Looking at Rhule's one year in the NFL

Matt Rhule's only year of NFL experience was 2012 with the New York Giants. They wen't 9-7 that year and missed the playoffs, so just a 16 game sample size. And yes, he was the assistant OL coach, which doesn't mean a whole lot, but still interesting to look at how their OL fared that year with him involved in coaching it:

From https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2012/index.htm :

In the passing game, the Giants were first in the league in sacks allowed with only 20 all year (this with a very immobile Eli at QB). Next best was Broncos with 21 and then Bucs and Saints with 26. Average was 36.5. Fair to say they had one of the best, if not the best, pass blocking OLs in the league.

In the run game, they were 14th in rushing yards with 1,862, 5th in rushing TDs with 18 and 7th in Y/A with 4.6. This was with Ahmad Bradshaw as their main running back and while they had an explosive rookie in David Wilson as well, he was in Coughlin's dog house for much of the year due to fumbling early. Not exactly the best RB group, and still a top rushing unit.

Offensive linemen

Above are the players he had to work with. Of that group, the only ones who were ever Pro Bowlers or All-Pro were Chris Snee (Pro Bowl that year, and three other years, as well as one first team All-Pro and two second team) and David Diehl (one Pro Bowl and two second team All-Pros).

Overall, I'd say this was a pretty damn good job, but of course should be taken with a grain of salt considering he was the assistant OL coach, not the OL coach. Take it for what it's worth.

You posted about one year of NFL experience coaching an OL. The basis of this thread is irrelevant.

Then why would you click on it? Some may find it slightly interesting. I did. It probably means nothing. But who knows.

But College Man Bad

College Man no Work in NFL

some college guys work out great.  You never know.

But Rhule just went 0-11 vs the top 25 while at Baylor.  Hard to automatically think he is the key to the Super Bowl.

    • That depends on where he's at because if you look at his first 3 seasons before he got sick he had 49 rec as a rookie followed by 56 and then his pro bowl season he had 103 rec. If he's somewhere between seasons 2 and 3 then that wouldn't be bad at all. We'll have to wait and see but from the few clips I've seen and the comments I've heard and read I wouldn't be surprised if that is the case. Personally, I'm really pulling for him and I think he's going to be the comeback player of the year.
    • More praise of Renfrow from Tim Weaver (formerly of USA Today's Panthers Wire, now SI.com), and also what I told some of you, my Huddle friends, from the start: keep it all in perspective, and don't conveniently---and perhaps unfairly, discount and label Renfrow as a JAG when it was a very debilitating illness affecting his play.    "It's understandable to be skeptical about Renfrow's abilities at this late point in his career. After all, he missed all of last season due to a bout of ulcerative colitis that also took a serious toll on his production in 2022 and 2023."   When Renfrow is healthy, he's an above average guy. Being 29 may hurt or help his chances depending upon perspective, but 29 for receivers generally means that there's still (sometimes plenty) gas in the tank. Renfrow also obviously has plenty of motivation and has come with his game face.   "Then agan, seeing is believing and by all accounts Renfrow has been very impressive since joining the Panthers a few months ago... Where Renfrow will fit in Carolina's new-look receiver corps remains to be seen, but at this rate it's going to be hard to exclude him from the initial 53-man roster." https://www.si.com/nfl/panthers/hunter-renfrow-sick-route-panthers-training-camp Read the room, ladies and gentlemen. And don't get it twisted; Renfrow isn't the most talented receiver on the team, but we have seen his ceiling, when healthy, in a Raiders offense that wasn't necessary replete with talent. Consider what he can do, especially in the slot, in a Panthers offense primed with young talent (no pun intended). From sick to "sick routes," eh?
