can anyone name a FA olineman the Panthers have signed that’s played more than one average or above year? it would be zero years if it weren’t for Oher?

you’ll need a poo ton of picks to fix this oline not just one third and one second rounder the next few years after we get raped for a few firsts and a second

and that’s not considering the defense, the defense isn’t deep outside of CB, see how awful they play without Shaq? replacing them won’t be easy either

We don't use the picks on OL is the problem. Especially in the 1st-3rd rounds. That's literally why we continue to suck at OL. The defense is relatively deep in most areas outside LB.

The Rams definitely have better coaching.

You can fix the OL without 1st round draft picks. That's why our lack of investment in that area over the past 20 years is so fuging upsetting. You can get quality starters on the OL in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd round draft picks. At one point I posted an article here in the Huddle about how an analysis of draft picks showed that the highest success rate for any position in the first three rounds was OL.

Now, you can also build through free agency, as well but that can get pretty expensive. Especially since the league is seeing a dearth of quality OL play.

So let’s say Watson is three firsts and a second and the defense isn’t touched, you’ll have four picks in the next 3 years in the first 3 rounds; three 3rds and one 2nd.

So the logic is this franchise says screw any other part of the team we will draft 4 olineman in the next 3 years and it’ll be ready by 2026 for Watson? That’s best case scenario and this team hitting those picks.

I mean this is just funny thinking. Not saying you, just in general.

People want to say TB and Darnold were franchise crippling risks but they really weren’t, this however is the definition of just that.

Trade Derrick Brown, Jaycee Horn, and Brian Burns for Deshaun Watson?

Because that’s how much 3 first rounders are worth.

People keep complaining about the 3 1st round picks and keep bringing up those guys. We have those guys and are 3-4 and on a 4 game losing streak with our latest loss to the 1-5 Giants. We have those 3 guys but it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter who you have if you don’t have an elite QB.

Show me the drafts where we drafted an elite QB and I’ll show you 1. That’s 2011 and that’s it.

You also aren't considering free agency or the ability to move players via trade to regain draft capital. Given the youth of our core, we will likely be making very tough personnel decisions in the next 1-4 years because we just can't simply keep everyone, although the Saints seem to be able to figure that out.

Plus, we always have the ability to sign in free agency, as long as it isn't for more bums like Elflein and Erving. TB and Darnold have actively been harmful because they have actively lost us games. Franchise crippling has been the lack of OL investment over the past 20 years. That was franchise crippling.

Getting a franchise QB is not something I would consider franchise crippling, unless he has some career ending injury. Then we are talking franchise crippling.

Furthermore, this price we are all speculating on is almost certainly not real, unless Tepper gets all hot and bothered and we overpay like we did for Darnold. The Texans reportedly want this done by the trade deadline(Nov. 2). That pretty much cuts their negotiating ability down if they actually mean that. If that is a hard date, we may be able to get him far cheaper than they want for him. Or, that could all be pure BS and they are just trying to stir up a bidding war.

Right so use the money/picks to build around Darnold or draft a QB to compete with him. And still use the money for an OL. Logical route.

Donald inherited two 1000 yard receivers when he came to this team and he can't get the ball to them. He threw for 111 yards last game, how much building does he need? A probowler at every position to succeed.

If we got Watson this oline will look much better than they do now. They didn't look this bad last season with pretty much the same lineup.

I didn't read the whole thread, so what is your plan of action? What do you want the Panthers to do? Draft o-linemen and LBs for the next two seasons and stick with Darnold?

If the Panthers make this trade it is going to be super hard to get this OL filled out.  No way around it.  I mean maybe we can spend big bucks on a LT and C but things would have to fall well for us.  The draft this year would be pretty barren

It isn't super hard to find OL talent in the first three rounds. It just seems to be for this franchise. Take a look at the OL drafted in the 1st through 3rd rounds of the last decade and you are going to see a LOT of All Pro, Pro Bowl and quality starters in that group.

Panthers fans only believe this is difficult because historically we have sucked so royally at it.

Not only is that a poor hill to die on, but when was the last time any of those guy’s singlehandedly won us a game?

Exactly. A franchise QB does that for us.

Right…but we would have no picks in the first 3 rounds.  It is going to be hard to fix WITH our first rounder.

I was watching tonight. 5-0, baby!

I was so pissed off at the goalie moves but this Anderson dude is making a believer out of me.

Would’ve like Stafford. Or the team have the competency to draft a QB. Looks like Jones was overlooked. Could’ve even traded down for him.

Could build like Buffalo did, Chiefs did, 49ers have in the past. Build a legit team and get your guy when the opportunity presents itself. That isn’t trading the future for someone with legal issues and big cap number. There are many paths to the end goal. Watson isn’t the ONLY solution.  This clearly reeks of desperation, and Panthers may be desperate but doesn’t mean keep making dumb moves.
