Only one playoff team in the NFC had/has a 1st round draft choice at QB.

Dumb thread. Also, 5 out of the 8 in the NFC also are not on their original team. All 7 QBs in the AFC were drafted by their team and all first round QBs.

No, it isn't a dumb thread. The post simply shows that in the NFC, our conference, only one of the starting QB's in the playoffs was drafted in the first round. Why does it matter of they're on their original team?  Some people act like if we don't trade up to get Stroud (who may not even come out this year) or Bryce Young then we are destined to spend the rest of the decade in QB purgatory. That isn't necessarily the case. The 49ers gave away a slew of picks to draft guy who has contributed nothing to their playoff runs the last two years. If their 6th round pick keep playing like this Lance may not even get his starting job back next year.

Most of us want an offensive minded coach in 2023. We have enough talent on this team that some pundits feel we may be the most desirable landing spots for a coach this season. I think the right coach could find a player after the 1st round who fits his scheme and develop him into a solid player. If an offensive minded coach drafts the wrong player we'll still be in QB purgatory.

I don't ,nor do most of us cautious Huddlers, have a problem picking a QB in the 1st round. My post said we shouldn't reach for a questionable player just to address the position.

Plus the reining SB campion QB was a former 1 overall

But...but... according to Killer Kat Stafford doesnt' count because he didn't win it with his orignal team 😉

On a serious note, Stafford actually proves that a 1st round pick needs to be in the right situation to thrive. Before the trade to LA he couldn't even win a playoff game in Detroit. As soon as he got to a good team in LA (Good coach, Good o-line, skill players, and solid defense) he wins 3 playoff games in a row and a SB ring.

1. Chiefs - first round QB

2. Bills - first round QB

3. Bengals- first round QB

4. Jags - First round QB

5. Ravens - First round QB (injured)

6. Chargers - First round QB

7. Dolphins - First round QB (injured)

Verdict: majority of playoff teams have a first round QB

Non-first round QBs have more success in the playoffs than 1st round QBs.

When looking at 1st round QBs and success for the team that drafts them, it looks even worse for 1st round QBs in the playoffs.

The worst thing a team could do is draft a 1st round QB without a professional sports pedigree and develop them. Trade for a 27/28 year old 1st round QB who is a proven winner, draft mid to late round QBs, sign undrafted QBs, let the QBs compete and keep starting them as long as they have 1 GWD for every 3 losses. If they get to 4 losses without a GWD or 7 losses without 3 GWD, move on. Trade them if they have perceived value around the league.

This isn't football related, but your post made me think of the LA Lakers. This team hardly ever wins championships with the centers they draft.

Since the 1960's I think they've only drafted one Center who who a focal point on their championship team. The team acquired Wilt Chamberlain in the late 60's and won a title in 1972. They got Kareem from Milwaukee in the 1970s and went on to win 5 titles in the 80's. The traded for Shaq and he teamed with Kobe to win 3 titles. They drafted Andrew Bynum who was pivotal in helping Kobe win his last two titles with the Lakers. The team won their last title in 2020 when they traded for Anthony Davis to help Lebron win his 4th title.

I wish it were that easy to acquire championship caliber QB's thru trades in the NFL. 😁

True, but several of these guys were drafted outside the top 5. Their teams didn't "tank" to get them. Mahomes (#10) and Allen (#7) went to teams that made the playoffs the year before they got there. The Ravens were 9-7 the year before Lamar Jackson got there. Jackson was the 5th QB chosen in his draft class. Mahomes sat behind Alex Smith his first year. Lamar sat for half of his 1st year backing up Joe Flacco. The above 3 weren't drafted by scrubb teams and the FO didn't mortage their future away and weaken the long term plans to get them.

Herbert is a stud, but he still hasn't won a playoff game. I don't see how they lost that game to JAX tonight.

Tua is proving to be injury prone as expected. He has had his moments, but all of us realize that he may not be long for the NFL with his all of his injuries and concussions.

Burrow is the real deal. Nuff said.

Trevor is shaking off the stench of Urban Meyer and seems poised to take off, especally after tonight's improbable win. Still, he looked pretty pedestrian until Doug Pederson was hired to coach him.

In terms of potential they are more talented than the top 7 in the NFC, but potential means nothing in the grand scheme of things. This group needs to win several SB's over the next several years to live up to expectations. So far they are a combined 1-2 in the Super Bowl.

Meanwhile EVERY single AFC QB is a 1st rounder lol.

The AFC has simply been selecting all the QBs in recent years.  Naturally, what happens would be the NFC didn't get those guys.

Trevor, Burrow, *Tua, Herbert, Mahomes, Allen, *Lamar,

NFC is about to be a QB wasteland, best be the team to get ahead of it and find a good one, right?

Since modern free agency Roethlisberger and E.Manning are the only championship QBs that have been unavailable to the Panthers. They could of had any of the other QBs.

Of 34 championship QBs in NFL history only 11 have not been traded or let go from the team that held their rights as a rookie. I believe Rodgers and Mahomes will be taken off of this list before their career is over. The trades and signings are out there and available most of the time. It's up to the Panthers to know how to find a QB and pay the price.

That sir is an interesting piece of information. Any chance you could list those guys for an enquiring mind?

Starr, Griese, Staubach, Bradshaw, Simms, Aikman, Elway, Roethlisberger, and E.Manning.

Rodgers and Mahomes too, but I don't see them finishing their career with the team they started with if they only manage 1 SB win.

    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
    • He wasn't a JAG, he's been a starter every year of his career. Didn't turn into the superstar it seemed like he might his rookie year, but I think part of that has been being misused. Guy was/is a baller.
