Deonte Brown

here is what one sports writer said about the pick

May 2—If the Carolina Panthers needed a reference before selecting Alabama offensive guard Deonte Brown in Saturday's NFL draft, all they had to do was ask their defensive lineman Derrick Brown.

One of the great battles within a game came in the 2019 Iron Bowl when it was Brown vs. Brown in the trenches. Deonte, the former Austin Black Bear, won the battle of the 300-pound-plus big men that day.

In fact, after ESPN announced Brown's selection with the 193rd overall in the sixth round it showed a video of Deonte Brown plow driving Derrick Brown into the Auburn secondary.

"If you look up offensive guard in the dictionary, this is your guy," ESPN's Todd McShay said. "He's a mauler and a grinder. If he latches on to you, it's over."

Deonte Brown (6-foot-4, 344 pounds) became the ninth player off the national championship Alabama Crimson Tide to be taken in this year's draft. Just a few picks after Brown, Carolina took Alabama long snapper Thomas Fletcher.

Taken in the first round by the Las Vegas Raiders was Alex Leatherwood, who played tackle on Brown's left side. Taken in the second round by the Philadelphia Eagles was Landon Dickerson, who played center on Brown's right side.

"I think being picked by the Carolina Panthers is a really good fit for Deonte," Austin football coach Jeremy Perkins said. "I am as happy as I can be for him. I think it's a really good organization, and I really like their head coach Matt Ruhle."

Brown has a lot on his resume for the Panthers to like. He's spent the last five years playing on one of the biggest stages in college football for Nick Saban, who runs his program like an NFL organization.

"I feel like I've been preparing for the NFL since the day I got to Tuscaloosa," Brown said recently.

In 865 snaps at Alabama, Brown never allowed a quarterback sack.

I like Tremble the player and think he is a Rhule kind of player, just not at that spot. I would've preferred Meinerz in that spot.....Let him play guard this year and then slide over to C after Paradis' contract is up. In theory, could've rolled with a future OL of

Christensen-??-Meinerz-Brown-Moton

Don't know if Tremble would have been there with our next selection and I certainly wouldn't undo the ridiculous trade we made with Houston. That 4th next year is tasty.

I hope Tremble can get coached up a bit in the catch/route running game, but he brings everything else you're looking for in a soon-to-be 21-year old raw prospect. Happy he's here bc he does fill a void....just would've preferred a Meinerz.

Long Snapper just one of my rules about the draft. Im using draft picks on football players.

The Carolina coaching staff had the chance to work with Fletcher for the entire Senior Bowl week.  They got a good look at him and decided he would be a good fit in our locker room.  That counts a lot for me, especially for somebody selected with a compensatory pick that was the 222nd overall in the draft.

So I guess just fug Jj Jansen then right? He’s a bad fit in the locker room? This good locker room stuff is so overblown. We had a fantastic locker room and culture with Ron and he was fired. Then team leaders were fired. We had a shot to grab a guy who was a projected day 2 pick with medical concerns that would make a real impact and chose to draft a long snapper instead. That’s awesome he’s a “good guy” tho. Based off a phone call and a few conversations with him at the sr bowl lol. Just like Watson was a “good guy” until it came out he was a serial sexual assaulter

Would you spend a 6th round pick to clear 900k of cap is ultimately what it comes down to 🤷‍♀️

Not really tho. That assumes we couldn’t still cut Jj while drafting his replacement in the 7th or signing a UFA. Most teams don’t draft long snappers and most teams have 0 snapping issues. This idea that if we didn’t draft a LS then we would have constant snapping issues the next 5 years is so strange to me. And again, there were other talent like smith, terry, Washington, etc that were projected to go way higher that we could’ve taken a shot on. If one of those guys hits, then they would actually contribute to the team’s success, unlike a long snapper
