Say we roll with Darnold

He's definitely on the hot seat in huddle world.  Not sure about outside the bubble.

I'm just saying...that took me 10 seconds.  He's on the hotseat, and he had taco bell for lunch.

It was a silly question.  Winning more games results in job security.  "Desperately trying to save their jobs" has a negative supposition that he is on the hot seat, which we do not actually know.  If Tepper gave him an ultimatum, he did tell us about it, and is not consistent with a 7-year contract.

When he was hired, he said it would take 5 years to establish the culture/program, but would lead to long-term success (like Pittsburg, New England, etc.).

If he was given an ultimatum and decided to mortgage the future, he could have sent multiple firsts for Russell Wilson, or sent our first rounder to Atlanta for Matt Ryan.  All are clear upgrades to what we have, but would have been short-term temporary solutions at best.  Point is, he's really not acting that desperate.

He's had plenty of time to offer 3 firsts for Kyler Murray if he's "just trying to save his job".

Just to be clear, I'm not a Rhule fan and believe we can do better.  I'd love a new coach after next year.  But he's not acting desperate.  I'm seeing modest overall roster improvement each year.  Whether it results in more wins is still unknown.  We'll see.

Rhule's first year the Defense couldn't get off the field on 3rd downs. That OffSeason, they went about addressing that. Last year, that D played really well.

Last year, the Offense struggled. So far this OffSeaon they have done a pretty good job of addressing that. FA is still a possiblity, and we still have the draft. Or heck, even a trade is possible.

IMO, Rhule has improved the roster every year. And at this point, he has the best roster of his tenure. With options out there to improve it even more. Let's see what the guy can do.

Hellz Bellz. If MacAdoo, and Campen can generate some Offense. This team could be pretty good. Still a young team learning to win. But hey, why not start this year?

Doesn't matter what the talking heads say.  They are out for clicks.  Only one person can actually make his seat hot.  Tepper.

Get that optimism and even potential realism out of here. It’s supposed to be all doom, gloom, and armchair QB around here!

It's funny to say the offense struggled and then just leave out the part where our front office decided to invest in subpar OL and the worst starting quarterback in the league. If we had actually improved the roster from 2020 it would have shown in our overall record and our standing within the division. On paper we can say the moves that have been made thus far should make this a better roster but if you're a seasoned Panthers fan you know that means bupkis this early.

But that’s really a mix of stuff.

Part of that is also the fact we played a much weaker slate of opposing QBs last season vs the one prior.   Last seasons D was overrated statistically to a degree because of so many weak opposing QBs.

I know most of you, including myself, want a new QB.

What if we decide to take an OT at 6 and don't pull the trigger on Jimmy G or Baker.   We go into the season with Sam Darnold as our starting QB.

Our line is going to be much much better with the players we have now compared to last season and they are under new management from Campen.  We have the weapons to make some noise offensively.

What do we do if Sam has a good year?  What if McAdoo gets out of him what Brady couldn't?

Say we make the playoffs as a wild card team and we are picking in the bottom half of the 2023 draft.

Do you resign Darnold or let him walk and get the compensation pick for him.  Do we resign him for a mid-level QB contract.  Do we target a free agent QB?

If Darnold plays well this forum is going to have a field day on what to do next year.  We'd be out of the top 10 in the draft.  Probably too far down to get a 2023 rookie.

Thoughts?

What if we do what you said in the first bit, but roll with Cam Newton....

Quantify it any way you wish. The fact is, the D was much improved after they addressed it.

If they have the same level of improvement with this Offense as they did with that Defense. We should be an improved team. And isn't that what truly matters?

Quantifying matters though.    I mean if you list the 2020 opposing QBs vs the 2021 opposing QBs?   It’s pretty significant IMO.

Plus, the handful of good QBs and offenses we faced in 2021….did pretty much whatever they wanted against our defense.   Which was talked about a lot on this board last season.

and the 2 best players on the 2021 defense just walked out the door.

You can do that negative crap if you want to. A lot of that going on around here.

The fact is, Rhule's 1st year, we couldn't get off the field on 3rd down. They addressed it during the Offseason. And last year, the D WAS improved. And they did it without Horn.

If you want to go all negative, find someone else. There are plenty of Huddlerz to choose from.

did the D improve if you look at how the 2021 D performed against good offenses (with good QBs)? That’s what matters.

we played a high number of bad teams with bad QBs last season.  And the D feasted on them.   It distorted things.   And it’s why Brady, Dak, Allen and good teams did whatever they wanted to our defense.

We still don’t know how good Horn actually is either.  His 3 full games were against bad QBs.  We should of kept Gilmore over Jackson and paired Horn with Gilmore for a multitude of reasons.  We lost our best CB and pass rusher from 2021.

Darnold will come out and be a great teammate and do everything he can to lead this team.  No doubt IMO.  If there is a better option he will support him.  Can’t find fault with Darnold here.  He will do his job regardless of whether he is the guy or not

He'll do anything if it means making $19M which is probably $18M more than he could make anywhere else.

His agent made the deal…I wouldn’t turn it down either.  In today’s game him not being egotistical is refreshing to me.  I understand he might not be the guy but he works and is a great teammate.

We could probably sit here and admonish every contract against performance but the guy is here and is still working.  I give him credit for that
