This is a 4 year extension.  He will play the next two years under his rookie deal .  The advantage for him is that he get upfront money and guarantees, the advantage for the Panthers is that future salaries will go up with a new TV contract.

Actually he had a 4 year rookie deal with the option of a fifth year. So this would have been year 4 of his rookie deal. They thought he was too good to just pick up his 5th year option.

I don’t look at CMC as a Chris Johnson or Todd Gurley. CMC is more like Marshall Faulk or Curtis Martin. While a little high in dollar value, I think this is the right time for a deal like this.

He reminds me a lot of Faulk or LT.

I believe he said "someone like him"

So he’d rather have a 34 year old back at the tail end of his career who in 12 seasons has less receiving yards than CMC at age 24?  My point still stands.  I’d rather pay CMC 16 million a season than some aging vet 3 million

Winning makes us relevant, not having one good player on a losing team. He'll just be a stat you see scrolling across the bottom line updates rather than a guy getting headlines. That is what happens to great players on poo teams, unfortunately.

We sucked ass last year and yet McCaffrey was talked about every day as he marched towards 1k,1k. Even an injured Cam garnered national attention.

Tepper needs to have something to sell when his product isn’t winning and he himself said that may take a while.

So we are going to keep force feeding him during a 3 win season.  Yay!

Wow, a lot of butt hurt guys panning the deal who thought we’d keep Cam. Not surprising. It’s a lot of money, but with a rookie QB (have to dump Teddy, dumb signing) you’ve got a ton of space to use and five years of CMC from ages 24-28 is perfect for a rookie QB. He and Moore are our only weapons right now. I’d assume we’ll extend Moor next year as well. He’s one year behind CMC but same age at every step. He’d be 24-28 in the last year of his rookie contract plus 4 year extension as well.

Why did we have to do it now?

He was clearly just paid to be the centerpiece of this offense. (which he already was) He is almost making as much as the QB.

From a business standpoint, imagine losing Cam, Luke, Greg, and Christian all on the same offseason. (there was plenty of cmc trade talk) It would take quite a while to recover from that unless you’re holding the top pick in the draft.

    • I agree it is more about the OL. If you happen to have a world beater with a great OL then that’s better obviously but you don’t need to have that.  Capable and durable guys that can get to the second level with good blocking can be plenty.
    • I think Gibbs is special, but you’re right, some of the top investments have proven to not be much different than some 2nds and 3rds. Taylor for example is on an MVP level season. James Cook is doing better than Breece Hall for example. Raiders weren’t in a good spot to draft Jeanty. Same with the Falcons/Bijan.  You gotta swing at the right time — the investment shouldn’t come too early. You almost have to stumble into a guy mid to late rounds while building or find that guy to put you over the top when the team is finally well rounded.
    • Like I said in another post yesterday, the handling of the offensive line by Fitterer and mostly Morgan has been crazy. We've spent way too much money(Lewis and Hunt) to keep Bryce upright instead of using our picks in the 2nd round on JPJ and Frazier. Could have kept an injured Corbett at guard, Brady at swing, and still taken Maye as a backup, sorry Zavala. We wouldn't have taken XL, but XL hasn't been as advertised anyway, and Brooks hasn't contributed anything. Moton's extension with it's signing bonus made him uncutable. Icky's contract was due at the same time Bryce's 3rd year ended, and we all know it's extension or 5th year, and if we're going to do a 5th year, he's going to want the extension.  To me the whole thing is just ridiculous. Right now, depending on if Tepper decides to keep Bryce, it feels like we're going to have to choose between Icky and a Bryce extension. Maybe he plays on the 5th year, but I think he'll want the big money guarantee.  JMO, but if you took a look at how the contracts could potentially fall, the writing was on the wall that this could be a cash flow nightmare. Too many contract guarantees, not enough rookie contracts to offset the upcoming paydays.
