Niners confirm the smokescreen

Would the 9ers admit it anything else?

This is just standard "say you always supported the guy you drafted" talk, regardless of the situation.

When you picked in the top three, it's a pretty safe bet that you actually did.

Gotta give it to 'em, well played.

Honestly not sure what the point was, though. Once they were at #3, they had their pick.

and you, the useless fuging media, ate it up when we all knew better.

This is bullshit and they're just trying to save face. There is absolutely no logical reason for a smokescreen in their scenario. Jaguars were obviously taking Lawrence. Jets head coach just came from the 49ers so he had to have some sort of inkling what they were thinking.

That's my opinion too. An attempt to save face where the attempt itself basically betrays that the rumors were right all along. There was zero reason for them to try to put up a smokescreen after making their deal.

All they really had to say here was either nothing at all (probably the best option) or say they made the deal for Lance but of course they were going to continue to do their due diligence on Mac Jones too. Why wouldn't they? You've already made the deal. Make damn sure you're taking the best QB available.

Let's take a look at the genius behind the concept of a smokescreen here:

1. Trevor---LOCKED IN

2. Wilson---LOCKED IN  Jets were not trading out unless it was for a team willing to pay for Wilson.

3.  OH, we better do some head bobbing and weaving here---maybe a juke step.  That is like trying to bluff with 4 aces.   If they played Jones to fool people, I hope Jones scalds their asses when they play.

So maybe they wanted teams to invest time into bringing in Lance etc. after they supposedly took Jones.  Who? The Falcons?  The Bengals and Dolphins were set at QB---Philly? Detroit?  Denver?

I do not understand the strategy.

Maybe they wanted to see if they could BS the Jets into picking Jones and they had Wilson above Lance on their board. Hard to imagine, BUT the jets are frikkin stupid.

IMO there was no grand strategy.  The trade basically went down during Wilson's pro day and the 49ers were there.  IMO around that time they decided they had at least 3 QB options they would be perfectly happy with.  But if they stayed at 12 they wouldn't have a seat at the table.  They basically said that word for word after the trade.

For future reference the Mac Jones rumors came out WAY too soon after the trade.  They were basically instant.  Which basically means someone ran with a random story or Lynch literally hung up the phone to confirm the trade and then instantly dialed a media person to say "hey, we just made a trade and it was definitely for Mac Jones."  Either way it was BS.

I don't know how the story got out there, but it was definitely out there. Our friend Verge was one of the first to mention it here, with the source being another team's NFL scout.

It quickly became obvious that teams across the league bought into the idea, as did analysts. Mocks done around that time pretty much reflected the line of thought.

It wasn't until the last couple of weeks before the draft that rumors started floating around the pick might be Lance instead. But even then, most still seemed to think it was going to be Jones.

I definitely understand that the rumor grew legs.  But it was always BS, and alot of people knew it from the start and maintained it thru the entire process.  I think the timing of everything pretty much told the story here.  Lynch was on the road when the trade was announced, or so it appeared.  Noone "overheard" some secret conversation or discussion, which is how alot of rumors are painted.  "Sources close to the situation" could be anybody within an earshot of a conversation.  However with this one you either have to believe that Lynch picked up the phone to tell a media buddy that "oh yeah, I just made a move for Mac Jones" or when a media guy called Lynch immediately after the trade Lynch said "oh yeah, that move was definitely for Mac Jones."  And if either one of those scenario's was true...obviously they are blowing smoke up someone's butt because teams don't tend to do that.

In the end it was always BS and lots of people knew it from the start.  There was no benefit to them giving up their real "target" for that spot...so they either put out a BS name or allowed a BS name to float out there.

    • I truly do not understand why we rushed him back last season, we were a bad team with an already productive back in Chuba. Brooks looked like he was 60% back and clearly hadn’t regained full movement in his knee and confidence, no surprise he got reinjured. Shame on this training staff, look no further then Chuba returning too soon this season, I don’t care how bad a player wants to come back a training staff is there to protect them. Brooks is a great person and was an amazing player prior to both injuries, I hope he’s recovering well.
    • Brother thanks for sharing and all. Just for a 21 year army guy you sure over used your brain power on this interaction little too much...  Not that's Im taking a side or nothing, Ive never been a bully fan * in extreme deals bullying in needed..... I've heard from smart people in and around Panthers, Smitty needed Angie for guidance BADLY.  I've honestly thought if Smitty was born 20 years later, he should have taken a MMA path and not only would he have been a champion but a humbled good man with or without Angie helping him. He has never took off the enmoureous chip on his shoulder and it has branched off as a stick in arse over time too. Still everyone can not be or act the same with emotions, we are chemical sacks of water and bones. He reminds me of brain-washed individuals that can not turn off the switch. Plus he is high on thinking he's smarting than he is.......its a dangerous combo, but that's mainly what gave him the edge in life to live out the American dream......soooo I dare say change, but its sad at the same time. All those poor women that get involved with narcissistic disloyal men, one of the few times I agree to take what ever form them in court...
    • Completely agreed.  TBH, we have had so many great players that are in my favorite list, and I hate to narrow it down to one, but Cam is it.  Which is crazy, because you would think it would be more of the guys I grew up watching, but no.  Cam was the single most impactful player to ever out on a football uniform imo.  And like I said in an earlier post, I always felt a kinship with him in a lot of ways…  the way he was treated and judged for the off the field stuff in Florida and having to overcome all of that and fight show at back.  And although I am not a black man, I have always been welcomed by and accepted more by minorities, and thus, I know what it’s like to be judged by appearances rather than the content of your character and who you actually are.  I know what it’s like to be stereotyped and written off or mistreated for your mistakes.  I know what it’s like to be held to a different standard while your peers don’t have to meet that same standard.  So I always related to that.  And the way he came in and just electrified the whole franchise, man…  I still think about it often how much it sucks that because of how talented he was, our staff out so much on him and that ultimately cut his career short.  You’re right, there will never be another Cam…  I think Josh Allen is the closest thing we will see for a long time, but Allen is not the running threat Cam was.  Cam could run you over or around you.  That was THE absolute funnest time to watch our team ever.
