Here's why we won't tank this year

It creates a losing culture and that's one thing a new coach, especially like Rhule won't do. It's not in him. College is different as you have to start with massive recruiting. He's starting with at least some talent. We may not have a very good team in 2020, but we'll have a team that fights and wins some games that we didn't think they could. If they build up enough 2021 draft picks, they can trade up or have the cap space to sign a great QB or if Cam shows he's back and healthy, then there it is. Then they've already started building around him by clearing space and drafting a fresh team around him this year.

Either way, we are not tanking, which is to lose on purpose. We may end up with 4 to 6 wins next year, but we probably won't win only 1 or 2 or even just 3 because we put the worse guys possible out there. This team will be young and hungry with coaches that are working on a winning culture. Heck, if Cam plays with CMC, I can see 8 wins. Not bad for a rebuilding year.

We damn near tanked last season and we cut or let go of any semblance of talent we had minus like three guys. We aren't going to win 5 games this season. We gave up over 5 yards per carry last year and our #1 CB is leaving, our HoF MLB retired, our TE is gone... we aren't going to be better with 0 good Free Agent signings and a draft that can only give us 1-2 starters. We are losing more than we gain at all times.

So.... how hard will it be to "tank" by losing 2-3 more games?

We have an owner and entire coaching staff with training wheels who's resident expert is Hurney. Anyone outside of the polar tank/don't tank people can see that we are probably facing the same outcome but not with the intention.

If Tepper wanted to start building a dynasty this offseason, he would have jettisoned Hurney and hired an expert or consultant to bridge to the expert he wanted. He didn't and it's reasonable to expect this year to be a huge learning curve. 2010 wasn't a tank year but had the same outcome due to ownership, a lame duck coach and Hurney.

Rhule isn't a lame duck but he has a bunch of leasons in the NFL to learn and needs to take his lumps. Hopefully he is a quick learner.

Tepper's actual football knowledge seems about zero. Hopefully he is willing to learn and not be a Haslam.

If they want to avoid a losing culture then they need to win and that is something we haven't done in 2 years with every indication the arrow is pointed down for now, regardless of intention. Our culture curently is a losing culture under Tepper. Tepper is staring down the barrel of 0-3 so intention is not the issue.

It’s the word tank that people can’t get over. I agree with you. If it bothers people, call it a full rebuild. None of us are saying that our players will try to lose, just that we sucked last year and the talent seems to have gotten worse. Trade Cam and you pretty much guarantee we are bottom 3. 2010 didn’t instill a losing culture for us, it just got us pick 1 and pick 9 the next two years and we started. The whole losing culture/Browns is so dumb. The Browns are the Browns because of horrific drafting. I think it was 2011 to 2016 that they had 9 first round picks and 1 of the 9 actually finished his 4 year rookie contract with the Browns and even he never played football after that. It wasn’t some culture that killed them. It was pure unadulterated lack of talent. Our rebuild will fail as well if we keep having drafts like the last two and continue to sign mediocre FAs to big money like Kalil and Poe and Paradis.

I'll be glad when we finally get things kicked off and start making moves so these basement dwelling types that only exist to discuss tanking will finally crawl back in their hole like we all know they will when the season begins.

There's a difference between actively tanking and actively being on the rebuild. The 49ers were 4-12 in 2018... that wasn't tanking, that was a complete remodel.

And it paid off. Quickly.

This narrative has got to stop -- http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/teams.nsf/histories/49ers

2014 - 8-8

2015 - 5-11

2016 - 2-14

2017 - 6-10

2018 - 4-12

There was nothing ''quick'' about their turn around, it was 5 completely poo seasons, and a ton of high picks over half a decade that set up the run they had this past season. They traded for Jimmy G in 2017, and if he hadn't gotten hurt in 2018 where they finished 4-12 they are never in position to select Bosa.

Not to mention they had four different coaches from - 2014 / 2015 / 2016 /2017 (Harbaugh, Tomsula, Kelly, and finally Shanahan), that organization was an absolute laughing stock until Lynch, and Shula showed up, but they also had the draft resources to work with, 2 seasons under .500 to start his tenure there, and three seasons at or below .500 before Lynch and Shanahan arrived.

A full blown tank is pretty much impossible. It would require the cooperation of people for whom it would have a significant negative effect on their careers.

Now, going into a season with a roster that's not necessarily stocked to "win now"? That's very plausible.

