thats a unique preseason look, you are not going to see that a lot in preseason football.

When referring to the Jets defensive scheme

a thousand times this. and we'll likely do something similar for a bounce back this week. it's all meaningless, but there's nuance beyond the struggle

Crazy how 3 years of a consistent system helps which the Jets now have.

Matt Rhule and consistency were never a thing.

Yeah, the Jets Dline is a problem! They're gonna be hard to move the ball against getting consistent pressure without giving up a man in coverage. Remember when the Panthers had that? That unit kept the team in games when the offense had a hard time getting things going.

the problem is that this isn't something you should have to deal with in your first preseason game.

every team has an agenda for each preseason game that may or may not include scheming. i really think the only reason the jets went hard was for team morale. we were just trying to get our guys out there and used to seeing a little action.

i'm not going to give the jets props for anything that they did on saturday because they were going after a team that wasn't in it to win it. panthers were in it for the reps.

Yep. Coaches should agree on how they're playing the game prior to the start. I know they do that to some degree during practice.

Then again. Fans are paying to attend these GAMES. Perhaps preseason SHOULD be treated like games from a preparation stand point. A game with 2nd and 3rd stringers. Hard to prepare that way, but vanilla schemes and play calls are not what fans pay to see. Just a thought.

Fans are paying for them, but they aren't for the fans. These aren't GAMES. They are preseason games. There's a big difference. What the fans want should not factor into what the teams decide to do. Fans being in attendance should be irrelevant to the goals of preseason games. Fans going should know that what they are getting isn't a real game, more just a glorified practice. If they expect more, that shouldn't be a concern of the team.

Ehhh... agree, not a team concern, but an NFL concern. If you're going to charge admission, albeit cheaper, then you should deliver what you advertise. Don't call it games and make it a big deal. Just call it a practice scrimmage and charge for concessions. I don't know. Just a thought.

And I'll say again, I don't want preseason games to be treated like real games.

If it doesn't count, don't act like it does. Risk of injury is too great for a meaningless game.

Treating it like a real game is honestly just stupid.

If you're not giving 100% on a football field, then you're already increasing your chances of injury. 100% effort should be a given. The only thing to debate is preparation and playcalling.

Despite the O line getting constantly stunted and beat, Bryce had great footwork and threw with anticipation. When is the last time we had a QB that had both of those? I don't ever remember. If we can get the O line problems ironed out (I am sure we will), our offense can getting rolling!

I dont see where he said players shouldn't give 100% effort

The reasoning for vanilla playcalling is to see what you have in your players.  Scheming will lead to wondering if it's the players skill or the scheme

Yep. I can see that. I think I just interpreted it as such.

Agree with keeping plays simple for the reason you suggested. It's just that you're not giving fans the real show. Just call it a practice scrimmage and charge for concessions. Don't charge fans to see a watered-down version of an NFL football game. Really was just playing devil's advocate cause I could see it both ways. Just a thought.

Compare the bryce video to this one on Fields and you can really see the difference in the 2 QBs. Fields threw 3 screens and none of them were accurate. Moore bailed him out on his as the throw was behind him and almost in the dirt. Fields threw 2 TDs but Bryce had the better QB play.

Steve Smith not a fan of the vanilla offense. Good point, how would adding a couple motions and basic play actions give away any of the playbook? Seems like it would be more beneficial to see how Bryce would handle those things live than be a detriment against future regular season game plans

    • Disclaimer:  In June, I am usually optimistic.  In October, a policeman with a bullhorn is telling me that I have a lot of life ahead of me and to think about my loved ones as I gaze down upon him from my rooftop.   Having said that, I think our offense (down the stretch) was good enough to play KC and Philly tough.  So how many games would this offense have won if they played the entire season like they did in November-January and if they had a better defense?   If you could stretch the last nine games over an entire season and put a solid defense on the other side, I see 5 wins becoming 7 or 8.  Down the stretch, the Panther D surrendered 30 points or more in 5 of the final 7 games and managed to win 2 of those 5.  If they can win 40% of games in which their defense surrenders 30 points or more, then the math indicates, had that been the case all season, the Panthers should have won 6 or 7 games with their defense surrendering 30+ points.   This season, we are much better at WR (TMac, Renfrow, Horn, and I expect XL to be a lot better).  Bryce is confident and now a leader.    The Achilles' heel of the 2024 defense, the DL, seems to be very solid.  We got back Horn and Jackson on the corners, Smith-Wade is improving better than expected, we signed a stud Safety.  Derrick Brown returns.  While the D is not there yet, it is going to be better.   So if we ended the second half of 2024 playing at a level that should have produced 6-7 wins, better WRs and a better defense could result in 9 wins or more.
