Did the Patriots try to sabotage McDaniels?

I think Tepper likes them both. But when you’re in the room with Rhule and everyone is vibing I think you have to realize that you go get the guy. Tepper had a feeling and confirmed it at the meeting I don’t think it was ‘impulse’ in the sense of seeing a shirt on a rack that you’ve never seen and buying it for a million dollars. McD may very well also be a great choice at the end of the day. They may both pan out, we just made sure we got one of the people who pan out.

Yeah, I doubt it was as much impulse as it was simply knowing he was your #1 choice and not wanting him to get on that plane to NY. I don't buy the Giants' spin on this one bit. I think we beat them to the punch in their guy.

I am basing the notion it was impulse on two things:

Teppers own account of how the meeting went.

The Huddle’s near religious reaction to Rhule’s charisma at the presser.

But I still hope you’re right, because that would be more reassuring about his long term decision making process.

If you want him and you let him get on that plane you might not get him.

Look, you’re talking to a guy who has done 1500 in home sales appointments over the last 5 years in which he asks people for a yes or no THAT DAY on a purchase that is almost always over 7k and sometimes over 20k. Believe me, I don’t just know strike while the iron is hot, I live it.

I’m just still a little uneasy about the circumstances surrounding the hire because they don’t come across as carefully weighed and minimally impacted by emotion, which is what you expect from a billionaire hedge fund manager.

Crossing my fingers that it’s more the way you’re describing and less the way it seems.

Browns media is saying the Panthers picked Rhule because McDaniels wanted Browns job as his number 1 choice and felt like waiting on McDaniels could cost them Rhule who was the Panthers #2 choice

I think this is probably accurate.  You have to think there was some sense of urgency after the Cowboys snatched up McCarthy.

I understand why some are skeptical of this move, but I’m excited.  Jerry Richardson would never do something like this.

I'll admit, even if we still ultimately settled on Rhule, I do wish we had at least interviewed McDaniels.

I'd feel a lot better about the process if we had explored all the available options.

Somehow I just don't think McDaniels was high on either the Giants or our Radar. Teppers literally carried in Rhules luggage so he could talk to him. The giants had a jet on the tarmac waiting for us to blow the interview. It's crazy how it worked out but maybe teams were not as sold on McDaniels as the media was.

I think there may be something to this view.  McDaniels is clearly an intelligent and successful OC.  However, he does come with a less than attractive history as HC and his media events in Denver never left me with a warm fuzzy like Rhule did today.  Marty is a big "feels" sort of guy and I can see where he would not be looking forward to working with someone like McDaniels.

I'm clearly not objective because of my stated loathing of McDaniels, but I find this notion entirely plausible. Wouldn't be the first time the media was off base.
