Cam Newton: "They gave up on me"

NAS

Recommended Posts

this man took over 1,300 hits during his time here and got up from all of them. he was our emotional leader. he was our franchise quarterback. i will love him forever for what he did for us. there's no qualifiers. if he needs to feel this way to get back to being the best version of himself, i want that for him. i don't give love then take it back. this is my dude and i'll ride with him for every game as long as he doesn't play against us. he gave us so many memories. so many moments. not all good, but some larger than life. respect the man and how he has to handle this process. he didn't want it. it was put on him.

Racism, be it blatant, be it subtle, is an issue that concerns me, yes.

Nice to see you finally admit it doesn’t concern you.  Confession is good for the soul and the first step toward recovery.

It does concern  me because I don't engage in it and when I see it or hear it I make my feelings known that I don't like it or approve of it. On the other hand I don't go looking for it or color my interactions with a belief that everyone who isn't black is inherently racist. And if they aren't saying anything racist it just means they are being subtle. You find what you look for.

I'm still not 100% convinced this was about health alone. Was it a contributing factor? Of course. Was it the biggest variable? I really doubt it. $20M to allow your proven franchise QB an opportunity to get healthy is nothing. The draft picks garnered from a healthy Newton would be worth a lot more than $20M. But, let's just act like this was a business as usual decision. They don't like something about Cam and wanted to move on. Period.

I agree. I think they thought Cam wasn't a good fit for their offense. They didn't need a great runner, they needed a great passer. If this is going to look like New Orleans, how many times does Brees run? Exactly.  They needed someone who could get the ball out fast, could move around but stay in the pocket and was good against the blitz given that with 4 and 5 receiver sets, there are often guys blitzing who aren't accounted for. You have to make the right reads, know your audibles, see your hot reads and get the ball out quickly and accurately to give your receiver or back the ability to gain yards after the catch. And let's be real here, does that sound like Cam???

Finally somebody gets it.

So do we honestly think that in 2020 a player can't return from a lisfranc and shoulder soreness - after sitting for nearly a calendar year? Particularly someone that lives in the weight room anyway? We've actually had discussions on this board about Cam needing to lay off the weights. Something about flexibility and too much strength in his throws, or something like that.

Truth is I think it wasn't just about health. I don't think he was a good fit in this offense. This type of offense doesn't play to his skill set as I said in another post

Does Cam look wayyyy bigger To anyone else in all these IG posts? He looks way thicker than the last two injured years. Did he drop the diet and go back to a meat-based protein regiment? Because he looks like original Cam and not Vikram Yoga Cam of 2017-beyond.

Why is money the first thing someone always brings up in situation like these with athletes, like money just voids your ability to have emotions or strong opinions on how something was handled ? Can someone please enlighten me? This is really a concerning opinion most share on professional athletes.

So just because he made millions, in which he earned, he should just shut up and take any kind of treatment from the Fo of the organization?
Y’all can’t be serious today

I love me some Cam and don’t think he should pay anything back, but it’s kind of an overstatement to say he earned his check the past two years.

See that's the thing.  I like Cam, always have.  Followed him when he was at Auburn and prayed that The Panthers would draft him.  But I have learned that I don't dare critique his game because all the does is bring out racist's on both sides of the spectrum.  Certain players are off limits when it comes to critiquing their play.  That's just how it is.  Everyone is fair game unless it's a player that is worshipped like a God by their fans.

See that’s the thing, I’m not just an Auburn fan but an alum. I was on campus for every home game that magical year, some away games, the SEC Championship Game, *and* the National Championship Game.

Heard all the code words and worse about Cam, time and again, home and away.  Then I heard’em about him AND his Dad.  Gave a personal piece of my mind to many of those people.

He has NEVER been treated with the fairness and respect he deserves EVEN BY MOST OF HIS “FANS”.

So, yeah, you can be naïve in believing that gosh golly gee-whiz that kind of stuff just NEVER happens or happened in Charlotte! Nor in The Huddle, that forum for well known, open-minded Mensa members!  You can even try to convince me of that but you’d be wasting your time.

Every time I was accused of being a “hugger” or “worshipper” I didn’t deny it because, as I always said, Cam needed someone like me (and a few others) to at least tip the scale a little bit back in his favor from the constant poo he was served by Carolina “fans”.

I do know this though, with “loyal” fans like you, Mr. “Cam Fan”, he sure as hell doesn’t need anymore haters.

Like the other poster stated the revenue he has made for the panthers is more than enough to compensate him for last season, 2018 although injured, he only missed the last 2-3 games. I don’t think either side got shafted in money

It's the counter weight to the very obvious racial commentary and bigotry that has flowed his way. I sort of view it like the "MeToo" thing. It started out with people recognizing really abhorrent behavior, swung quickly in the opposite direction to wild accusations and nonsense towards everyone. Maybe this will settle in a reasonable middle, like everything else.

Yes, plenty of the criticism of Cam along the way have been obviously bigoted but that is absolutely not the basis for ALL of the criticism. He isn't infallible and he would probably tell you that himself.

I love Cam. I will always love Cam because he is one of the greatest players to ever play for this team and he made us relevant after we had fallen into the NFL basement. So I will defend him even against valid critiques because I can't be neutral. I feel the same way about most of my favorite Panthers of all time. Julius Peppers, Steve Smith, Luke Keuchly, etc.

I said the same thing after seeing a picture of his on IG earlier today. Looks like he realizes he needed that extra weight.

    • there is one common denominator in the 2003 & 2015 Carolina Panthers teams they both had ELITE top tier Qb play.  it would require a MVP type of season from Bryce Young to have the same type of success that Jake Delhomme had in  2003 & or Cam Newton in 2015 & lead this team to a SuperBowl is this going to happen or is there any reason to believe Bryce Young is capable of playing similar to Jake Delhomme in 2003 or Cam Newton in 2015 ? well no there is no absolutely NO reason whatsoever to believe that this is going to happen in 2026 ..just saying
    • I'd actually like to see Cherelus get a fair shot to win the job in camp. Wallace is decent in drop zone coverage, but he gets abused in the play action game and is often times out of position in the run game. It might just be me, but I swear every time I watch Wallace play, I see multiple plays a game were it looks like he's just trying to be blocked. Watching Cherelus last year he at least looked like he was trying to hit someone on every play. Wallace plays like a LB who doesn't trust what he sees and it makes him passive and cautious versus Cherelus who regardless of if his decision is right or wrong goes at it 100%.
    • Agreed.  Hasn’t happened to me either, but I feel very strongly about it.  That’s not just one of the worst things a woman could do to a man, it’s a power inherent to only women and is one of the worst things a HUMAN being can do to another.  A man can’t “hide” a pregnancy or maternity.  It’s impossible.  And that sucks for anyone that has to go through that. I always got a weird vibe off her and just found her very unlikeable.  Annoying even.  I’ve always been good at reading people and there was just something about her to me that was off-putting, somewhere under the surface.  And here we are…  she is despicable.
