Its an ingrained franchise problem where almost every year they think they can scrap together some leftover free agents that other teams didnt want and think that will be good enough. They've shown absolutely no evidence that theyre changing that mindset any time soon. 

 

 

You cannot use history as an indicator of future projections for the FO now in place.  It is an all new philosophy with all new people driving it.  You have one draft to judge by, 2 if you think it's all Rhule driving the bus. So no, the mindset is not predetermined.

From what little if seen of this new group and what they were be able to accomplish is just a short time leads me to believe that the mindset you speak of went out the door with the trash.

Trust me when I say that the last thing you want is for another 2015 when we cruise to the deep playoffs and meet a buzzsaw dline that runs through our oline like a hot knife through butter and we lose again. 

And the coaching staff will still be sitting there totally oblivious to the problem at hand.

IIRC it was baffling when Gettleman proceeded to draft a DT, 3 CBs, and a TE who didnt even play in the NFL I don't believe. After witnessing the Oline get totally shredded in Super Bowl 50. That level of ineptitude will keep your franchise buried under the sand for a long, long time until it finally gets recognized and corrected.

And I'm still waiting to see it from the current staff.  (Also doesn't help our new GM comes from the seahawks who have had oline problems for years as well).

Only thing I've learned from this new regime is they like to draft defense as high as  previous regimes did.

That is a perfectly acceptable answer.  Only time will tell but you cannot saddle this group with the sins if the past until they make those same sins themselves.  

By my count they have about 10 years of incompetent team building before they come close.  I like my chances.

I see the Efflein Pile-on continues.

We are still building guys.  Brown and Christensen are our future LG and LT.  Next year Efflein will move to center and we will draft a long-term center in the late first (after we trade back for an extra 3rd).  This new center will be starting by mid-year, and Efflein will be what he was always meant to be - a versatile backup and spot-starter.

By 2023, we should have enough young depth to jettison him with little pain.

Some key things missing from your recollection:

  • That season's OL was Oher-Norwell-Kalil-Turner-Williams/Remmers. Remmers was a sieve, but the OL itself was super solid. Oher was also due to start at LT the following season after a Super Bowl bound 2015, but had a career ending concussion in the preseason.
  • Kawann Short was set to potentially hit free agency, which meant that the team needed a pass rushing DT more than an LT as Oher already fulfilled that role and Williams was already showing that he could start at RT.
  • The defense lost Josh Norman to free agency, Charles Tillman to retirement, and Benwikere had an injury that ended up changing the course of his career. The cupboards were bare at CB.
  • Olsen was Cam's security blanket. Gettleman had success drafting "insurance" for TD & KB in Shaq & Funchess seeing that the team made the SB the year he drafted them. He tried again the following season and horribly failed. Thank goodness for 2017 when he netted probably one of the best drafts in franchise history.
  • As mentioned earlier, this was under Jerry Richardson, David Gettleman, and Ron Rivera. Different head coach, different general manager, and different owner. The franchise itself isn't sentient. It goes the direction that leadership points it in.

      TMac to finish up Feels good after pads came on. Physicality is a little different, playstyle is a little different. Refs let the players play, so he has to earn his stripes to get calls and just has to be better playing through contact. Focusing on staying confident and listening to coaches. Not much has changed for him, still trying to be his authentic self. Was asked about boxing practice he was seen doing. He's done that since he was a kid because his dad was a boxer and taught his siblings. Was the youngest and got beat up the most, but now he's the fourth of sixth children. Boxing helps with his cardio and being reactive with his hands to the ball + DB. Admits to struggling the first couple of days, hats off to the DB corps for making him better every single day but had his best day on Wednesday. Even the best get got. Just have to remain confident in preparation and abilities. Confidence will take you only so far, and that's where his resilience plays a factor. XL is authentic and great to have in the room. Can rely on him to be the same guy every day. They make each other better. Everybody feeds off of each other and when one person wins they all win. Happy to be a part of the receiver room. Was asked about how he was laughing harder than everybody else at XL getting his feet in the water off the back of the boat: "Man he needs to be stopped bro... He can't be serious but he was serious. It's all good." Playing against the increased amount of press he's facing in practice is helping him get more physical. His job is to catch the ball, so if it touches his hand he has to come down with it. Only catches with one hand if he needs to, but that gives the QB a bigger catch radius. Had a pregame routine where he did a 360 one-handed catch, but doesn't do it anymore. Working on being a pro: Getting into the facility early and getting treatment, eating better, etc. Just wants to win re: rookie goals. Anything he can do to help the team win. "I'm looking for to the season man and keep pounding."

      DJ Wonnum up next Felt the defense came out ready to work at all levels and took over practice. New standard around here. Young guys have to know they're coming in to work. Last year was not the standard. Nic and Princely are fun. Different personalities but loves what they bring to the room. Sky is the limit for them. Nic sits next to Wonnum, Princeley sits next to Jones II. Allows them to be better mentors. Feels great and ready to go Incoom's athleticism allows him to bend and get low even to compensate for not being the biggest guy. Can set the edge. EDGE guys are helped when the ILBs can get home because it allows them to be a little more free while still in scheme. DB being back means his dominance is back. Can set the edge from the 3 or wherever he's at to make the runs bounce to the EDGE guys. Winning mentality and standard this year. Championship level from practice to how you live off of the field. Accept greatness and excellence with guys wanting to come to work every day. Not settling for anything less. Been in guys' shoes that are fighting for roster spots so he knows how to address them. Remembers not knowing what's next, especially as a rookie. Have a clear mind and ask the older guys a lot of questions. Has a good relationship already with Pat Jones II due to knowing each other and talking football all of the time. Can make hand gestures and know immediately what to adjust. Taking care of his body and excited to start the season. Getting it acclimated to football again by being able to tackle and bring players to the ground. Didn't know they were playing live tomorrow. Don't tell me it'll be "thud." Browns next week will allow them to hit somebody else and get a feel of what a different team is doing. Also allows the team to see where they're at on offense and defense. Ready to play football. Not worried about the QB matchup for Cleveland, going to play hard regardless of who is back there.
