That looks right, I haven’t checked the actual numbers, but I do recall him talking about valuing them and them being a part of the equation, which when compared with Hurney, these numbers seem to support. I also recall at least a few times where DG a specifically targeted players that were released or that wouldn’t count towards the formula to preserve the ones we did get. DG had his faults, including as the other poster said trading away draft picks, but I don’t think that he didn’t value comp picks at least to some degree. Would be interesting to look at the average number of comp picks for each team from 2014 to 2018 to compare. I think DG would be around average, with teams like NE, BAL, PIT, GB, etc. crushing it at the top. Hopefully we can become a team in that group with Fitt and Rhule.

People like to devalue comp picks, because for the most part, they are later round picks that do have small chances of working out but if you have neough of them overtime you should hit on some.

Alsom some teams like to use them as currency for other things, either trading up in the draft or some teams will them to trade for vet players on cheap contracts.

He definitely played the comp pic game one year, but some teams such as the Ravens, Pats, and Packers play it almost every year.  That is my idea of focusing on it.

Love how they can be traded now. We can use both of them to move up and grab a player we really like.

Tom Brady was a 6th round compensatory pick. Nuff said.

They're nice, but they shouldn't impede the business at hand! Just something else to consider among need-based calculations.

I don’t know if Gettleman was for or against them but I do know he valued the 3rd for Norman. We got a 3rd for Norwell as well. Hurney is the only one who has thrown away a 3rd so far. A 5th to 7th, maybe you risk losing it but 3rds are almost always protected by the team who has them. NO certainly didn’t sign a big FA to cancel out Teddy’s 3rd. They’d rather sign their own star FAs and get a good comp pick than blowing money on guys we dump a year or two later.

Seattle is in the upper half of the league as far as comp picks historically so Fitt comes from an organization that takes these in consideration. Panthers are in the bottom half of comp picks received.

Sea: 30 comp picks total

Again, If we get two extra picks, I'm happy.  I get a DL that otherwise I wouldn't have drafted and either a very late OG or TE, neither of which will likely make the team anyways.

They aren’t just “nice” for a team that’s 17-31 the last three years and had a chance to get 4 good to decent ones, it shouldn’t just be considered nice. We have so many spots to improve including a huge amount of depth needed, 4 extra picks could have been huge. We didn’t spend on FAs like we were rebuilding and we should have.

I don't even expect that kind of fortune.  There is nothing wrong with a pick like CAP or David Mayo.  Decent backups on cheap, cost controlled contracts.  Every pick doesn't have to be a star, the draft can be a cheap way to fill out your roster.

Speaking of the Pats, they will often use late round pics to secure free agents before they are released by other teams.

The Tom Brady 6th round exception should get a thread locked.  I'm just kidding, but you can only use an EXTREME OUTLIER as a base for an argument for so long.
