What if, and hear me out here, Bryce Young is not actually some cerebral genius QB

Two quick things, Alabama was not stacked his last year. The only thing keeping them from being Alabama mediocre was Bryce. I watched Bryce be amazing several times when they had to have it.

two. Bryce may be mediocre, but it is impossible to tell because we have so many different issues.

While I disagree Bama wasn't a top program that year, you're arguing against yourself with the rest. Young Defenders in this thread are saying Bryce CARRIED Bama (meaning the rest of the team wasn't elite) and that he needs help here. LOL. No. We're all trying to tell the Young Defenders that Bryce needs to carry THIS team in the tiniest way to show us something. Anything. He's yet to do it.

Richardson literally called and begged luck to declare, then told cam not to get tattoos.

He still had to OK the decision to draft Cam and ignore the fact that Auburn had to rename their plays to just numbers in order to dumb it down for Cam, so we're told, and also ignore the fact that he stole a laptop and tossed it out a window when busted.

Just stating all this to show Tepper is trying to be too analytical, like the talking heads, and needs to sometimes just go with who passes the eye tests. Bryce clearly does not pass any eye tests when it comes to an ideal NFL QB, especially in comparison to Stroud.

They got lucky as hell with Stroud knowing they would have taken Young if they had the first pick. Absolutely lucked into something spectacular and then lucked into Tank Dell again as well later. Im jealous as can be of the Texans this year.

Indeed. I was born outside of Houston(couple hours) and still live in TX. Best believe this year has been the hardest test for remaining a Panther fan and not jumping on a local train.

So you don't watch college football do you?

These are all things I saw in watching Bryce and I watch a ton of College Football. App State's QB Joey Aguilar makes faster decisions than Bryce does and he's in his first year out of JuCo.

I'll say it once, I'll say it ten times more, if Bryce Young went to Kentucky and Levis was at Alabama, Young would've been a 4th round pick and Levis would've gone number one or two.

great conversation about bryce  and the season so far.  About 24 minutes in.  They acknowledge the shitty offense, the shitty wr and the line play.  But they also acknowledge his physical limitations are a severe detriment to his game.  Not athletic, not big, cant see the field etc

worthy of its own thread if you wanna start one.  Really good breakdown by Mays and Chase.

It's nothing we haven't heard before but coming from Chase Daniel, I find it interesting on a few notes:

  • Absolutely emphasizes how poorly our receivers get separation -- emphasized that more than the OL
  • Bryce's footwork is always too casual and sloppy which needs to get fixed
  • Bryce is also just very limited but you can't put this all on him.  Not a good team, bottom line.
  • The inside zone vs. spread conflict we've seen going on is on coaching and Fitt.  Not the right personnel - scheme fit. 2nd highest 11 personnel deployment in the league.  We're trying to run a Rams offense but without the presnap motion, bunch formations, no midirects, no typical bells and whistles.  Easy as hell to play defense against.

Bryce played on one of the best college teams out there. Now, he doesn't play for a good team at all. The mark of a TRUE elite QB is being able to at least compete when you have nothing. He's yet to do so. Simple as that. It may click for him eventually, and we may eventually give him more stars to pad his career, but for now he's a failure. Fact.

Young defenders tell us over and over that if he had better talent around him he'd be playing better. To which I constantly reply: NO S**T.

So ask yourself, what is the TRUE evaluation of a QB? If he has stars around him, and fails ... he sucks. If he has stars around him and is great ... is it the talent around him, or is it him? It's almost impossible to truly judge a QB IMHO. But one thing is VERY VERY clear ... if a QB can compete with trash around him ... he's a very good QB.

That ain't Bryce ... currently.

This is well written, and well reasoned, but flawed imo. No one is saying he needs stars around him, we're saying how about just not having trash. How about league average weapons, league average coaching and league average protection. If he can't make magic happen with that, then he's not the guy. But saddling a Quarterback with Trash and then saying if you're the guy then you make something happen with this, is insane imo. Even more insane when that Quarterback is a rookie.

When was the last quarterback to "compete" with nothing? I guess it depends on your definition of compete. People often bring up Cam here, but I don't think you can call Olsen and Stewart, nothing or trash.

I'm asking sincerely, what are some examples of QB's that competed with nothing or trash around them? I can't think of any. There are definitely QB's who have succeeded without stars, but I can't think of any with Trash. And any examples that I think of as I write this only succeeded because they have a dominant defense and/or running game.

