At 9, The Carolina Panthers Will Select

I have heard this team has always had some great LB players. And few if any great QBs.

How many super bowl wins? Or even playoff runs.

Two finals. One when Cam was unstoppable and one were Delhomme had his short run as a top qb.

Tells you all you need to know about position value.

I love Luke but give me Russell Wilson in that draft everyday. I know we weren't in need of a QB then but we are now and that's the point.

Yep. BPA is important but you have to factor in positional value too.

I have no doubt this is how Tepper and Rhule are approaching it.

Nice post.  Exactly.  If only New England had drafted a LB when they took Brady 20 years ago.  Seriously--Parsons is a good pick if your Qb position is settled.

I understand needing a QB, but you cant just reach for a QB cause you need one. Lance is a project QB who should be picked late first early second round, he would be a serious reach at 9.

You can’t ‘reach’ when it comes to a QB. Their positional value is just that high.

You can make a bad pick, but you can’t reach.

Ask yourself, was the Mahomes pick a reach? They had a serviceable QB at the time. Mahomes wasn’t rated all that high.

The impact an Elite QB has means you get one at all costs.

I hear you, but I am not sure reaching is the term to use at this time in this situation.  We are in position to draft a QB in the best QB draft in some time---I think you dont have a real choice---

Your options:  Sign another free agent, make a trade for a big contract, or roll the dice on a kid with the skills you need and hope to fit into your system.

Or stay with Bridgewater and build everyone else.

I see your point, but I am not sure that Parsons will do more for his team than Lance.  He might be a better player at his position, but will he make the impact?  I think you take the QB if you think he fits your system and will make you better.  If we took Trask or Jones at 9, I would probably call that a reach.

The new GM has a tough call.

He was the second QB taken in the draft.  If Fields is available at 9 I will be all for it

We saw this year what bad MLB play does for your team.  How many games did we lose by 1 score? Being able to stop just one more drive a game could have meant playoffs.

    • You're right. And he's been on the upswing, something that's been a long time coming. And over the last few years, we woulda been better with a Trent Dilfer out there considering everything.  But right now, we got a W following a W the week before. It has been a while since we've been there. And we're at .500. I know that's only a C grade right now, but man, after so many F grades in a row... it's kinda refreshing to be here. Is Bryce a long term answer here? He's still got a long way to go. Could he do it? Those three touchdown passes he made were bang on, high performance throws. And they finally game planned him pushing the ball down field. It was against a weak Dallas defense, but at least they were running a game based on attacking weaknesses of the defense rather than covering the weaknesses of our own team. Maybe both Canales and Young are maturing before our eyes.
    • No, he got beat at home by Michigan this year.  The other five wins are against Big Ten and Non-Power bottom feeders.  He's 0-7 vs ranked teams, and each year Nebraska has started strong and then faded in conference play.  Nebraska is 1-7 in two Novembers under Rhule.  This year their November slate is USC, @UCLA, @Penn State and Iowa.  Very possible they lose all of those games.  His tenure at Nebraska is looking very Baylor-esque.  And somehow he's still a front runner for the Penn State job.  Which would be ironic since they just ran a very Matt Rhule like (as far as can't beat any good teams) James Franklin out of town.
    • GWDs vs... HOU: 15 - 13, no turnovers ATL: 9 - 7, no turnovers NO: 23 - 22, 1 interception NYG: 20 - 17, no turnovers ARI: 36 - 30, no turnovers @ATL: 44 - 38, no turnovers MIA: 27 - 24, 1 interception + 1 fumble DAL: 30 - 27, 1 interception (that was clearly TMac's fault) Which one of those games was Bryce clearly the reason that the team was behind aside from Miami?
