Draft Position Watch (Week 9 edition)

Recommended Posts

Panthers are currently in line for the 12th pick of the NFL draft. Their SOS continues to rise (.546) which is a bad thing. Here are the top games this week that can help improve the Panthers draft position. The following assumes the Panthers will lose to the Chiefs this week.

1)      Lions @ Vikings: A Vikings win gives them 3 wins, tied with the Panthers. The Panthers, who have played one more game, will have a worse win percentage and move ahead of the Vikings in the draft order. This game has a net 0 effect on our SOS as we will play both teams. We would maintain out lead against the Lions as we would have one more loss than they do.

2)      Patriots @ Jets: A Patriots win gives them 3 wins, tied with the Panthers. The Panthers, who have played one more game, will have a worse win percentage and move ahead of the Patriots in the draft order. This game has a net 0 effect on our SOS as we do not play either team.

3)      Chargers @ Raiders: A Chargers win gives them 3 wins, tied with the Panthers. The Panthers, who have played one more game. will have a worse win percentage and move ahead of the Chargers in the draft order. This game has a net 0 effect on our SOS because we have played both teams.

4)      Cowboys @ Steelers: A Cowboys win gives them 3 wins, but they remain ahead of the Panthers due to lower SOS. This game has no effect on our SOS.

5)      Falcons @ Broncos: A Falcons win gives them 3 wins, and tied with the Panthers in win percentage. This would move the Panthers ahead of the Falcons as they have a higher SOS.  Sadly this win would also increase our SOS, as we play the Falcons twice and the broncos once. The Broncos would move to 3 wins and be tied with Panthers, but the Panthers have a lower SOS.

6)      Titans @ Bears: A Bears loss would lower our SOS.

7)      Giants @ Washington. A Giants win would move both the Giants and Washington to 2 wins each. However, a Washington loss would lower of SOS.

Updated results before MNF.

1. Jets  0-8 (.585)

2. Jaguars 1-7 (.554)

3. Dallas 2-7 (.473)

4. Giants 2-7 (.511)

5. Washington 2-6 (.466)

6. Chargers 2-6 (.508)

7. Houston 2-6 (.562)

8. Patriots 2-5 (.530)

9. Bengals 2-5-1 (.527)

10. Panthers. 3-6 (.538)

When the Patriots win tonight, they will drop to 14th. (They will have the same record as the Lions, Vikings, and Broncos 3-5, and their SOS will put them between the Vikings and Broncos.) This would move the Panthers up to 9th.

If the Patriots lose tonight, they will move up to 7th, with the same record as Washington, Chargers and Texans, but their SOS will put them between the Chargers and Texans. This would not affect the Panthers current position.

Regardless of the outcome, the Panthers will either remain with the 10th pick or move up to 9th

Looking at the other teams besides the Jets , if we actually managed to lose out we'd have a decent shot at a top 5 pick

Unfortunately, two of the teams with higher SOS are at the top. Reminds me of the Burns draft where we lost all the tiebreakers and NO giving us the last game dropped us so many pics. While we still got lucky that Atlanta, Washington and New York suck at drafting and got Burns, it cost us pick 77 since Marty wouldn’t have had to spaz trade up for Little. He could have just wasted only pick 40 on Little instead of two picks.

    • I wonder if they'd consider trading Rasheed Walker to a team that needs tackle help but missed out in the draft?
    • LOL. This is such a Panthers fan take.  Anyone who falls to us must suck because some other team didn't take them before.  We got lucky with Lemon, Thieneman, and Freeling all falling to us (honestly any of the three is a A+) but the WR and S positions are much deeper than the LT position in this draft.  We got the LT w/ the most upside at 19.  Mauigoa played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the nfl.  Spano played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the NFL due to short arms.  Blake Miller played RT in college and is not as good as Freeling.  Proctor is a true LT but his ability to handle quick edge's worries me (see Icky).  Freeling is a true LT and a gifted pass protector.  Many think he has a very high ceiling and will benefit from not having to start right away.  This is how you build a franchise.
    • After watching Cam get killed for years behind a bad Oline and having to watch the 2021 and 2023 Olines I will never complain about this team putting resources into that spot.  We got a true LT who could really push Rasheed Walker for the day 1 job. Go back and watch Iceky's draft profile from 2022 and all the talk was Ickey would be an all-pro guard in a zone blocking scheme, but he could play LT in a gap power run scheme. That's why Ickey looked really good when Wilks took over and we just started running gap run plays and just mauled people up front but under Canales we've been more of a zone running team. Ickey can survive at LT with his pass blocking but his true strength will always be his ability to just move guys in the run game and that's a skill set that's better used at guard.  Take another OT later on day 3 to learn from Moton to take over RT in a couple of years and let Walker and Freeling battle it out for the day 1 LT job then next offseason trade one of Hunt of Lewis and let Ickey move inside to guard.
