I like Willis but picking him at #6 would be a disservice to both him and the Panthers.  The expectations would be way too high and fans/media would demand to see him play.  Which is exactly what he SHOULDN'T do his first year.   The later the pick, the less pressure there is on him.   Willis needs time to learn the NFL game, reading defenses, progressions, etc.

The most important thing is to have a plan for him. Trey Lance sat all year, Mahomes sat his first year, both were very high picks. But there was a clear plan for both and their HC stuck to it. That’s the issue for us. I feel better about it with our new coaches but I don’t trust Rhule

I doubt Rhule can afford to simply sit him

Mel kiper and and Mcshay discuss the senior bowl qbs.   They still think Pickett is the leader. 

Howell-compares to Mayfield with a better arm.  Best deep ball in the draft.  Jittery feet

Willis - best athlete, best arm  accuracy problems over middle,  throws crazy ints

Ridder -  nice arm, mobile, has problems missing on throws way too much.

Strong - needs time to throw, least mobile,  mcshay not impressed,

zappe - back up qb.  Small, air raid qb, first read qb, not a powerful arm

 

General kiper and MCshay play nice and dont get too critical but said for sure Pickett is a first rounder and the others could make a case during the SB practices but nobody really stands out in this class

Brugler and Zeirlen chime in.  Neither are high on any of these dudes.  Said Pickett struggled in the rain.  Willis, Howell and Zappe were wildly inconsistent with their throws.  No qb has shined yet.  No clear qb 1. Nobody is stepping up.

ridder up and down, looks slow

Willis looks the best so far, ball flys off his hand. Weird body type, thick and strong, inconsistent, has potential and shown flashes.   Question about the timeline of his development.  probably 2 years, need to simplify things pre snap.

 

In general the qbs just arent accurate.  Strong trying to do too much with his arm.

 

Thursdays practice will be huge according to them

 

Good podcast they do a pretty good deep dive on Willis toward the end.  They like him but damn he has his work cut out for him

Guys with big arms look like gods when it's shorts and t-shirts.  It's easy to be seduced by the 50 yard frozen rope.  But when the NFL players start flying at you, you win games by reading the defenses correctly, going through your progressions and making the right play with accurate throws.   And you only figure out if a player can do that by looking at miles of tape.   

The thing that concerns me about Willis is that he sat out a season (the perfect opportunity to learn) but didn't get that much better when he started playing.   He still seems to be a 1 read guy who most often beats the competition with his great athleticism.  And that's not going to work as often in the NFL where everybody is a great athlete.  

Willis probably needs 1-2 years to get ready.  Will he become a film junkie and constantly work on his craft.  A Russel Wilson ?  A Tom Brady ?   Because that's what it will take.   And also a secure coaching staff and stable franchise to be patient with him.   Who won't throw him to the wolves before he's ready.  Like SF has done with Trey Lance or KC with Mahomes.  The team drafting him has to have institutional discipline to stay the course.  

If all that happens, Willis is likely to become a top NFL QB.  But so many things could go wrong on that journey.   He's a big risk, big reward prospect. 

As such I think Carolina would do a lot better taking the safer, more sure thing LT.  This draft has several of them who are all ready to go from game 1.  And with new OL coach Campen giving his opinion on the selection, I think the likelihood of success with that pick is pretty high.  It's just the smart play.

      I mean I just don't understand the argument. Baker and Sam both have been pro bowl QBs post their time here. And you just said yourself that is due to him having a damn good roster around him and they are well coached. You're even saying the bad baker is still there somewhere, but he is in a good organization with good roster and coaching that they are getting the best out of him. Why does Baker and Sam get all that benefit of the doubt but when it comes to Bryce it must be a BY9 problem, not an org or team problem?  Hell I got a guy below you arguing with me that Chark/Hurst/Mingo sucked because Bryce wouldn't throw them open. It's ridiculous how far the stretch goes.

      Correct.  It’s really hard to get open in the NFL when opposing defenses gameplan and cheat coverage/routes on all your players because they know your QB can’t make certain throws/plays.   magically no one that comes to Carolina can get open or make plays with the ball in their hands…..it’s like there is one singular common dominator to it all.  BY makes playing defense way too easy.   NFL players are too good to allow one side to cheat coverage and not respect all the potential threats of a route  so you can dial up a great play.  But if corners and safeties just cheat coverage and know X and Y happening on route/threats….getting open gets hard when they just play it one way.  Getting open has a lot to do with the different threats a WR can pose on a given play.

      Kinda depends how you look at it both were 3rd round draft pics.  Nico was nothing before stroud and tank came in with stroud.  If both were on the panthers would young have them doing well and starting or would their stats be low.  I really dont know the answer to that.  None of the panthers wrs have left and did well either but personally i feel neither of nico or tank would do much on the panthers.
