Okudah is the perfect Rhule draft pick

At the moment, we have a pretty nice chunk of change in the cap box---Marty will spend it quickly, but for now, we have cap room ($30m) If Olsen retires and they release Poe, we have about $20m more.  To talk about who you have to take in the draft, when we could easily have $50-70m in cap room, depending on what they do with Cam, is pointless.

Let's say we re-sign Bradberry and Addison and have $30m left.  Cam is healthy.  You sign a DT, a G, and a S in free agency--all starters.  Your OL coach tells you that Little will be ready to step in at LT this fall--he simply needs a camp and some coaching.   He feels that Paradis will be OK, but encourages some youth to groom at C.

Now how does the draft look?

Thinking:  "I do not need a starting OT as previously thought, I do not need a S, I do not need a G or 3tech DT.  I need a nose/1 tech DT, I could use a CB opposite Bradberry, and I could use a WR.

Suddenly, Jeudy and Okudah are looking pretty dang good.

Agreed. Even if he's not a bust, I don't think we have to be married to Little at LT. He can play other spots on the OL & Thomas would be a clear upgrade there.

I think he needs to be moved to G.  He has less to work on to become a top G>

yup

a couple good moves in FA and we can afford to grab BPA in the draft. this team isn't as far off as people assume.

I'm seeing a lot of mocks showing the Lions grabbing this guy with the 3rd pick.

If they stay in the #3 slot, this seems like a plausible scenario. Lots of chatter about the Lions possibly being willing to trade back also.

Raiders want a QB and would go out on a limb to get Tua from Alabama.  Give up the 12th and the 19th to move to 3rd.

Haven’t done any research at all yet, but just knowing the team I want the top player at OT, DT, or CB in that order at #7. The best of one of those three positions is bound to be available at 7. In the second, top C available or any other lineman. If value isn’t there in the trenches with our second, then the best DB available. That’s pretty much it for my wants at this point.

He's good

But when you have the worst DL in Football, with the leagues worst run defense

And the leagues 3rd worst pass protection OL.

Your team is going to be terrible.

Games are won in the trenches, and we are the leagues worst at both sides.

I get it---I want Brown (but would take Wirfs--my favorite tackle in the draft--or Thomas IF we know for certain that Little is a bust (we have not seen enough to know that--he has  missed too much to judge him on such a small body of work) --Hope we sign Bradberry.  To be honest, it is really pointless to debate who we are going to pick until later in March--after free agency.

I get that you think we shouldn’t give up on Little yet and I’m inclined to agree to a point, but my thinking is that if we bring Cam back, we cannot let the franchise qb’s health rest on that uncertainty. If Cam returns and Thomas or Wirfs are available at 7, I think the smartest thing you can do is take on3 of those guys to maximize the chance of extending Cam’s career and effectiveness.

If Cam isn’t gonna be here or both top tackles are off the board, I do like the CB, as I think the drop off between him and later round cb propects is greater than the drop off from Brown to later round DT’s. I also think Varkings point about how well he would fit Rhule’s system is valid.

If the #7 pick is anything other than OT or DT, something has gone horribly wrong.

We're not one piece away from a Super Bowl. There's no one OT or DT that will fix our team. There's not even a garuntee the only top 10 OT on the board will be there when we pick.

I don't think Okudah makes it past the Lions (of course, it's only January.) But goddamn you don't build a team by just looking at your biggest weakness and going "WE HAVE TO FIX THIS."

WR, Secondary, IOL, and IDL are our big needs. If we can get one of those in the top 10 we've improved as a team.

    • Good Lord this board has become a cesspool of negativity and where fandom becomes something twisted and unrecognizable.
    • Yeah, I could jump right into the unbelievable Bryce debate now that some people are trying to flip the script because Bryce Young has, at most, a handful of decent games as a pro, but that's going to work itself out. Suffice it to say that I've seen better QBs (with an s) in a Panthers uniform, and I've certainly seen better QBs be drafted while we're playing around with Bryce, one of them who beat the crap out of us already this season... Let's forget about Bryce (and his markedly underwhelming play since he's been here); I think that most sane fans will agree that drafting him was an error, but it happens. Sure, it doesn't happen to the tune of King's ransom---including your main receiver---but it happens. You bet, you lose. Speaking of receivers...and betting and losing... Oh, man, we drafted Xavier Legette. Yes, just like with Bryce, I've entered "the dark side." Some Huddlers were telling us from the beginning, and they were right. But, I'm not apologizing for waiting to see what a guy's got before making my decision on him. X was a one-year wonder at South Carolina who parlayed some really nice production that season, a great personality and thick country accent, into becoming a first round pick (but only in Carolina). For Dan Morgan and company, He was a big swing that has turned into a big whiff (and I can still feel the ill breeze from that one). Sh¡t happens, right? Well, not so fast. Ladd McConkey was the decidedly more polished receiver who was literally ready to hit the ground running as soon as stepping onto the field as a pro. Ladd was never the biggest guy (though not the smallest), but he was the guy that could run routes, always seemed to get open---no question---and had the same speed as X, but with legit quickness and nuanced shake and bake. But Dan chose the project. He chose the guy where the game speed looks more like a tractor trailer than a 5.0 mustang. Look, I've supported X (just like Bryce) many many a day, but no more. Now I'm not saying that I won't root for the guy. Just like with Bryce, he seems like a great kid. But as far as giving excuses for the kid, and, perhaps more importantly, waiting for some miraculous breakout, I'm done with that. I've seen enough. You don't draft a project for a project. And yes, Bryce had proven to be a project after his first season. In my mind, drafting a supposedly number one receiver that needs lots of development for a starting quarterback that needs immediate help to try and further his development is not going to lead to good things. Pick the surest guy. Or at least pick the one who appears to be the surest guy, because picking can be tricky... especially when you're too busy tricking yourself.
