Interesting quote on Sam Darnold from the Athletic article grading all QB’s in this draft class

I know all this ^^^, I've known it for years, yet it still amazes me Hurney lasted as long as he did and after being fired (again) went on to get hired by the WFT.

On a more positive note:  Marty should give all Huddlers hope that, despite lacking an eye for talent or the ability to negotiate a reasonable contract, we too could someday become an NFL GM.  Hurney is living proof that it's not so much what you know, but rather who you know.

I didn't post that. Weird.

oh man watching  tape on Darnold just make so many mental errors in a clean pocket over & over & over

I just Immm am very skeptical of his success

let me elabaroate some..the game is very fast for him to mentally process

Agree to disagree - he processes the game well.

The mistakes come a) when pressured and b) when trying to play hero ball.

Is constant bitching really any different than constant blind homerism? Just curious.

Yeah, both sets of posters annoy me. I just don't really see a lot of difference in them.

I’m not saying all because that is certainly not the case, but many of the supporters of the Darnold move that I’ve read aren’t calling him the next league MVP. I think it was a mixture of feeling relief that we didn’t trade away our future on a draft prospect and some optimism that he can turn things around.

I have said since day one that he may not pan out. I really think best case scenario is he could end up being a Jake caliber QB. But I’m certainly glad we didn’t have to lose tons of future assets and I would rather give Darnold a try this year and draft a stud LT than draft a Trey Lance who clearly isn’t NFL ready at this point.

That isn’t blind homerism. I’m laying out my position pretty clearly. That’s the discussion part that’s been often missing these days.

I felt the same about the previous owner and regime. At this point I'll just wait and see what happens. If the team keeps making the same sort of mistakes they did under the previous owner, I'll just quit watching. So far the new guys have been meh. I can find other things to do on a Sunday afternoon than watch something that I have no hope in or get joy from watching.

I get it completely. I want to be excited but I am jadded as hell also and just want us to turn the corner in the best way. Plus, this offseason is the worst and the media is also at it's worst pre-draft. 48 hours after the draft there will be some quality discussion in a small window and then another long drought before they hit the field and we see how we did. At least we should have a good and fun D. If they make a cluster of it again, I'm a lot more likely to just be loud and annoying then stop watching. Too much FU in me to give up something that was once fun even if it's the sane thing to do.

Winston has unquestionably accomplished more to date than Darnold - which isn't saying a ton to be honest.  But Winston had a MUCH better team around him his first couple years... and Winston has a higher INT% than Darnold at 3.4% for his career, whereas Darnold is 3.2%.  And really they both had similar TD% numbers their first couple years in the league (Winston - 4.1%, 4.9%; Darnold - 4.1%, 4.3%)...  Of course, Winston has built on that (4.7% for his career), whereas Darnold cratered with Gase last year and that hurt his career numbers (3.7%). How much of that is Darnold vs Gase?  Hard to say. Limited sample of Tannehill is pretty crazy to see Tannehill's decline once Gase took over, and subsequent recovery once he left.  I hope Darnold does the same, but I am at best cautiously optimistic.

Yeah Winston basically had the Super Bowl winning roster minus Gronk/Fourbette/and obviously Brady. Good coach/staff in Arians and Leftwitch.

Looking at his Drafts as the Redskins GM I'm not sure he was the genius behind the throne.

Being in the right position helps. Being overpromoted can be a career killer. I think saying he had control issues is an understatement. His work at the right spot with Seattle proves that he produced in the right spot, they have been living off of that success as a team since 2014 and haven't come close to those results. Also, when has anyone looked good with WTF since Snyder took over?

If something is no longer fun, then I stop watching or doing it. I refuse to let something like football, (insert other thing here), get to me. There is too much we can't control. I can control how I spend my off time though.

Like this last season, when it's like that for me I am also doing something else fun so it kind of rubs off on the football and keeps it alive. I will be dumping the PSLs though. If I do want to ever go live again I can just buy some tickets and not have any commitment or care. I was a Browns fan growing up until they moved so all I know is pain.

IMO, your mindset is the same one the decision makers have and -again, IMO - it's a dangerous one. Trying to be the best bad team you can be right now can prevent making the moves you need to make to be the best team you can be for the next decade.

I'm not big on Lance. But if Fields is there at #8 he should absolutely be the pick IMO. Fields is the type of QB that would go #1 overall most years. This is just an insane QB class and it baffles me how many people seem blind to that and it's exactly why I was so pissed about that late season WFT win.

I get that some folks think this is just another Teddy 2.0 but I don’t know why people feel the need to be complete spoil sports and trash anyone who has a bit of optimism. Why not just go with the wait and see approach? This is the offseason. The only time of the year you can and should be as optimistic as possible.

I was pissed about that as well. I don’t think the mindset is “let’s be the best bad team we can be” though. This is your unwillingness to imagine any scenario where Darnold could succeed. You have already written him off. Fair enough, that’s your opinion, but I’m positive we didn’t just trade for him with the goal being to suck less. They think he can succeed.

Could they be wrong? Sure. This may not work out. But they don’t view him as a bad player in the same way you do. They think he can become the guy drafted a few years ago that had lots of talent.

And as opinions go, I’m not so sure Fields is the guy everyone thinks. I was a HUGE Fields fan 2 years ago. He was arguably better than Lawrence in my mind. But then last season happened and then you hear mixed reviews on him from scouts. I’m not so sure about him anymore personally. My main guy is Sewell. That’s who I want. If Darnold can be coached up then let’s get him a LT. If he can’t then we are likely taking a QB next year (if not 3rd round this year) and he has his blindside protection already in place.

Fields could be great but Sewell is as close to a can’t miss prospect as you get in the 2nd most important position in football. Everyone can bust. Sewell is much less likely to bust than Fields imo. I like Fields and he’s definitely got some tools that can make him a great QB. But it’s the draft process. Same was said about the guy we just traded for. I want to see what he can do here for a year. We’ve invested a 2nd in him. My hope is that worst case scenario we are in this same position next year but with a franchise LT in place. But I do believe Darnold will prove his doubters wrong. Not that I think he’ll ever be elite but I think he can be a solid QB. We’ll see.

I think Darnold was simply our best bad option. We wanted Watson. Obviously that didn't work out in large part due to reasons that couldn't have been predicted. We talked to the Dolphins about going up to #3. Understandably, we weren't willing to pay that price. We made a significant trade offer for a proven QB in Stafford. We obviously took a look at the draft board and anticipated the guy(s) we liked at QB likely wouldn't be available where we were selecting.

At best, Darnold was our fifth option. It is what it is. At least we don't have all that much invested in him all things considered given typical investments at the QB position and we've shown the willingness not to stick with our previous mistakes (see Bridgewater, Teddy).

It's going to be a long year.

If he fails then we got finesse by the Jets.

The Jets...

I would say if he doesn't pan out losing a future 2nd is a pretty low risk high reward gamble either way, and it sounds like you want him to fail anyways.  You can not like a move and still hope for the best.  So many people would rather be proven right at the teams expense than proven wrong it seems.
