What the McGinn Article Says

Unfortunately, a thread got locked and labeled as a false report recently based on a jumpy huddle member posting a tweet from a guy on twitter which referenced an interview from April 14. The April 14 podcast clip was used to discredit an article by Bob McGinn, who has been writing an NFL draft series for 39 years both online and in print for respected news organizations. McGinn’s article was posted today, April 21.

The podcast clip from April 14 was of the co-founder of the S2 test saying that the leaked scores for the test at that time were fake. How that gets applied to scores NFL executives talk about in McGinn’s article an entire week later, your guess is as good as mine. McGinn has been around a long time and has a lot more credibility than Landon on Twitter and panthergoat guy.

The McGinn article in question actually consisted mostly of quotes from current NFL executives, from the NFC and the AFC. Here’s some snippets:

”Multiple sources said Young’s total score was 98% whereas Stroud’s total score was 18%”

”When another executive was informed that Stroud scored extremely low, he said that it confirmed what he had seen on tape.”

”…executive said. “If you get a high score as a quarterback it’s not saying you’re going to be a great player. But if you get a low score, it’s 100% - none of the quarterbacks that got a low score became good players.

”The benchmark is 80. Eighty and above is good. Stroud was 18. It’s incredibly terrible. He’s going to be off (some team’s) boards. He will not be picked by those teams.”

”Despite the S2 results, a survey of 16 evaluators asking them for their choice as the quarterback with the best chance to bust showed Stroud behind Richardson and Levis. The bust vote count was eight for Richardson, five for Levis, two for Stroud, and one for Young.”

 

So I ask you. Which of these things is more likely?

1. Bob McGinn, journalist for many decades, worked for Green Bay Press Gazette, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, The Athletic, etc. is lying through his teeth about everything and made it all up.

2. Said guy above did in fact talk to the NFL execs, 16 evaluators, etc. and they all got their stories together about what the test scores were and lied to him.

3. Landon on Twitter and panthersgoat are full of poo.

McGinn is a reliable source.

The Twitter comment is valid though. Used to be some sources could basically be summarized as "guy with a website". Anymore it's "guy with a Twitter".

Which of the 3 things are you asserting as true. Either McGinn is full of poo, all the scouts and executives got their stories straight to deceive him, or Landon used a really dumb argument based on a weeks old interview and you ran with it because you couldn’t help yourself. Say which one please.

I throw in a 4th option. Somebody made it all up and put Bob McGinn’s name on it.

      He makes a good point about Wallace.  In fairness to Wallace it is hard to play your position as freely as you need to when your defensive line is getting pushed around like ragdolls.  One of the greatest attributes a defensive line has is sucking up blocks, freeing up your linebackers.  Our defensive line couldn't suck up a lollipop more or less blocks.  I think Evans, Sanders and Tremble are going to be a really nice TE group.  I can see all three getting time on the field.  If Sanders can improve as a blocker teams won't be so inclined to believe it is a pass play whenever Sanders is on the field.  Ryan Fitzgerald, I think was an awesome pick-up. Hopefully he can fill our kicker void. Luke Kandra many turn out to be our next Norwell.  Everything I have heard about him says he's a beast.  He needs some refinement, but the good news is he's got Hunt and Lewis (arguably the best guard tandem in the league) to learn from.

      Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
