Rhule says team's biggest defensive problem is missed tackles, but he was "fired up" at how hard the team played.

Rhule says team had 22 pressures this week by way Panthers count it -- 11 being their magic number. They had 5 each of first two weeks.

Panthers coach Matt Rhule has put his first NFL win behind him, saying on Monday “the fun’s over.’’ What’s next? “The biggest key for this franchise is we are as critical in a win as we were in a loss,’’

Matt Rhule on all the missed tackles and yards allowed after contact through the Panthers’ first three games: “It’s the biggest issue we have right now. It’s been three weeks of [bad] angles.

Wouldn't have guessed this: It was new CB Rasul Douglas who suggested the critical team meeting last week for Panthers. Said team needed to get to know each other better.

Rhule says asst special teams coach Ed Foley masterminded the postgame "Sweet Caroline" singalong, which will become a tradition after wins. Foley used to do it for Rhule at Baylor and Temple, too, but the song was "High Hopes" then.

Rhule says he has never addressed the idea of a "rebuild" with the team but that he wants to win now. "I've never used the word 'rebuild, I just say we've gotta build," he said.

On offense, Rhule says key to the game was Trent Scott (61 pct of snaps) and Greg Little (39 pct) manning LT in place of Okung was "the key to the game."

"I think Marty nailed the draft last year," Rhule said, specifically pointing out Derrick Brown for a fine game yesterday.

Rhule says from the numbers he got, the #Panthers had two sacks and 22 pressures. Thought pressure was the reason why they had a chance to win. Adds that it’ll be an even tougher task this week with Kyler Murray on the Cardinals because he’s so elusive.

Matt Rhule mentioned that Shaq Thompson was dealing with a little bit of a neck injury, and Donte Jackson's had a toe injury. He was unclear on the severity of those injuries.

CB Donte Jackson (foot) and LB Shaq Thompson (neck) are seeing doctors today; not much update on either of their injuries yet for Panthers.

Matt Rhule says he and his staff have complete confidence in what they are doing because they saw it work at Baylor and Temple. Seeing the players start to realize that with Sunday's win has been rewarding.

Most outsiders just look at wins and losses to judge a team.  I was impressed by how well coached this team is already and you can tell there are standards being set and accounted for across the board.  Future is bright with coach Rhule, we just need to nail down the franchise QB questions for the next decade.

Honestly, for me the growth of the asst coaching through this season will be as vital as the players. At this point we know who some of these guys are (Boston and Shaq), but the change in game time situational football has been refreshing. I am extremely optimistic for both of the coordinators to really flourish. It would be really nice to continue to not see improvement, but the adaptability to game plan for each week as if it were the only game so that when the talent is there the team will far exceed expectations. I am done wanting playoffs, I want them to not be in a SB, but finally win the thing.

And this is why I want to see us win rather than lose. Seeing close losses turn into a close win as early as week 3 helps build a culture. Players are more likely to believe in the coaching staff and buy into their game plans when they’re winning. What do you think Falcons players are thinking the next time they jump out to a lead? Culture is very important.

Coaches and their messages can get stale REALLY quick if you’re not winning. Getting  Lawrence would be nice but at what cost in terms of the bigger picture? Tepper brought Rhule here because he’s supposed to be this master program builder. Rhule says Snow is a great teacher/coach. What would that say about our future if we were bad enough to be picking 1st? At that point it might not matter who we have at QB. We would go right back to the situation we were just in with having our QB being the reason our HC still had his job.

Back in 2010 I was rooting for losses. We knew Jimmy wasn’t the answer and that we were getting a new coach anyways. That made sense. This is a different situation where it’s important to build a culture starting day 1.

With so many question marks leading into the season and the boom or bust potential of Rhule, these first 3 weeks have been pretty damn promising in terms of the future ahead

Wait, the key to the game on Offense was Scott and Little? Like that was our biggest obsticle? I wonder how much of those two we will see the rest of this year.

I think our coaching staff just proved they are not bad. The Chargers had some garbage coaching yesterday. In his 4th year and his team looked like no one knew how to deal with clock management or what spiking the football is.

Probably a little more than we want to see of them so it was a good move on Rhule’s part to try and boost their confidence with a compliment during his presser.

Here is where I see what he is doing.  He would love for Little or Scott to step up at LT--he knows that if a LT emerges from this competition, that is huge.  Demoralizing Little in a presser would be counterproductive--directly related to his morale, self-esteem, and work ethic.  Rhule was an educator---he knows what he is doing.  This is a parent conference strategy--give them something positive to cling to--has everything to do with healthy child development.  So if Little feels that he contributed to a win, and word goes out that he did, he works harder this week in practice.  I think it is brilliant, personally.

I get the coachspeak, it just came off as working against itself to me. There are 13 more games to see if this strategy bears any fruit. I'm not convinced either is an motivation issue in regards to their play.

    • I've really only begun to pay attention this week being that training camp is looming, so I was personally caught off guard by the fact that Nic Scourton remains unsigned. That's not necessarily bad news, but it's not necessarily good news either. Apparently it's a thing with this year's draft class. "Of the 32 players selected in the second-round, 30 remained unsigned and the clock is ticking. "Already we've seen one second-round pick hold out from the start of training camp with that player being Los Angeles Chargers' wide receiver Tre Harris. Harris did not report with the rest of the Chargers' rookies on Saturday due to his contract situation, a issue that could impact nearly every other team in the league. "For the Panthers, defensive end Nic Scourton is the player to watch for when rookies start showing back up to the team facilities next week. "The 51st overall pick is one of the 30 second-rounders who has yet to sign their rookie contract and the reason why is due to the other two that have actually signed. "Cleveland Browns' linebacker Carson Schwesinger and Houston Texans' wide receiver Jayden Higgins each signed fully guaranteed contracts as the first and second players drafted in the second-round. Prior to this year, second-round picks never received a fully guaranteed deal, only players selected in the first-round." https://atozsports.com/nfl/carolina-panthers-news/panthers-nic-scourton-contract-second-round-pick-training-camp-hold-out-tre-harris/ So, I suppose we'll see what's what pretty soon. It's definitely something to monitor.
    • overwhelming majority of kids in travel ball aren't getting scholarships though because most teams are rec caliber (and not watched by scouts)    and parents/leagues sort of helped create this system and narrative IMO where travel ball is now oversaturated and most of it is simply expensive rec ball.  is travel beneficial for some athletes to get more exposure? Sure. The ones travel actually existed for.   I still think travel has expanded entirely too broad at this stage......where they will now have 5 teams per year in your backyard area pending they can get parents to write those checks.   Ain't no scout ever laying eyes on 90%+ of the kids in travel ball at this stage of where it has morphed into.
    • Im really curious to see how the defense is going to look once its playing with some leads.
