Canes being linked to JG Pageau and Ivan Barbashev.

Not exactly sure where Pageau fits because in reality he’s another 3C but Barbashev would be nice.

If the Canes could land Barbashev and and Meier I’d be ecstatic.

You could end up with…

Svechnikov - Aho - Jarvis

Teravainen - Pageau - Necas

Barbashev - Staal - Fast

Martinook - Kotkaniemi - Noesen

Stepan - Stastny

OR

Svechnikov - Aho - Meier

Teravainen - Kotkaniemi - Necas

Barbashev - Staal - Fast

Martinook - Stastny - Jarvis

Noesen - Stepan

With both Kase and Pacioretty on IR, the Canes can add two pieces without shipping anyone out, a third piece would require someone to be moved. I suspect if a third piece is added then it would be a depth defenseman and Coghlan would either be traded or waived with the intent of assigning him to Chicago.

Don't sleep on this possibility:  Nino back to the Canes!!

Oh, and the one thing the Canes have going for them with regards to Meier is we don't have to ask SJ to retain salary so we wouldn't have to give up "as much."  NJ would have to ask SJ to retain some salary or find a third team to help them land Timo.  Either way, NJ would have to pay more than we would.

Barb and Meier would be great. I would feel much more confident adding 2 guys.

Was mentioned during the Stadium game:

Waddell is not a rental guy. He is following Dundon's desire to keep the team competitive and not sacrifice next season for a run this season. Every season will be relevant and competitive. Any prospective FA acquired via trade will have an extension included at some point.

It seemed like the St. Louis Blues would be all-out sellers ahead of the NHL's March 3 trade deadline, but it turns out they're pursuing the biggest name on the market.

"A new team has entered the chat on Timo Meier, and I'm told that it is the St. Louis Blues," Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli reported Tuesday.

"That may be a surprise to some, but it shouldn't be. I'm told that the Blues inquired with the San Jose Sharks earlier this week about Timo Meier after executing the trades for Vladimir Tarasenko and Ryan O'Reilly."

St. Louis shipped O'Reilly to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday, eight days after sending Tarasenko to the New York Rangers. The Blues currently have three 2023 first-round picks after those deals, along with two 2023 third-rounders and a pair of second-rounders in 2024.

This isn't an unprecedented strategy from St. Louis general manager Doug Armstrong. He acquired a first-round pick in February 2018 when he traded Paul Stastny to the Winnipeg Jets, then included that selection in the package he sent to the Buffalo Sabres for O'Reilly that July.

Armstrong also landed a first-rounder by trading Kevin Shattenkirk to the Washington Capitals in February 2017, then sent the pick to the Philadelphia Flyers to acquire forward Brayden Schenn four months later.

Numerous suitors for Meier reportedly emerged in recent weeks, including the Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, Maple Leafs, and Vegas Golden Knights. The Rangers apparently considered him their top target before reeling in Tarasenko.

Meier has 31 goals and 21 assists over 57 games for the Sharks in 2022-23. The 26-year-old Swiss star is on pace for a career-high 43 tallies over an 80-game pace, having missed just one game this season.

St. Louis is projected to have approximately $6.75 million in cap space at the deadline, according to CapFriendly. Meier, a pending restricted free agent, is playing out the final season of a four-year contract carrying a $6-million average annual value.

They would have to sell the farm for him, way more than the other teams listed would.

    • Insightful and reinforces the narrative which in my mind are based on fact. 1. BY has talent and there is legitimate reason to believe he has potential to play at this level and be successful although I’m not sure what successful means just yet. Main factors contributing to the uncertainty are: 2.  The OL and receivers sucked and didn’t help last year.  3.  Footwork and mechanics need to drastically improve alas it greatly highlights his limiting factors which are size and arm strength.   #2 was addressed on paper (hundreds of millions pieces of paper).  Better line and protection. Better receivers.   #3 is being worked on based on Canales talking points and coaching.    We should know what he is capable of and what his ceiling is this season.  I hope for the best but I am prepared for the worst.
    • i had ptsd after a few years. every time he’d throw i’d turn my head and grit my teeth afraid to watch.
