Trade Curtis Samuel

He'll be buried on the depth chart once CMC returns

He's in the final year of his deal and is not a priority moving forward

Panthers need picks/players right now just to make it through the season

He'll probably never be more valuable

He’s our #3 receiver regardless of whether CMC is playing or not, so I don’t think he’ll get “buried on the depth chart” unless you think we’re gonna keep Davis at RB and put CMC in the slot or something. Maybe he’ll lose the majority of those plays where they plug him in at RB.

Also, what’s the logic behind trading current assets for future draft picks in order to make it through this season? Obviously I understand the argument for it in the long run, but that will objectively make the current team worse for the duration of the season.

We have to have a third playmaker for this offense to work efficiently. Trade or not, walk or not, I don't think this offense efficiently works without the third wheel.

Well we have CMC, DJ and Robby still unless you are specifically talking WR/TE. My idea if we were able to trade him for a 3rd(long shot) is to then use that 3rd to draft his replacement.

If a 4th or 5th is the best we can do then keep him and hope we can re-sign him to a somewhat reasonable contract. If not then you let him go and accept the comp pick.

One thing to factor in whether you re-sign him is do we also want to keep Robby beyond next year when his contract ends. I think most everyone is in agreement that we need to keep DJ and keeping DJ is going to cost at least $15M/year to extend him which likely happens after next year. Robby is getting $10M already and would figure to get more than that on his next contract given he is exceeding expectations thus far. I don’t think it’s a good idea to be paying 3 WRs big money. DJ over $15M, Robby over $10M and Curtis around $10M is way too much money to commit to the position and would limit our ability to pay other positions like OL so I think we have to choose between Robby and Curtis and draft a 3rd WR either this year or next year.

Curtis is such a valuable asset as there aren't many players like him. He plays bigger then he is and has great hands. Also if you watch his scoring video you will see how well he high points the ball wich is really needed in the red zone. He's a 3rd down play maker too and we already have plenty of issues on 3rd down.

I do agree with you but I was hoping Curtis would go for 6m to 8m Dj for 10m to 12m and Robbys gonna demand 15m next contract if he continues the way he's playing. Still alot to the WR group, it also depends on our draft success. If we get young players say on the oline who are good and we don't have to pay for 4 years then we could afford it.

I'd trade him for a legitimate young guard.

Well ya... but who is giving us a legit young guard for a rental?

I’d talk to Denver. They need weapons for Lock. They declined Garrett Bolles option already and he’s been having a great year. Maybe a rental for a rental.

Pay Bolles and Moton this offseason and draft Wyatt Davis in the 1st

I also feel like you can get good guards in the 3rd and 4th rounds and a good center in the 2nd. If we draft as well as we did last year then we can afford to pay Curtis.

Trading young players in a rebuild seems pretty counterintuitive.  Why would he not be part of the future plans?  I doubt any team would give us any significant value for him either.

I know madden isn’t real life, but there is a strategy I used on it for players like him.

Unless he was some ungodly generational talent (OVR 95+ for the next 5-7 years) I would trade him for the highest picks that I could before his rookie deal was over.

These picks always allowed me to easily replace and usually upgrade his roster spot, plus add two starters at positions of need.

Once he was traded, working out a new contract and overpaying him was someone else’s problem. Now i had his replacement and upgrade, plus two new likely starters at the fraction of the price I would spend signing him to a 3-4 year deal.

I would think that Anderson would want money in the same neighborhood as Moore, and he is justified in wanting that. I think that his market will command that if he continues to play as he has been. I could argue that Moore needs Anderson more than Anderson needs Moore, and Samuel could likely fill in for both in a pinch. That being said, are we sure we don't want to invest up to 40 mil for the trio? I am still hopeful that Omar Bayless can take some pressure off and give the FO more than just symbolic leverage, but we won't know that until next season. In any event, we're going to have some decisions to make for sure!

It’s possible that Curtis ends up in the $6-8M range but looking at the top WR contracts given out in the past couple years that there is no way DJ is going for $10-12M. The best are getting $20M right now. DJ is a notch below that but he’s an ascending player. $15M is his floor unless he falls off a cliff.

The Patriots might give us Thuney for Samuel. Belichick has no qualms making trades, the Pats WRs are awful and Cam knows him.

The issue there is that Thuney’s contract is also ending after this year and will command top of the market money so it’s a rental for a rental because the Pats likely won’t re-sign him.
