If The Season Ended Today

this year has probably sold me on not taking a QB shorter than 6'1. I don't care who or how many QBs have had success in spite of being short....i've had enough of batted down passes from short QBs.

and yes...i know that even Cam had a lot and other taller QBs have had that happen, but the risk is much greater...too great, imo...to choose to go that route.

and does that mean i wouldn't try to get Brees or some other short QB that was a HoFer or shoe in to wear a yellow jacket or whatever? well...those guys aren't an option. for future ones, i'll let someone else gamble on that.

if you don't like that answer...

Fair point, but you also have to credit Sirianni for hiring Steichen.

One of the things I always do a deep dive on with potential head coaches is who their potential assistants might be. It was a big reason why I was high on Nate Hackett. He had connections through himself and his dad to build a staff of super well-established coaches.

Instead, he went and hired a bunch of guys who weren't anywhere near as experienced as he could have, with more than one being completely new to their role 😕

I do give him credit for hiring a coach to help with game management. That probably required him swallowing his pride, and not too many NFL coaches are big on doing that.

Granted it's still early, but that's definitely not the only thing he needs to fix.

I really want Steichen here next year.. but it sounds like we are going to go after a proven HC. Which to my best wouldbe the following:

1. Harbaugh
2. Quinn
3. Payton
4. Raaheem Morris

5. Leslie Frazier

My list is...

1. Steichen

2. Ben Johnson

3. Brian Callahan

I am not a fan of Bryce Young as the pick. Too small. Rather go Levis and risk the Trubisky effect.

Man I want NOTHING to do with Will Levis. I understand the intrigue - prop typical size, plus arm strength, plays in the SEC, "pro stlye" offense.... but every time I watch him play against even a decent opponent he shrinks and he is careless with the football. Honestly. I see all the same red flags we saw with Darnold coming out.

Last weekend against Ole Miss, 2 fumbles in the red zone after snapping the ball too early and negating a TD that would have won them the game.

Against Florida in a big win for the program - he completed 50% of his passes for 200 yards 1 TD and a pick.

Then the kid is already 23 years old and only in his second full season as a starter. His numbers last year dont move the needle for me. If he were a freshman sure and I could understand how a coach could see the potential and think they could mold him into a franchise QB (a la Darnold) but for someone who will be 24 (a year younger than Darnold is now) I dont know how much more potential there is to uncover.

To me, he is way more Mac Jones, Kenny Pickett than Joe Burrow (although arm talent alone he is much closer to Burrow). I would much prefer take Will Anderson to pair with Burns and see what Corral has than go with Levis.

I watched that game as well.. and I saw this:

Kid still came out and drove the team down the field for a potential win, and also threw the would be game winning TD if it wasnt for illegal formation. If you are blaming that on Levis.... thats crazy. The WR didnt set his feet, it was 100% the WR's fault. image.png.472672d85ad8e6759e892996cbc7c4c5.png

The WR on the play is a true freshman, so I chalk this up as  learning moment... but I have no idea why he took his time to get set.

I get your concern with Levis, but I dont see him being a Darnold type by any means.. The first fumble was a missed call for targeting and the second fumble was the RT just getting beat. Levis is projected to go number 1 overall by a lot of pundits because his arm talent and his ability make poo happen in a pro offense with mid level talent.

I don't want a retread.

I especially don't want anybody who's chosen by David Tepper.

I get that many people think they have Tepper pegged and can predict what he will do.... but I expect him to bring in experts to help him find the next head coach. Most of his models are other people telling him whats the best option.

That being said.... STEICHEN

It would require a change of attitude from before.

During the prior coaching search, he specifically stated that he didn't need any consultants or outside experts. Tepper believed that he, Marty Hurney and Steven Drummond could handle it.

That committee netted us Matt Rhule 🙄

I can certainly hope that he'd acknowledge he has no idea what he's doing in this area, but I'm not about to count on it.

As an owner, you are going to be invovled in the HC hiring process, bc that is your direct report... You will hire them based on their fit. That all being said.... Tepper didnt tamper with the hiring of the MLS manager. He went with Marty Hurney's suggestion of Rhule... so why wouldnt he go with someone's (TBD who) suggestion of the next HC?

Tepper has shown no sign of him doing this stuff in a silo or on his own.

Young scares the hell out of me.  Stroud is crazy good.  I watched Levis on Sat and I cannot figure out what the knocks on him are.  Too old?  McCall is putting together an insane level season as well.

We stay in the top 5 then we will have options.  After the meat of this upcoming schedule I think we will know if #1 pick is obtainable.

Stroud looks good. I see elite NFL type throws from him. It’s always tougher to evaluate though when his team is always the best team on the field.

I’d be comfortable taking him for sure, even if he busts. The traits seem like they are there.

When Rhule is canned, or when we get to week 8 (whichever comes first) I think it will be fun to reevaluate Corral’s film, and compare to the top prospects this year.

Next coach will have Corral and another top QB prospect (most likely) that we can look forward to developing.

A new coach, and basically two rookie QB’s will be intriguing to say the least.

Wasn’t hurney emphatic that tepper not leave until rhule said yes?

Corral will not be on this roster with a new staff.
