Halfway through the season, what were you most wrong about?

I came into the season with no expectations at all. At one point I questioned if we were even going to have a season, so I’m just grateful we have a team who competes and outplays who they are on paper, especially the D.

Biggest surprise for me is how good Rasul Douglas has been. From the moment he stepped on the field, with virtually no time to learn the playbook his play has been outstanding.

I thought Burns was too small to be an every down Defensive end

I thought we had some good young prospects & would suffer from their mistakes,

but it is the veterans that are making most of the mistakes.

I didn't think the Offensive line could possibly be this bad

Rasul Douglas and Eli Apple. Rasul looks legit somehow. I was hopeful that Apple would be hungry to disprove the doubters... guess not.

I had hope for Douglas after my Eagles buddy told me he thought Douglas could be a lot better than he'd been able to show in Philly. Apple? Yeah, just a waste of talent. Was worth a shot though.

Everyone who thought Burns was a bust clearly didn't watch him last year when Rivera didn't have him playing fuging gunner, the guy's bend, speed and balance is incredible

I don't think anyone was concerned with the talent, I think some were just concerned with him being able to hold up in the run game and potential durability issues.

My expectations were very low this season, I had us around 3-4 wins. I think we can sneak in maybe 6-7 total now if we keep playing hard. This team hasn't been blown out of the water by anyone yet... Which is my biggest surprise.

Teddy is exactly what I expected him to be. Brown, YGM and Chinn look to be major factors going forward as expected.

Mike Davis I wanted to cut in preseason to save that 3mil... He has proved me dead wrong. Samuel is finally coming around as a player, I was ready to call bust after last year... I'll chalk that up to incompetence from the previous staff.

Offense: I thought DJ Moore could make some more progress in a better offense with a better QB throwing him the ball. Instead he's leveled off and is producing at almost exactly the same pace as last year, yardage-wise.

Defense: I thought we'd straight up be the worst group in the NFL. The run defense was worst in the league last year and we lost Luke. The coverage group had maybe the least talent of any starting group. Lost a bunch of pass rushers. But here we are, somehow around the middle of the pack.

I had no real expectations from this team coming in, but as for random thoughts that went wide:

  • Like everybody, I expected the defense to be a lot worse.  They have put up more resistance than a trailer park does to a tornado, which was what I was prepared for.
  • So far, Ian Thomas has disappointed me.  I thought his irrelevance was due to the previous coaching staff noticing he was not the oldest TE on the roster, and thus should not have a role.
  • Our WRs are better than I expected.  I was hoping to see improvement, but they are a good group.  Samuel and Anderson are the main reasons.  They have shown more than I expected.  That’s not a dig at DJ, I was just thinking he might have been more or less alone out there.
  • Burns has turned rapidly into a big-name DE.  I expected him to show enough to be trade bait to a 3-4 team and our experiment a failure.  I would not have been surprised to see his development AFTER we traded him.  His development may be the biggest surprise.
  • Somehow, our OL is worse than what I was thinking.  I am scratching my head at how that is possible.  They would have to improve to reach trailer park in a tornado level of resistance.
  • Same for our LBs, who I had higher hopes for than the OL.  They are rarely noticeable during games.  I didn’t expect greatness, but I did expect them to be more effective than a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest.
  • Chinn has stepped up faster than I thought possible.  In fact, the draft class as a whole has come along faster than I had imagined they would, especially with no real training camp or preseason to speak of.  As a group, they are about at the point now where I was hoping they would get to by the end of the season.
  • I had no idea what to expect from Rhule.  I would classify him as a pleasant surprise thus far.  Snow has surprised me in a positive way, Brady has not lived up to the hype yet.

Before the season, if you had offered me 3-5 at the midway point, I would have jumped on it.  I really did not see myself getting as invested in the win/loss outcome of a game as I did this past Thursday.  Nor did I expect to see this team above .500, other than maybe 1-0, at any point in the season.

Nor did I expect them to be one or two plays in every game away from perhaps changing the Ls into Ws.  That was something I had hoped to see by the last few weeks of the season, but didn’t expect.  Scrappiness is something we have not often seen from this team in the past.  From individual players, yes, but the team as a whole, not so much.
