moments against Houston, Martin-Scott is an SC guy, Krys Barnes has popped on defense and on special teams, and Windmon got time starting for the team last season. Are two of those guys going to make it or are the Panthers poaching from another team's cuts? CB5... who is it? Do they go with the 4 expected safeties or bring in a 5th? Has Ransom done enough to take the start from Nick Scott?
    • I had this discussion with my buddy yesterday afternoon. If we start this season very slow(especially with the schedule being what it is) and then "rally" in the second half to get to 4-7 wins, I am already gonna be pretty heated at the staff overall. I know we are a very bad roster but I am not gonna keep excusing these slow season starts WITH late season rallies. That's a coaching staff problem, IMO. It's more excusable to just stink gate to gate, IMO. At least you can understand why.
