Did the Patriots try to sabotage McDaniels?

From Patriots reporter Tom Curran...

When Tuesday morning dawned, Josh McDaniels was set to get on a plane to Charlotte to sit with the Panthers for their head coaching vacancy. Wednesday, he’d be in New York to talk to the Giants.

But before lunchtime, both jobs were filled. McDaniels — presumed to be a leading candidate for both the Panthers and Giants — had put on his suit and straightened his tie in the mirror for nothing.

There’s still a Friday interview scheduled with the Browns for their vacancy, but the fast-moving process and the Patriots asking McDaniels to hold off interviewing until Tuesday so he could button up end-of-season write-ups undeniably cost him a shot at pitching himself.

Joe Judge, the Patriots special teams/wide receivers coach, ultimately got the Giants job. His interview timeline was a lot different than McDaniels’. Judge interviewed with his alma mater Mississippi State on Sunday, the day after the Patriots were eliminated from the playoffs.

With Mississippi State pushing Judge for an answer, Judge got the OK to sit with the Giants.

The shutting doors that left McDaniels out in the cold began closing Tuesday morning when the Panthers decided to hire Baylor coach Matt Rhule and cancel the McDaniels interview.

The Giants were also high on Rhule. Having missed out on him, they were now were wary of losing Judge to Mississippi State. Strange but true.

Meanwhile, the Giants presumed McDaniels, who interviewed with the Giants in January 2018 and was leery of the head coach/GM setup with Dave Gettleman in place, would have the same concerns this time. So rather than miss out on Judge, they made their move and hired him.

Judge’s candidacy was buttressed by a “glowing” recommendation from Bill Belichick that reportedly played a “huge” role in the Giants’ decision.

It’s easy to conclude there’s a level of disappointment for McDaniels with the way this played out.

Would that make him more inclined to take the Browns job? Doubtful. He’s carefully measured his steps since coming back to the Patriots, and jumping to the Browns without being confident in their direction would be foolish.

Delaying interviews cost McDaniels his shot at the Giants and Panthers jobs

Last year, right before Nick Caserio was set to be named the GM in Houston, the Patriots organization filed tampering charges against the Texans. Those charges turned out to be totally phony, but they screwed up the process enough that Caserio lost out on the job.

This year, all the signs were pointing to Josh McDaniels leaving. But just as his schedule opened up due to the playoff loss, the Patriots (just as a procedural thing of course) asked him to delay his interviews for the purpose of completing some end of season exit interviews. At the same time, not only did they allow ST Coach Joe Judge to go ahead and interview for the Giants, but they also giving him a "glowing recommendation" which ultimately helped him get the job.

Hmm...

Now granted, McDaniels still has the Browns interview scheduled, but they're the Browns. More than one analyst has speculated that the new organization system Jim Haslam has set up isn't to McDaniels liking. He reportedly wants a system that revolves around the head coach, like it does in New England.

And now Curran and other Patriot reporters who previously felt absolutely certain that McDaniels was gone are speculating that he just might be back.

Funny how things work out, eh? :Eyes_Emoji_42x42:

Two things:

1. Sounds completely par for the course for that organization.

2.Karma’s

a

bitch.

The Caserio thing got them one more year, which turned out to be a lousy one. They've claimed the charges were legit and have reportedly been trying every trick in the book to get him to stay on longer, but he's refusing (basically all but flipping them off).

As with Caserio though, I'm sure they'd tell McDaniels "Oh, we're sorry. We didn't mean for that to happen. We just didn't know."

Right :Eyes_Emoji_42x42:

Pretty sure Satan dresses up as Belichick for Halloween.

Now that it’s over, I have no problem stating I think the organizer “dodged a bullet” in a major way.by not getting McDaniels. Never have bought into him.

We may have made the right choice. Will take some time to know.

I'm just one of those people that feels better making sure I check out all my options before I buy, and I'm not running a billion dollar business.

I'd feel better if the person who is was a little more measured and a little less impulsive in his decision making.

I’m with you on that. I made a post yesterday to the effect of “as measured as Tepper has seemed so far, he wouldn’t do anything compulsive. Rhule must have been his first choice all along.”

According to Tepper himself, this was a total impulse buy. Not sure how I feel about that.

I didn’t have a preference except anyone but him. Not really my place anyhow. This is a long term decision and I’m gone if Cam goes. I thought Rhule was as good as any, but all had their strong points. The only comment I ever made was “If Im Tepper, I make sure I sit down with Matt Rhule”. I never imagined it would happen.

It did seem.a little “rushed”. But who knows how long he’s been his choice. Ask me again in May and I might have a different point of view....lol.

I know Rhule was probably the choice of 1% of the fan base up until he was announced.

I have been optimistic about Tepper precisely because his background gave me confidence in his decision making process. Rhule may indeed turn out to be a great coach and I certainly hope he does, but like you, hearing that Tepper made an impulse purchase on his first HC hire made me uneasy.

I would have hoped that years of running Appaloosa would have made him more resistant to the effects of pure charisma. To be fair, they did say the interview meeting lasted for hours, so perhaps he just got an increasing sense they were on the same page, which is actually what he said, but still...
