I mean, if you're looking at the position being picked relative to the timing of the pick in a team's rebuild then I guess I see where you're coming..maybe.  But if you come across the QB you want, you take him and don't talk yourself out of it because of a predetermined order of things in respect to acquiring players at certain positions.

I actually don't think we'll pick one but you get what I'm saying right?

I mean, if we absolutely love Lance and he's there, I can certainly see us pulling the trigger...I just have a hunch we won't.

In that scenario, we are likely hoping that someone else loves him and makes us a sweetheart deal.

I don't want us to draft a quarterback, but I actually agree regarding the notion that Fields is sliding.

He was 1a with Lawrence forever. Granted, he had a couple of bad performances in big games and might be a tad inconsistent, but it's also true that nobody is a finished product right now.

Hell, Lawrence had some lackluster performances too.

The bad performances came during covid poo with teammates not being able to play.

it is eerily similar to what happened to deshaun in 2017 as far as questions and concerns. Something that hasn’t been applied to the other qbs.

I love Lance but I’m not naive to think we should draft him over players like Sewell. But if fields is there man I would be sprinting to the podium. It’s also such a great situation for him to come to. No pressure. Just compete and grow.

That's a bigger discussion than this topic, honestly.

Common saying for the draft is "BPA, except quarterback", but practically speaking, need always factors in there.

It's just a matter of how much.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. People are really overhyping Fields.

I think it has to do with him being hyped since his junior year of HS.  He's been groomed as an NFL QB even moreso than Lawrence.  Doesn't mean he pans out, but explains the hype.

I mean, people were talking Fields/Lawrence in 2019.  It finally culminates this week.  Been a long time coming.

Since we've brought up the topic, what is it that's primarily bringing him down?

Is it the poor performances that he had in a couple of games late last year, the perception that he might not be as pro ready as others or something else?

I've seen different opinions, but there doesn't really seem to be a consensus.

He has a funny release in his throwing motion.  Day called a one read system where he didnt need to get cute with the ball.  He holds the ball too long, and tucks it and runs way too quickly which makes people think he doesnt go through his progressions

This is what I have gathered from podcasts and scouting reports.  I am not football savvy enough to know one way or another

Yep.  There's definitely a dance of Need v. BPA being made with every pick.  It's a gray area because sometimes, the talent warrants the pick, regardless of what's on the roster.  Draft is gon' be fun this year.  I'm excited.

Lol yes most definitely so

Prospect?

No.

Would he have gone in the top 10?  (Which is what you have to ask yourself)

Yes.

I guess I will just agree to disagree.

I wasn't seeing any worthwhile hype around him being a top tier pick until the 49ers pushed up. There was legit talk of him still falling to round 2.

I believe he will be a hilarious reach that will be propped up by the rest of the 9ers team carrying the load, that if the 9ers didn't trade up to (assumingly) draft him..would have at best gone to another QB desperate team reaching and fizzle out there (like I expect most 1st round QBs to eventually due, historically speaking).

I guess I am just not impressed by him.

Disagree, but you already know that.

I said previously that I had questions about every quarterback in this draft class not named Lawrence, but truth be told I actually have questions about Lawrence too.

He's talked about like a quarterbacking god, yet every time I've sat down to watch a game he's played in, I just haven't seen it.

I'd never say he isn't good. He just doesn't seem to fit the description I hear. Granted, it's possible that no one could.

Maybe I'm just not seeing his best games. I don't know.

So I try not to parrot this poo, which is why I don't want to put it out on twitter. I have heard character concerns and processing time. When I put on the tape I think the processing time is just fine, balls can be a little late, but every QB has poo they need to work on. I don't have a real idea on what the character concerns are, I know it stems from Georgia and his teammates.

Does that really matter if the other guy you are deciding on goes 2 picks later?  Thats not really BPA strategy.  Thats not a reach.  Picking Daniel jones at this spot was a reach

Yeah, I think Lance or Devonta being available could prompt a trade back.  I can see teams jumping up for one.  People are commonly thinking it's to get Lance or Fields, but there's a significant drop IMO after Chase, Waddle & Smith and a lot of NFCE teams that could use one. NE and Minny as well.
