Italy also experiences high mortality rates due to influenza because they have a very aging population, the second largest portion of their population is 65 and older.

When you dig a little deeper into the story, it's pretty clear why Italy is having these issues.

Quote

Johnson suspects that the true fatality rate in Italy is closer to the global fatality rate of 3.4%

That's 40% or so less than the current mortality rate.
I was just suggesting another possible reason why the numbers are so high, not THE reason

So I got to thinking the other day:

9/11 was pretty much "the event" of my lifetime so far. By that, I mean that everyone in my age group will always remember that day and where they were, etc. Also, the fallout from it was so significant that it changed the world as we know it.

I'll be 40 this year, and I'm wondering how long before and if the Coronavirus will become that level of an event.

Anyone think we're already there, or at least approaching it fast?

yeah, this is going to be one of those thigns that fundamentally change how we approach our daily lives.

Things like going into an office every single day to moves 1s and 0s around, or going to college classrooms etc, that's going to be reexamined.

if you want to see how it will change politically, look at what's happening now. they're massive support in the country (on the left at least) for medicare for all programs.

on the right? a definite 2024 GOP candidate for president Tom Cotton is talking about going to war with china over this.

I mean, I’m not saying we won’t adapt and deal with it all.

But it is one do many examples of why global warming matters. Likely risking folks to new/old disease out of greed and laziness

I think drawing a direct line from this pandemic to global warming doesn't particularly help the case for people trying to educate on climate change. Climate change is a very real and very substantial threat to humanity. It is likely not at all a very serious threat to overall life on this planet, however, which has proven to be extremely resilient.

If there is a link from THIS virus to climate change, that will emerge over time and after serious study. I bristle at the need to say everything is "climate change" based on speculation and not hard research. It doesn't do credit to a cause I very much believe in(that being the very real dangers of climate change in the long term).

Digital communications, classrooms, sales presentations will become even more of "a thing" going forward.

Of course that is when you get an issue.

Should be a ton of things change as far as travel to certain areas also and be prepared for airports to be even more of a hassle

No. It will not be. We have seen two other coronavirus outbreaks in recent memory(SARS, MERS). In 3-4 years this will be a distant memory and we will be on to our new "pandemic" scare. These are going to be more frequent because the rate of global travel is so high. That's just the price of that luxury.

We are of similar age.  I think this will exceed it. I mean it is apples and oranges....but the impact at home to average people is greater (even at its infancy) and I think it eventually takes down hundreds of thousands.  Maybe more.

This is in its infancy and already has impacted us and the globe in ways the other viruses didn’t.   Not even close.

We aren’t even at the half way mark. Not even close.

Not picking on you kungfudude but this post will not age well. It is amazing to me how much information about the seriousness of this is available and yet people are still playing it down.
