Football has done so much for me and my family that I feel like it's time to give back to the game. There is no greater thrill than being on hand when the light bulb goes off and a young man realizes his true potential. I feel like it's my job to demonstrate enough belief to keep him around until he has that break through. For this, I thank God and all those who made it possible for me to pursue this lifelong dream.

He battled cancer for at least 2 years while with the Panthers and may have just decided that being a full time digital producer was a strain his cancer fight didn't need. I always enjoyed his segments and miss him. I wish him well.

I wouldn’t count on it.

Defense could be too-10.  Easy schedule.

He could be average and we win 10 games.

I think the top 10 stuff defense stuff is a little ridiculous. This is probably one of the least experienced defenses in the NFL and has a lot of obvious "yet to be determined" units(secondary and linebackers namely). We are chocked full of talent and potential on that side of the ball but pretty short on actual accomplishments. If I had to guess, we will be in the middle of the pack defensively with some stellar defensive showings scattered across the course of the season. I think we will be looking at being considered a top 10 unit in the next 2-3 seasons, when we keep improving the overall defense and our young pups start to get really polished.

I don't really see a likely scenario where he is average and we win 10 games without one of the best defenses or offenses in the NFL. It's not impossible but I would consider it fairly unlikely. I'd say it's much more likely he either balls out and we win 10+ games or he is a fuging disaster and we win less than 6 games. Those seem like more likely scenarios to me.

I can't find the chart right now but I want to say we were around 16th in the league last year based on expected points allowed, which basically takes into account your opponent.

Most players make their biggest jump in development from 1st to 2nd year, Brown, Chinn, YGM.

Second to third year is often an improvement also, Burns.

Who all did we lose? gain?

Lost: Obada, Kerr, Douglas, Elder, and Weatherly

Gained:  Perryman, Bouye, Reddick, Jones

Do you really think the players we lost are that much worse than we gained?

Also added a top-10 pick CB.

Easy schedule:  Jets were 32 in scoring last year, Giants 31st, Houston 19th (who knows if Watson will be playing), Philly 26th, NE 27th, Washington 25th.  We are playing some really bad non division offenses.  Also Saints have a new QB and we play them early.  Basically the schedule sets up well for our defense.

We could end up with a top-10 defense based on points allowed.  Not saying it will happen but to call it ridiculous is a bit of an overstatement.

I am not sure Perryman is much of a gain yet because, much like his rep was coming in, he hasn't been able to see the field yet. The potential for the LB's to be better is there, but so is the potential for it to be not much better at all.

Horn I am expecting to be better at the schemes we want to run but he is going to be a rookie CB in the NFL. I expect ups and downs and I am not going to be even the slightest bit mad or upset at him if he has a little bit of a dicey rookie season. That wouldn't be even remotely out of the ordinary. So, I don't want to assume he is going to be a world beater.

Overall, better. Probably not leaps and bounds better but better.

I think we should be in the 11-18 range defensively(Total Defense, Points Scored). Even if maybe our numbers are fairly close to last season, I don't think we will see the issues on third down be nearly as bad and I hope we overall improve our run defense numbers slightly, as well.

It isn't as if I think we have a bad defense, I just think it's extremely young and needs a little experience before we are one of those consistent top 10 defenses.

Problem with traditional points allowed rankings is it doesn't factor in your opponents.  For example, holding Green Bay last year to 17 points is impressive, around 14 points below their average.  Holding Jets to 14 points isn't as impressive, 1 points below than their average.

Here again, I'm going off memory and wish I could find the graph, but I want to say we were 15th or 16th in the league in defense when you factored in your opponents average. Honestly as young as our defense was last year I was actually pleased with how well they did.

If we were 16th last year and you think we can be better than 10th is possible this year, might not be likely but possible, and at the very least not ridiculous.

That's really a separate discussion about that statistic specifically.

Regardless, that is basically my expectation for the year, a slight jump in the overall defense from 2020, but a clear trend upward over time.

    • I mean I just don't understand the argument. Baker and Sam both have been pro bowl QBs post their time here. And you just said yourself that is due to him having a damn good roster around him and they are well coached. You're even saying the bad baker is still there somewhere, but he is in a good organization with good roster and coaching that they are getting the best out of him. Why does Baker and Sam get all that benefit of the doubt but when it comes to Bryce it must be a BY9 problem, not an org or team problem?  Hell I got a guy below you arguing with me that Chark/Hurst/Mingo sucked because Bryce wouldn't throw them open. It's ridiculous how far the stretch goes.
    • Correct.  It’s really hard to get open in the NFL when opposing defenses gameplan and cheat coverage/routes on all your players because they know your QB can’t make certain throws/plays.   magically no one that comes to Carolina can get open or make plays with the ball in their hands…..it’s like there is one singular common dominator to it all.  BY makes playing defense way too easy.   NFL players are too good to allow one side to cheat coverage and not respect all the potential threats of a route  so you can dial up a great play.  But if corners and safeties just cheat coverage and know X and Y happening on route/threats….getting open gets hard when they just play it one way.  Getting open has a lot to do with the different threats a WR can pose on a given play.
    • Kinda depends how you look at it both were 3rd round draft pics.  Nico was nothing before stroud and tank came in with stroud.  If both were on the panthers would young have them doing well and starting or would their stats be low.  I really dont know the answer to that.  None of the panthers wrs have left and did well either but personally i feel neither of nico or tank would do much on the panthers.
