The Athletic: Dane Brugler Mock Draft 1.0

1. New York Jets: Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson

2. Jacksonville Jaguars: Zach Wilson, QB, BYU*
The first curveball of this mock draft. In October, I wrote how Wilson had put himself in the conversation to be the second quarterback drafted and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him selected this high. With his natural accuracy and ability to execute off-platform, Wilson’s play translates very well to the next level.

3. Cincinnati Bengals: Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon

4. Dallas Cowboys: Caleb Farley, CB, Virginia Tech

5. Los Angeles Chargers: Patrick Surtain, CB, Alabama*

6. Carolina Panthers: Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State*
Teddy Bridgewater is a tough, talented quarterback, but I don’t think anybody expects him to be the long-term answer for Carolina. However, he does give the organization an ideal “bridge” scenario if it drafts a quarterback in the top 10. Fields still requires development with his passing vision and reads, but his size, mobility and accuracy are attractive selling points.

Other Notes:

- Trey Lance goes to the WTF at #8.
- New England gets Kyle Pitts
- Several offensive linemen go in the first
- Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is taken by the Saints

We have played one more game than most. Lots of 4-7 teams with worse SOS. We are technically 6th but on a bye so we’ll likely drop a couple or a few spots.

That said, I’d be thrilled to get Fields around there.

We need the Saints to start losing otherwise what is to stop them from resting their starters and giving us an easy win?

I think as the season moves along more fans are starting to come on board with the idea that we need to move on from Teddy. The guy who made this draft obviously just mixed up the draft to draw in attention. I doubt he really sees Fields falling that far, but you have to change your draft otherwise people stop paying attention to the same picks in the same spots.

I'm starting to like Wilson better than Fields, but there's something bugging me about him.

Some of the talk about Wilson is that while he has the right skill set, they're not sure how well he'll physically hold up in the NFL

That's basically the same read people had on Bridgewater when he was up for the Draft.

That...scares me.

I think it’s like people saying they preferred Lance or Fields over Lawrence. Sometimes the known entities get questioned because they’ve been there so long that everyone has seen the LSU game (and maybe only that) and the unknowns get that shiny new toy feel.

Lawrence and Fields were the top rated players (all positions) when they came out and it’s hard to say they’ve done anything to dispute that.

Man, after watching the Tedster go 3-8, it sucks that we didn’t Grier our way to a draft slot that was close enough to entertain a trade up for Lawrence. I know it won’t happen, but lord almighty it would be fun to see Trevor throwing to Moore, Anderson, Samuel and CMC. I still don’t understand they I’d rather go 5-11 as if starting Grier and hoping for 2-14 to get a potential stud is bad.

Why can’t we hope to get a Peyton or Mahomes or Brady or Rodgers? Wouldn’t that be nice? Great QB year and I can imagine squandering it for a attah boy we are 6-10 and no one thought we could do that. Just imagine Teddy still being the starter in 2022.

Dream scenario. Well, actually the dream scenario is actually exactly this but Trevor refuses to play for Jets so they trade him to us for Fields +++. Don't see us getting anywhere near Fields or Trevor though. Lance/Wilson are the best bets IF we go QB (we should, but I'm not convinced we will quite yet).

      I'm probably one of those posters, but I make those posts because there are too many things going on that don't make sense. For instance, how does a RB that does something that hasn't been done in 14 years immediately get reverted back to 2nd string, and it takes a leadership council to make him the starter when he's averaging 3x the YPC? Your average fan shouldn't be screaming that for 2 weeks before the coach sees it. And that's one of many.  What you're seeing is frustration that we could be better, that we should be better, if our owner, FO, and coaches could do things that are so painfully obvious to even the most basic fan

      I think we're all struggling with what things are right now and what they have been. It's like getting ready to have bandages removed after a long period of injury. The healing, the new growth, they aren't going to be pretty, there's going to be some ongoing issues for a while at best and there's every chance that we're going to have to go back into the bandage situation all over again. And that sucks. But it's also a place where maybe, just maybe, the recovery is going to finally start happening. The bad days will be getting behind us.  It's not going to happen this year, but I believe from what I see that this year is showing that improvement. We focus on the QB because that's what all the pundits focus on, because it's the flashiest and most heralded position on the field. No one wants to put out a tweet about how a center is holding down their job and anchoring a line. They rarely celebrate that blocking tight end or special teams gunner. That fourth CB on the depth chart? Not a mention. And yet, those guys are the kind that we've been building here, we're building the lunch pail guys AND finding some future stars.  Is Bryce one of them? Might be a cornerstone of the team in the future as the second QB, might somehow just show out to end the season. Might flame out like many expect. But if that uncertainty is all we concentrate on, we're just going to miserably look at this team and maybe miss out on some solid green shoots that are finally beginning to poke through into the sunlight.