We have trash weapons.

Trash offensive scheme

And trash protection.

For a rookie.

Question: Is it the talent around Joe Burrow or is it Joe Burrow? All I know is no one hesitates to call him a top 5 QB in this league despite the fact that we've never seen him play any meaningful snaps without a whole bunch of weapons around him, except as a rookie before he got got hurt, and he wasn't exactly setting the world on the fire then.

"The mark of a TRUE elite QB is being able to at least compete when you have nothing."

Mahomes has the GOAT TE and GOAT Offensive play caller. He's never had nothing.

Allen has Diggs. He's never had nothing.

Burrow mentioned above.

I wonder if these guys are truly elite.

I don’t know what to do tell you, the panthers situation is bad but I also expected Bryce to be better in a bad situation

Do we know for sure if he's tasked with doing that?

Dk if someone has already replied to this, Scot.  Haven't read through he thread, but remember the preseason hype job from our PR dept where Bozeman said Bryce was given full autonomy to conduct meetings with the OL educating them on his vast knowledge of OL protections?  I'm pretty sure he was tasked with it, but I'm also pretty sure he isn't doing it anymore.

This blurb about Aidan O'Connell caught my eye

https://www.raidersbeat.com/respected-qb-coach-once-said-aidan-oconnell-is-the-most-accurate-quarterback-he-has-ever-coached/

On one hand you can believe that Bryce never had to learn how to adjust protections because he never had to do it at Alabama. But if he's so cerebral and understands the defenses (lol I know just humor me) why would he need experience with that? Moving offensive linemen around should be easy if you know what the protections are and where defenders are blitzing from. Yes playcalling bad, yes bad scheme sure.

But we saw Bryce given a much freer hand earlier in the season with making adjustments and playcalls. He sucked at it. He frequently checked into nothing productive, or got sacked, or got a delay of game/had to use a timeout. They took away his ability to make those calls.

We know that Alabama is powerful in the sports media. We know Saban likes to get his players drafted in the first because it's a good recruitment tool. We know that the media will slobber all over Alabama QBs regardless of their talent (see Mac Jones' rookie year) or onfield behavior (Burns ankle). We've seen all announcers, including college guy Herbstreit, constantly go back to his processing, saying he has to move faster, and being shocked at the difference between Bryce in college and now.

So what if it's all just bullshit? What if Bryce was an okay QB in a stacked offense? What if all this point guard nonsense was just a media narrative that benefited a powerful program/coach? Would certainly explain why Reich is looking like someone is pointing a gun at his family's head behind camera in every shot he's in.

And if this was all just a media narrative to fill air space during broadcasts, it's no surprise Tepper's dumb ass fell for it.

I'm sure the usual cohort of low tier posters are going to post the first tinfoil hat picture they can google, but at this point I'm starting to think it might be true. Bryce looks like he has no goddamn idea what's happening out there, or what the defense is doing, or where his receivers are going. Those two picks to Bates against Atlanta? Did the same poo against the Bears, they were just dropped.

I dunno guys. Think we got less of a Tyrion and more of a Dopey.

Yeah, it's pretty clear he was largely a product of being the conductor of a blue chip factory who just happened to have far better and superior talent than 99.9% of their opponents.  Aside from protection adjustments, we have seen him make mistakes that guys advertised for being such cerebral savants would just not make, rookie or not.  There are other rookie QBs who are playing and/or have played that have not made some of the boneheaded decisions he has made, and likely 9 times out of 10 wouldn't.  He is very average in every facet of playing QB, if not below average.

I'll say this unequivocally; I do not believe that you can call Bryce Young a bust right now and I don't think we should treat him as such. It's way too soon to know what he is regardless.

With that said...

I do think it's going to be necessary next year to sign a backup who can not only mentor him but also compete with him if his issues continue.

Mind you, some of those issues may not be all his fault. The David Carr treatment that he's receiving this season could certainly have an effect.

Either way though, I think that's something you have to factor into the coming offseason's personnel strategy.

    • Sure, but if that happens, the draft pick will look even worse for the Falcons, as instead of getting them a player that could win now, they took someone who ran off their prize FA QB after 3 years and now looks like they may be a bust. Penix was one of the more polished QB's in the draft and would have probably been a rookie starter if taken by someone with an uncertain starting QB, if he's not ready to step in and play well in year 3, then it's probably not going to work out.