The 49ers show what happens when you start a QB like Grier or Clausen or Weinke. You can suck for a year and get a nice piece for the rebuild. Also, while the media painted the 49ers as a quick turnaround, they really weren’t. Look at the lauded DL. Bosa was huge, but Armstead, Buckner and Ward were 1st round picks in 2014-2016. They added Garoppolo and Sherman in 2017 and 2018 to a team with a series of high draft picks. Kittle was 2017. Heck, Staley’s been there since 2007.

Point is that the quick turnaround for SF wasn’t as quick as it seemed. 2018 was bad because Garoppolo missed the entire season. If he didn’t they probably were more like a 9-7 team in 2018.

    • If we pay Bryce like a franchise QB we're completely and utterly buttfuged.
    • In my view, the realistic expectation for this team to compete will start 2027.  At that time, I think we could be looking at the following (this is HIGHLY speculative):   QB:  You know, Bryce.  I am not a fan, but they don't ask me.  But there is reason for hope--and here it is.  Bryce will be entering his prime.  Since we are likely to pay him, there will be changes that I include throughout this exercise--I realistically speculate on what they are going to do with Bryce and then I realistically speculate on what means in terms of the cap and other positions. Bryce HAS IMPROVED.  The idea is that if you give him more weapons and protection, that will continue.  His career:   At this rate, if his growth continues, by 2027 we should expect nearly 30 TDs and about 12 Interceptions and a Rating of about 98.  His completion percentage should settle at 65-66% or so.  If that happens, you can win with it. The following stats demonstrate how the Panthers will be able to afford it (and re-sign Ickey) My guess is they will require about $60m per year. This is why rookies who can play are important.  It also helps us see the blueprint.  You may disagree, but this is the cruel realities of the salary cap. Robert Hunt:  Cut post June 1 and save $19m.  Who do you replace him with?  Ickey. Tershawn Wharton:  Cutting him saves nearly $15m.  We should all hope to see Aaron Hall (UDFA) make the roster and play well.  Regardless, this is a position we would likely have to address in the next draft. Trevin Moehrig:  Cutting Moehrig as the starting SS saves this team $16.5m.   Ransom will be on year 3 of a cheap rookie deal and should be more than ready to take the reins.  their styles are similar.  Furthermore, FS Wheatley (R, 4th round) will be starting. Taylor Moton:  So much depends on his knee, but I have an idea that he can play another 3 years.  extending him could save the team about $5m per year.  Cutting him outright would save the team about $21m. In the most drastic situation, we have to cut Moton and the other three players mentioned.   We would need (in all likelihood) a starting DT and RT.  It is possible that the DE would be addressed, but Wharton's production (so far) could be equaled by a rookie.  Look for a cut free agent and a 2027 draft pick here.  If you cut Moton, you save $21m, and that would be the only big hole to fill.  Having Ickey at RG gives you some depth at T, and Ickey could be the guy.  T could be pick in the 2027 draft (first round), fwiw.  It saves you $21m while costing you $5m, for example. We get younger, creating a core of Freeling, Hecht, and the RT first rounder in 2027) along with Ekownu (second contract in the $15m range, and Lewis, whose contract would be in the $16m range if not extended.)  The OL cuts (Hunt, Moton) would save $40m.  The OL would get younger and still solid with veterans at G.   By cutting Wharton (no brainer if his play stays the same) and Moehrig (good player--but we have Ransom on a rookie contract who would not be that much of a drop off--if any) in addition to Hunt and Moton, we would save over $70m in cap room. We would be able to give Bryce bag  and we would have enough to re-sign Ickey (if the knee is not too risky) to a Guard contract (probably at a discount, coming off that injury).  Furthermore, we could add a RT in the draft (or a RG if Ickey moves to RT) and that would be the only large hole to fill. Correct my logic if you see issues-- On defense, in addition to the aforementioned, Scott ($2m contract) is out, replaced by a 4th round rookie contract. CB Jackson's contract ($7.8m) expires and he is (possibly) replaced by a rookie contract.  At Edge, patrick Jones II's $10m contract expires and he is likely a reserve, and his role is absorbed by Phillips, Scourton, Princely, and possible an UDFA like Isaiah Smith or a 2027 draft pick.   These productive developmental players over the past 2 drafts will pay huge dividends.  On paper, I see the team getting much younger and possibly better while cutting nearly $100m and reallocating that money to get more production.
    • If everything played out and that last thing happened, I probably just quit.
