Draft day scenario - Could trading Burns be an option?

Trading good young players is rarely a good idea.

Rarely a good idea but we also can't keep and pay everyone. This move requires thinking a bit further down the road, managing cap space, trying to build a contender and I don't really think Rhule is capable of more than deciding what to do when asked "Would you like fries with that?"

This places obsession with trading young talent for unknown draft prospects is weird.

Pass rushers are a premium. I get people want to reset basically everything but we could have cut ties with a number of players in 2011 offseason but we didn’t and they contributed to the 2013 playoff year. It’s ok to keep talent and it’s ok to pay said talent when the time is due.

Burns has that one elite trait of rushing the passer. Having him on Pitt or NE, he could reach15 sacks, but I doubt Bill would want him given his weakness at setting edge and running D.

Id could be talked into a mid-first and another pick or two in the later rounds. Burns has had 3 years to add weight and failed. Seems a better fit for a true 3-4 team, he ok in coverage. Just if you stop his speeding wide move to the QB, hes out of the play. Im not big on handing him one of those near 20 per deals, so it maybe time to get that haul.

All we gotta do is stop paying terrible QBs and OL then we could actually keep all of our good young talent. It's not like we have a ton of those guys.

Are we keeping reddick for some reason in this scenario?

It wasn't really relevant for me for my thought process. Since Reddick is a FA we have no leverage with him other than his current contract offer. Burns however has trade value if we are trying to rebuild. We don't need an edge rusher as a high priority, but if we could draft a young elite graded one and possibly address a couple of other issues with our line. It's a risk obviously, but in 2 years we could lose Burns to FA anyway if we don't tag him.

I know. I'm just trying to be creative and positive in an otherwise depressing offseason. Can't really criticize Rhule for doing nothing if I don't offer at least an objective proposition.

Burns is a quality player that could be elite when it’s all said and done. But he does leave plenty of sacks out on the field and gap discipline against the run is another area of his game that needs improvement.

Having said that,I am in favor of trading him for draft picks to keep from paying him the big salary he will eventually command, if creative deals can be worked out.

    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
