The Riddle of Greg Roman

I know a lot of fans wanted him here, but there's no indication the Panthers have reached out to him...or will.  Heck, the only team that actually did so far was the Browns.

I've heard Roman referred to as a "unique" personality. That could mean a lot of things, both good or bad.

Is Roman still a guy you'd want the Panthers to go after? Why or why not? And why do you think they haven't?

Bellinchek has a unique personality too....

Ravens fans say he's a bit shy and socially awkward;  strictly a booth guy

Kinda my interpretation based solely on a couple interviews or times I've heard him speak.  Seems like a dude who just wants to sit, watch film, and run an offense.  Deal with the media constantly, oversee all three sides of the ball, command a room?  Doesn't seem like his thing to me.

Weird comparison, but he's Eugene from the Walking Dead to me.

He is smart and that’s exactly what we need after Ron.   Press conference skills can be zero for all I care, just draw up next level plays and use analytics as Tepper would want.

That's fine for a coordinator. Head Coaches must do a heck of alot more than that.

Here's an ESPN article from earlier this year that better explains his personality.  Tepper may consider him too old school for his analytics HC job. He may not use analytics at all.   https://www.espn.com/blog/baltimore-ravens/post/_/id/51434/greg-romans-wise-cracking-rise-from-high-school-coach-to-ravens-offensive-guru

Quote

It was during those seven years with the expansion Carolina Panthers that Roman learned from coaches who began their careers in the 1960s and picked up their vernacular.

Roman is teaching an offense that's never been seen in the NFL, and he's doing so by using one-liners from generations ago while breaking down film.

...

“I’m big on gut,” Roman said with a smile. "If it feels right, I’m going to use it."

...

Amid the zingers, he routinely offers words of encouragement, and no one on the Ravens has ever heard him yell.

"For me, I almost see him as a dad figure," fullback Patrick Ricard said. "He doesn’t get mad at you. He’s a disappointed dad. He’s going to get on you. He wants the most out of you. And when you mess up, he’s just like, ‘Come on, man.’"

[Bold is my emphasis.] And those one-liners he uses have nothing, zero, nada, to do with analytics: He doesn’t know whether to s--- or wind his watch

I don’t want Ron 2.0 who is high on locker room morale and PR, and low on winning percentage. Don’t act the part of coach, don’t look part of coach - win them rings, the end.

That's why engineers and developers don't run corporations.
