Lack of good quarterbacks or lack of good quarterback development? 🤔

I've seen that question posed a couple of times. It's a valid one.

The league's derth of quality starting QB's can actually be largely attributed to that time period. Fast forward to the past 4-5 drafts and it appears on the surface that the future of the NFL QB's have been recently.

I think several factors probably contribute to that.

Cam and Luck are HoFers if they don't get so badly injured and ruined by their organization so yea i'd still be drafting both of them and also a first round QB in any draft where I need a QB.

Cam might still be a HoFer if we didn't have poo Shula in our SB and won it. Luke will be for example on a short career b/c he was the best MLB during his time period and the media is surprisingly on his side and he'll get in.

College systems factor in too.

I remember reading an article some years back from an analyst who said that colleges moving to more one read systems and favoring running quarterbacks was going to contribute to a severe shortage of great quarterbacks in the NFL.

I don't remember when that was, but if it was written sometime between the late 2000s and the early 2010s, that guy now looks like a genius.

I think there is a lot more crossover between the college and pro gameplans than there was in the 2000's.

Been a lot of talk about this group lately so I thought I'd check out the list.

Be warned, looking at this list might make your eyes bleed (I disclaim all responsibility since you've been warned)

...

2009

#1 - Matt Stafford, Georgia, Lions
#5 - Mark Sanchez, USC, Jets
#17 - Josh Freeman, Kansas State, Buccaneers

(I really thought Freeman was gonna be great)

2010

#1 - Sam Bradford, Oklahoma, Rams
#25 - Tim Teebow, Florida, Broncos

(had completely forgotten about #25 there)

2011

#1 - Cam Newton, Auburn, Panthers
#8 - Jake Locker, Washington, Titans
#10 - Blaine Gabbert, Missouri, Jaguars
#12 - Christian Ponder, Florida State, Vikings

(forgot Ponder too, but I'd be willing to bet a lot of people have)

2012

#1 - Andrew Luck, Stanford, Colts
#2 - Robert Griffin III, Baylor, Redskins
#8 - Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M, Dolphins
#22 - Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State, Browns

(spending a first round pick on Brandon Weeden... yikes)

2013

#16 - EJ Manuel, Florida State, Bills

(look at it this way, there weren't as many busts that year)

2014

#3 - Blake Bortles, Central Florida, Jaguars
#22 - Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M, Browns
#32 - Teddy Bridgewater, Louisville, Vikings

(that #32 pick...yeah)

2015

#1 - Jameis Winston, Florida State, Buccaneers
#2 - Marcus Mariota, Oregon, Titans

(Winston is a free agent but the Saints want him back; speculation the Raiders might trade Mariota)

2016

#1 - Jared Goff, California, Rams
#2 - Carson Wentz, North Dakota State, Eagles
#26 - Paxton Lynch, Memphis, Broncos

(is Lynch still in the league? I'm thinking no)

...

Oy 😳

Sooo...who's up for drafting a quarterback with our top ten pick? 😕

You can’t draw a conclusion from that list without also listing the QBs drafted after the 1st.

As bad as those odds look the later rounds are even worse, not to mention you left out 2017 and later.

Fact is good QBs are hard to find but they are exponentially easier to find in the first round.

The more I think about it....we are not moving up to draft a QB...if one falls then so be it...doesn't make sense at this point..based on analytics.  WATSON or run it back with Teddy Bear!  Build the team and see what QBs are available in 2022..
