PFF Source: Outside the box head coaching hire for Carolina?

I didn’t see this posted yet, and wanted to share an article yesterday from pro football talk about a possible “outside the box” head coach hire according to a “source With knowledge of the teams plan”. What are your thoughts on this? 
 

STORY:

“Panthers owner David Tepper’s first significant imprint on the team could be an intriguing one.

Per a source with knowledge of the team’s plan, an “outside the box” coaching hire isn’t out of the question in Carolina. While that’s a broad statement that seemingly would encompass any hiring beyond the conventional universe of candidates ( offensive/defensive coordinator with no head-coaching experience, former NFL head coach, college head coach), the acknowledgement of an outside-the-box move came in direct response to the question of whether the Panthers would pursue a coach who currently serves as the head coach of another team.

Under league rules, that’s permissible. The formal procedure entails the team contacting the coach’s current team, expressing an interest in hiring him, and engaging in negotiations regarding compensation (if, of course, the coach’s current team doesn’t hang up the phone). If an agreement on compensation is reached, the team hoping to hire the coach then may discuss the subject directly with him.

As a practical matter, the pieces fall into place via conversations that never officially happened, with the team learning that the coach would like to make the move, with the coach learning what the team would pay, and with the team determining whether the coach’s current team would be receptive to a formal attempt to hire the coach, if a formal attempt were made.

It rarely happens; the most significant example came in 2002, when the Bucs hired Jon Gruden from the Raiders for two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and $8 million in cash. If it were to happen again, it definitely would be regarded as outside the box.

If that’s the direction in which the Panthers go, the most obvious candidate would be Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. Although Tomlin arguably has done the best coaching of his career this season, Tepper, a multi-billionaire and former Steelers minority owner) may be willing to pay Tomlin much more than the Steelers ever would — and Tepper may be willing to replace the first-round pick the Steelers gave up for Minkah Fitzpatrick, and then some.

Remember when Tomlin’s name came up in connection with the Washington vacancy and, when asked bout it, he didn’t shout it downconclusively and completely? If nothing else, real interest in Tomlin from teams like Carolina and Washington becomes significant leverage in his dealings with the Steelers, where some minority owners reportedly wanted him out after the 2017 season and reportedly didn’t want him to get an extension through 2021, with a team option for 2022. (Tepper was among the minority owners until he bought the Panthers in 2018.)

Making an effort to hire Tomlin even more plausible (or less implausible) is the weekend report from ESPN.com that some around the league believe that Tepper will try to hire Steelers G.M. Kevin Colbert and/or Steelers V.P. of football business and administration Omar Khan. Colbert’s contract runs through the 2020 draft; Khan’s contract status isn’t currently known.

However it plays out, the timeline is expected to commence with the hiring of a coach, followed by the hiring of an executive V.P. of football operations. Soon enough, we’ll learn whether Tepper will be trying to turn flip black and gold to black and blue.

He definitely has enough green to do it.”

You can't do that anyway. The NFL banned that.

The fact the writer doesn't know that makes me question what exactly he does know at all.

Not only that but Tepper was part of the minority group that wanted to ax tomlin. I’m just speaking as if that were possible. I would stop watching.

Edit: I googled it and couldn't find anything recently, not that I looked for long.

Lol. I stopped clicking things that were touted as PFF long ago. PFT just keeps posting to bury the stuff they get wrong, like the opinion pieces that sound like they were written by player's agents. Still, I didn't look long but I couldn't find any rule changes or announcements from the NFL about not trading draft picks, just a bunch of articles from pre-2104 about coach trade possibilities.

      Let's be completely honest about this... Our WR room is AT and a bunch of question marks. Thielen is the only guy we know who knows the route tree completely, understands play calls and can regularly get open/beat close coverage when necessary. He's long in the tooth, isn't the speediest guy on the field but he plays like a pro, starting level wide receiver. Xavier, last season looked great at first, but man he kind of petered out down the stretch and would disappear in a number of games. He wasn't reliable on routes or getting open and where he was supposed to be a king at contested catches, he often looked a bit intimidated. I'm not saying he's a washout by any means. Anyone with his size, speed and catch radius could make it big in the NFL, but can he do it? He'll need to show more than he did in the preseason before we can really rely on him as a WR1 or WR2.  Coker was a revelation last season, he really played way above his (non)draft status and flashed multiple times in games and was a steady performer. What we need to find out, though, is whether he was benefiting from being an unknown that wasn't getting maximum effort from opposing DBs or if he was just outworking and outhustling everyone on the field. We should find out this season. We sure as hell didn't find out much in the pre-season (from him or any receiver or QB for that matter). He's still a question mark, but I think he has the look of the real deal. He might be this generation's next Thielen. Now, let's talk about Tet. High first round draft pick, first true WR off the board this year. Stellar career out west in college. Has the swagger of the WR1. And man, y'all are going to get mad about this but... he comes across as a mook. And in the pre-season he performed, well, not so great against poor opposition of second and third stringers. Yeah, he caught that one moonshot ball in the first game but really, nothing else lighting the place up. Rookie endzone drop in that game, too. He's still young and adjusting, I'm sure, but I was hoping to see something of a breakthrough kind of guy. I'm still looking. Hunter Renfro? Gosh, I hope he can make the team and make a comeback to his old form. It would be such a great story. But maybe neither one of those happens. We won't know until Tuesday and then, if he makes it past there it could be weeks. So, TL;DR: AT is all we can bank on right now. We couldn't afford to let him go considering the number of unknowns we'd be throwing out there for our QB, who himself is still an unknown. One thing to add: Our receivers coaching group has their work cut out for them. I hope they are up to the task, but the pre-season gave me little reason to believe in them. And I really need something to believe in here in Carolina.

      Same I think Randsom is a baller..... hopefully we don't have to suffer through 4-8 games of Scott blowing azz to get him on the feild.

      Linebacker is the biggest need - I hope we figure out a way to address it. Krys Barnes is the only one who even moderately flashed.  Super nervous about Trevin/Rozeboom as a duo (Still like Trevin) I'd be excited if we had a better vet to mentor Trevin.  Or a better younger guy to support Rozeboom.  They just don't fit well and it may be a big problem against the run, even with our DL much improved.
