Panthers DE Brian Burns: 'When I get Tom Brady, I'm going crazy'

The third-year pass rusher was featured on Tuesday’s episode of the Behind The Mask Podcast on the Bleav Podcast Network, where hosts Takeo Spikes and Tutan Reyes brought up the prospect of finally sacking the seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback. Burns told the former NFLers he’s ready.

Burns notched a career-high 9.0 sacks in 2020. None of those, however, claimed Brady as its victim in either of the two games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“There’s been so many times I hit him last year, and the ball was gone,” he continued. “It’s just heartbreaking. And there’s one time I did sack him, I got him down, but he fell on the line and it don’t count as a sack.”

I'm so excited for this defense. Brian Burns, Haasan Reddick, and Derrick Brown hunting for the QB; Shaq Thompson and Jermaine Carter Jr patrolling underneath; and this new secondary with Horn, DJax, Abouye, and Chinn locking folks down.

If we can get solid production out of the UT and SS, this squad can be disgustingly good. I'm even more excited for year 3 once they've depth at LB + S.

I know man.  Add to that Fox who was ranked 6th with eight tackles for loss, and Davion Nixon, there's some talent in the rotation which really hurt us last year.  I watched another highlight video and many times they ran straight to our 2nd tier guy.  They're targeting to our rotation.  By building depth, we plug that hole some.

    • All these rankings have more to do with the writers love or hate for a team.  Morgan, IMO, has done a really good job at building this team.  Yeah, there are a couple of whiffs but for the most part he has done quite well drafting and signing free agents.  22 is a bit low but it's a stupid opinion based on how little a writer knows about the Panthers.
    • When I saw that I was thinking the same thing.  If Evero does have a great season and gets hired as a head coach I wouldn't mind see McD as our DC.  If we do poorly as a team, I definitely would want him to be the front runner for HC.
    • But it's not about not upsetting a player under contract, it's about not causing a rift in the locker room. The players love Bryce, whether as a person or a player doesn't matter.  You can't spend a Top 10 pick on a QB and then still start your #1 overall pick in the last year of their contract. That act alone will cause a massive locker room rift/distraction that would be unavoidable.  Some players will question why you "wasted" a Top 10 pick on a QB you're not going to start instead of someone who can help right away.  While others will question why we are keeping Bryce around for the season when it's clear he's not the future guy at that point. It would just make for a bad start to the rookie's career while causing locker room distractions.  Again, I'd bet this has never happened in this league before with any 1st round QB, let alone the #1 overall pick, and there is a reason for it, which is that it would be epically stupid to do. And I used the Vikings as the example as they're the closest I can think of, because again, there isn't a direct comparison as nobody has ever done it because it's that dumb of an idea (no offense lol).
