Season is over, let's talk about some prospects!

I'd fall over myself to get Andrew Thomas with our pick but I think he's the first OT off the board and long gone. Wirfs has all the tools, but I have to wonder why he was a career RT at Iowa. Can he play LT in the NFL? Austin Jackson intrigues me.  On the other side of the ball, I'd love to have Derrick Brown (likely gone) or Javon Kinlaw.

I think there's a pretty good chance that we'll be sitting on the clock with a choice to make between a really good OT prospect an a really good DT prospect and I expect lots of debate on which one we should take. Honestly, I could go either way. We could desperately use either.

Trenches all day long.  Serious outside of a QB prospect in round 1 or 2, I really want to build some depth along the lines.  We got exposed this year badly.

So that's two of you now

I think once the evaluators start really getting into the nitty gritty on him, he'll drop on a lot of boards.  In fact, I've already seen several talk about the fact that there is nothing about his play that stands out and that he doesn't often step up in big moments.  Everyone agrees that he has the ideal skillset teams are looking for, but it only translates into average performance.  There's no single thing he consistently does that makes you sit up and say "WOW!"

He might get picked higher than I believe he should, but if that happens, it will likely be a team that falls in love with his skillset and thinks they can fix the rest.  And that's something I'm not overly comfortable with.

Potentially still could, though.

Not as much need to do it right now.

If the team decides to move on from him, I'd rather wait until the offseason and trade him.  It's doubtful we could recoup the 2nd we used on him, but he does have talent to burn, he just needs to learn to control it, and I have no doubt someone would be willing to pony up at least a mid-round pick for him.

Makes me think of Jeff George (minus the attitude).

To a degree.  George was more dynamic, whereas Herbert is smoother to me.  George was full of WOW plays, but then was just as likely to come out with a WTF play.  IMO, his biggest problem was his attitude and ego.  Herbert, on the other hand, seems like a really good and laid back kid.  From everything I have heard about him, his teammates and coaches love him and he's a hard worker.

To be fair, I don't think Oregon's offense did him any favors, and I saw a lot of inconsistency from his receivers.  So there is a degree of forgiveness for some of his issues.  But it seems that when the pressure is on, he starts forcing things and can get wild in his throws, and he starts to make some bad decisions.  I think that's what's so frustrating about him.  You see the possibilities, but there's far too much of the negatives.

And I'm a believer that you either have the ability to handle pressure or not.  You can coach around it a bit, but there is going to come a time when you're going to need to ball up and put the team on your shoulders.  And I'm just not sure Herbert is ever going to be that guy you want leading your team in the big moments.

we really need to focus on the lines.

but I think you almost have to be aware of what a deep WR class this is....I mean you could get a great WR at a spot you likely couldn't in other years.

Yeah and if one drops you have to take him for sure. We just need talent and if that's WR you go with it.

I disagree with some of the Herbert comments.  He is a very good prospect and certainly not a finished product but room to get better.  He has been much better all around this season.  He will go very early.  Good leader and super smart and great person as well.

I was thinking that it is funny that when it comes to the draft you hear the good version the prospect could be but not the bad version he could be, like a range.

Maybe he is Matthew Stafford but he could  Blaine Gabbert if 'blank' isn't fixed or he doesn't improve under greater pressure that he will see in the NFL.
