But why not cam ?

Because at this point Cam refuses to take a) a cheap deal b) be a backup or c) both.  Right now his option is 'c' and it's not an option, it's all he's going to get.  Until he accepts that fact the 'c' is the only choice, then he will remained unsigned.

This is a rare predicament no team is in dire need of a quarterback as of right now

That's debateable. There are definitely a few teams around the league that SHOULD be searching for a new QB.

I suspect at least one or two will eventually sign one of the remaining free agents.

Which ones? I don’t really see any teams right now that are in a position where a vet stopgap makes any sense. For many of them, they’d be better off just rebuilding and tanking or pseudo-tanking for next year’s class.

New England, Denver, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, Washington are the ones I believe SHOULD be looking. New England for extremely obvious reasons; Denver because Drew Lock is a guy that Elway likes, so he is all but assured to be a failure; Jacksonville because I don't know how much I would put faith in Gardner Minshew; Pittsburgh because of Big Ben's elbow surgery and my general tepid outlook on Mason Rudolph; Washington because both their QB's suck.

Now, quite obviously at least 3 of those teams disagree with my point of view.

NE - I agree they don’t have a starting QB on their roster, but I don’t think it makes a ton of sense for them to go after one of these veterans. Better to handpick a young guy if Stidham doesn’t work out.

Denver - come on, Lock looked really good last year at times and never looked out of place in an NFL game and had a great record in his starts.

Jacksonville - This is an interesting one, Foles didn’t work out for them and I don’t think a different veteran stopgap like that would be any different. And while Minshew slowed down quite a bit later in the year he flashed legitimate starting potential. I think it’s smart to ride with him for now and if he falls on his face this year you have the draft next year.

Pittsburgh - I agree but this would be as clear backup to Ben for now. I actually think this is Cam’s best landing spot. He could keep healing up for a bit and would fit in perfectly in that offense.

Washington - dumpster fire that needs a young franchise QB to save them and very well might get one early next year. Cam or any other FA QB this year wouldn’t have done anything for them except bring them to 7-9 to 9-7 purgatory for a few years. Might as well see what they have in Haskins as he was a 1st rounder last year (albeit a different regime) and when he likely sucks, draft a legit stud next year.

I don't think Belichick is going to subscribe to the "lose to get better" theory. It goes pretty counter to everything they do. I suspect they will sign a veteran.

I am going to stand by my assertion that John Elway is the worst judge of QB talent the NFL has ever seen. There was a time that people thought Brock Osweiler was good, as well.

I'd have a real backup plan if Minshew falters. Currently they don't.

I would be very, very concerned about Ben's future after that surgery. To me this is an obvious place for a vet. QB. But, they seem to think highly of Mason Rudolph.

I say Washington because it is unlikely that Haskins is the answer and we all know Allen isn't. But, it is rare for a team to give up after one season, so I don't think you will see a QB brought in that can legitimately threaten Haskins.

Be honest, though. Would you rather have Teddy Bridgewater on a 3 year, $63 million($33 million guaranteed) with an easy out after the second year or Andy Dalton on a 1 year, $3 mil(up to $7 with incentives) deal?

And, yes, I realize that negotiating with Dalton as a starter would have elevated his price. Still.......the prices of Winston and Dalton would be pretty tempting.

Teddy was the guy the wanted and that's what it took to get him.  None of us know what the market was for Bridgewater

    • I mean, I hear what y'all are saying, but Derrick could have been positive without being negative.  He essentially accused people of not seeing Bryce's improvement because of their desire to not be wrong. He could've kept it about Bryce and the team. For example, he could've said: "Bryce has made strides, and we believe in him. This coming season, his continued improvement will turn a lot of people into believers."  That would've been supportive of his teammate and sent a message to the doubters. That being said, his tact almost summoned and left the door ajar for more skepticism. That's my take anyway. Bryce has improved from the bottom to perhaps skirting the line between the bottom third and mid-third at best...after three seasons. We've all seen it. Yay! In my mind, Bryce has still got a long way to go and a short time to get there, but my expectations are top five--at least top 10--always! Yes, I am a fan, so there's that, but I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect excellence. Hopefully the Panthers FO has the same mindset (and that doesn't even necessarily have anything to do with what we gave up to acquire him). That is the lens I'm looking through. Derrick Brown has his homer glasses on. He just needs to be more diplomatic and thoughtful with his words in my opinion, but I get it that he's a good teammate.
    • I have no doubt the Canes will come out like gangbusters, huge bounce back from game one - my only concern is Freddie, if he lets in a couple of softies and Dobes stays hot we could be in trouble.
