Throw in this...

That makes me think the Panthers are going to take through this weekend to digest what they saw at the combine, whether or not they believe anyone is worth trading up for and basically what to do at the quarterback position.

Once they call Carr, they could either make him an offer or tell him they're going in a different direction.

I can tell you what I got out of the presser...

1) Both Frank Reich and Scott Fitterer like David Carr. Between the two, Reich sounded more eager and effusive but that's kinda to be expected since it's not his job to worry about what he's getting paid.

2) Fitterer might have tipped his hand a little bit on one thing: If They did sign Derek Carr, they're probably not going to use their first round pick on a quarterback. If they draft a player, the vet would likely be a bridge type.

3) Perhaps most important, those decisions haven't been made yet, but they're being discussed. It could end up going either way.

This is one of those situations where I really wish the draft happened prior to FA. How bad would it suck to sign Carr to a massive deal and have Stroud slide into our lap a la Justin Fields?

I expect that to be a big part of the discussion.

Fitterer mentioned that if you really like a quarterback, you need to go get him.

But then also said that if you're going to make that kind of commitment to a quarterback, you absolutely need to have conviction on him, not just general belief.

So like I said, I think those discussions happen over this weekend and next week becomes "sh-t or get off the pot" time in regards to Carr.

The part that make me nervous is the "5 year window" talk. I like Derek Carr. I really do. I wouldn't mind signing him. But I don't want to sign Derek Carr to massive 5 year contract with huge guarantees.

The 5 to 10 years were concerning a rookie qb.

Pretty sure Reich said that about Carr.

For what it's worth, Reich sounded more positive about Carr than Fitterer but that's probably not a shock given their roles.

After going that route 3x in Indy and eventually getting canned for it I just dont understand why Reich would want to do this?   If you sign him for 3+ years it essentially hamstrings your roster to a degree and massively accelerates your coaching timeline.  Flame out in 2/3 years with carr and thats a wrap.  However your leash is way longer with a rookie and you can put more and better players around them on the roster.

Go get a guy and develop him.  I just dont see the value of a 32 year old qb that is a turnover machine.

When he was asked about Ejiro Evero, Reich said "I hired a man, not a scheme."

It's the same here. He's not looking at a method, he's talking to a player.

My hunch as to the "why again".  At the end of the day, you have about 3 years in the league to prove that you are a HC.  Rook, Vet, otherwise...year 3 is a make or break these days.  Hell, lots of teams ain't scared of divorce after 1 or 2.

That said, if he and Fitts have studied these highly rated guys up and down and came away thinking....meh....that's "why again" IMO.

What if you are seeing Baker and Mitch?  Josh Rosen and Maroita?  You take the rookie and it doesn't pan out, I'm guessing your goose is cooked after year 3 either way.

Again, not rooting for Carr, just explaining how I see it.

And I'd call those statements accurate...

I think he has learned from Carson Wentz.

He probably wants to develop his own QB this time around, not fix a 32 year old QB.

He's not a turnover machine.

Also there's no way Reich is playing politics, worrying about the leash Tepper is going to give him - he's here to win, end of.

    • Lawn boy he is trash! Dude wants to run the ball with the 25th ranked run offense. We can go back to Bryce talk now. Close!
    • I thought Matt Rhules felt like a traveling preacher/sewing machine salesman. Then I thought Reich had the emotions of the captain of a baby seal clubbing team. I kind of like Canales and think he may be adaptable in today's NFL. I know we need to to see it but does he not give you guys hope too, or will he get his moniker too? (My bad, tired of looking at the same thread titles)
