What is Olsen waiting for?

Antonio Gates just retired. That would put Antonio in direct HoF competition in their first eligible year if Olsen also retired. That's two dominant TEs, not good for either's chances of making it.

This is perfectly emblematic of why I want him gone.

Like are we a working football team, or are we a staging ground for a Hall of Fame campaign? A source of leverage in a broadcasting contract negotiation?

I loved Greg as a player, but he isn't a player anymore. Time for him to hang it up and do something he still cares about.

I've got to disagree here. It wasn't his best season on record by far, but he outperformed the alternatives. And he spent a good portion of his time helping with blocking, something that's not his strong suit (which further reinforces the idea that the guys on the bench behind him aren't that good).

He is long in the tooth and slower and definitely more injury prone over the last three years than ever before, but until he can be replaced, he's really all we have there.

Since he didn’t play last year I believe Gates is eligible 4 years from now, not the same as Greg.

Actual retirement this year, but no games last year, so I'm at a loss as to when the clock officially starts for him. I'll bow to your experience on this one, though.

If he was as positive as you all are that this is going to be a complete five-year re-build wouldn't he have hung it up already?

probably waiting on the team to part with him because sometimes that is the easier way for your NFL career to end.

I don’t think he meets to make a decision right now.   He has a plan for the future in broadcasting so his post football career is pretty set.   He is most likely still mulling over playing again and there are a few factors,

does Carolina want him back?

is Cam coming back?

is there some other team that interests him?

He is in a pretty good position to sit back and evaluate his options.  Most people never never have choices like this when contemplating the future so I think he should take the time and make the most of it.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/01/29/report-fox-will-offer-greg-olsen-a-deal-as-soon-as-hes-done-playing/

Greg Olsen seemed to be saying his goodbyes to the Panthers at the end of the season, even though the veteran tight end is still under contract.

Now, he knows he has a safety net.

According to Richard Deitsch of TheAthletic.com, officials from Fox have made it clear that if Olsen is available next year, they’re offering him an analyst job.

He’s working for the network this week in advance of the Super Bowl, and will do XFL games this spring. He’s called games during bye weeks in the past, and has a smooth delivery that a lot of just-retired players do not.

He stayed mostly healthy last year after two years of foot problems, and caught 52 passes for 597 yards and two touchdowns (while working with backup quarterbacks), so he could still have useful football left in him, if he chooses.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NFL discourages player news, trades, hirings, etc. in the 2 weeks between the conference championships and the Super Bowl. They prefer players announce retirements and such after the SB and before the FA period starts. One of those unwritten things.

Burns can still be an effective 3rd down pass rusher in any scheme. His lean frame means he will probably never be a run stopper and it sucks that the Panthers spent a 1st round draft pick on a player that can't play every down, but it's too late to change that now.

On the original topic, Greg is most definitely waiting to see what happens with Cam. I don't think Greg wants to leave Cam hanging if the team decides to give him one more go of it.

Yeah...you don't draft a guy in the first round to be a situational pass rusher. Perhaps he could be Aldon Smith minus the issues? Perhaps he flames out. Either way, if we change back to the 4-3 it's a wasted pick and sets us back.

There is this misnomer that Burns doesn't fit in a 4-3 .. but he does.

50 lbs. of muscle he needs to add? Right now he's listed 6'5 250 lb.

Will probably add 10 lb. this off-season just because he's 21 and is still growing. 260 is heavy enough.

Aldon Smith.

He's not 250. That may be his listed weight but he's probably playing closer to 235, if you look at his frame.

He doesn't play at 250, come on now. He would be max playing weight of 230 to 240 if you look at him.

He bulked up to 250 for the combine and private workouts but there is no way he is 250 during the season.  He has a slender frame.  Not saying its a busted pick but the "negatives" about lack of weight and the running game are pretty spot on at the moment.
