FWIW... New head coaching hires versus experienced head coaching hires

Holmgren and Carroll didn't. Shanahan did but he always liked to say Denver was his first real head coaching job.

Schottenheimer, Parcells and Carroll each had more than two, if I recall correctly.

Several had more than two stops, but in many instances that was the 'sweet' spot in their coaching careers.

I like a experienced head coach who already has idea of organizational running and a idea about staff.. If it's a young coach they usually have to hire a retread to help them.. Example

Ron needed a vet coach on his staff and would have done better his 1st 2 years if he had 1..

How could I forget about Tony Dungy!  Perfect analogy to McCarthy.  The Bucs canned Tony after a sub-par 9-7 season and he went to Indy, turned their franchise around and won a ring.

FYI, McCarthy is already 30th in wins all-time after just 13 season as HC.

Lotta people say the Bucs owe Dungy a Super Bowl ring.

What's interesting is if you split Bill Parcells career up into 2 parts.  One part with Bill Belichick on his staff, and one part without.  Its roughly 12 seasons vs 7, and the difference is pretty notable.  In the 7 seasons without Belichick, Parcells never even won a playoff game.

Peyton was significantly more important than Dungy in terms of Indy's rise.

Belichick has 1 playoff win in his entire career as a HC or DC (pushing 30 years)...…where he didn't have either the luxury of the greatest offensive player or defensive player in the history of the sport.

I'm not arguing Bill ain't a great HC or defensive guy.

But in a talent driven sport Bill has also been comically fortunate in his career.

How many Super Bowl teams have mediocre rosters?
